Excellent comparison, very honest and without taking sides. Though to be fair, shooting a person in an empty parking lot is about as simple of an AF case that a camera would ever encounter. I personally shoot motorsports (motorcycle racing to be specific), and that REALLY puts a workout on the AF system. Because unlike people, bikes all look completely different from one another. I owned the R6, R6ii and most recently the R3 (all with native RF lenses), and with each upgrade I saw a marked improvement in subject acquisition speed and tracking consistency (not loosing the focus as subject gets very close). I ordered the R5ii this morning and it should be getting delivered in less than 12 hours. If I see as big of an improvement as going from the R6 to R6ii, I will be ecstatic. I really don't care for the high megapixels, so I might eventually go with R1 come November if that has an even more improved AF system. Like I said, AF performance is everything in racing photography as everything happens so dang fast!
hi David thank you for your tests ! I'm looking forward to getting my r5 mkii...should arrive next Tuesday :) I hope that the improved AF combined with facial recognition will help substantially my not so fast focusing primes in sports shooting situations. ( in family pictures as well ) with the 85 1.2 for instance, if the AF starts to hunt, it's focuzilla guaranted... as I shoot sports indoors, I had lots of banding with my r6 mkii...so I had to stick with the EFC shutter...and 12 fps. it seems that the r5 mkii now offers anti flicker with the ES . 30 fps endlich !
Thank you! Finally, the autofocus comparison everyone has been waiting for! One suggestion - can you compare the tracking capabilities of unrecognized objects? For example, tracking the "ESC" key on the keyboard. Or some part of another non-human or non-animal (in general, not the one the camera is programmed to recognize) object?
Great video. The take away is R5 II can detect better when the subject is farther away. Yes, please test the Action Priority mode which can be a game changer.
@@Tom_Demuth 75mm? Is he using 70-200mm for both lenses? I think he is using tamron for nikon which i don't recall tamron has a 70-200mm 2.8 z mount. In addition, if he is using a third party tamron lens against canon rf native lenses, it may be unfair comparison because native lense is normally better.
@@crhuynh8sorry my fault, at 70mm Sure, the objektive can do difference. For sure. Possibly also the prime lenses can force differences... But what I mean, I find it great that he has record the scene in one move. But finally, I find it impressive that ALL the cams do such a great job!
@@Tom_Demuth yes i agree. Do appreciate his side by side comparison and hard work, which it is how it got me watching as well. But in a comparison, just curious how fair it compares each other because the result can mislead if one is being better than the other one ... if you know what i mean 😅
This test shows it well. Nikon's AF is good, but the darn preview makes it look weak. There have been so many times I would think my shot would not be in focus because the box lags but the shots are perfect. But I feel you should have compared the R5II to the Z8 not the Z6III as the Z8 has a fully stacked sensor and the AF is a tad faster. I loved this video though, shows how the big 3 AF is pretty close, a win for us consumers.
The thing is that from my experience the Z6 III Autofocus is better then the Z8's. I had some pretty heavy issues with the Z8 that I didn't had with the Z6 III. Otherwise from detection they should be same. Z6 III Sensor is already pretty damn fast. :) Thanks for the kind word about the Video.
Interesting review !!! But autofocus depends of lenses, not only of camera body)) and one more note, if focus frame keeps eye or head on screen, it doesn't mean that the focus is actually where)))
Yes thats what I said. 🤷🏽♂️ I especially said I just can test recognition of subjects nothing else is possible to compare with that much variables like different lenses on each camera.
My buddy and I both own the R6 II. He recently got the z6III but returned it because the autofocus was 2 steps back from the R6 II. He said it was "good" but he had to work harder to get shots in focus and just liked the reliability of the R6 II more. And for video, the z6III video files can get really noisy.
You can see a direct Nikon Z6 III and R6 II Comparison in my German Video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YiM8mkac6OY.htmlsi=8HF_gWz4LYo-HNLS&t=1267 What you say is not true, the Z6 III tracks quite a bit better and I never had any out of focus image with it in the 2,5 Months that I have it. Video in N-Log is Noisy as fuck yes, but you don't need to shoot in N-Log all the Time.
Nice performance from Canon. As for comparison with different brand, I dont think that edge performance is significant in reality. You wouldnt shoot subject in 5% edge of frame anyways or keep camera on tripod without even slightest attempt to follow the subject, so less than 100% coverage is fine. Also comparing it with A1 or Z8 would be more reasonable concidering their market segments and technology. An idea for further testing - how does camera behave with multiple moving subjects? I have seen R5 and R5II compared in-field shooting birds, in that video it looked like R5II was highly successful focusing on static target, but original R5 performed better with multiple subjects and combination of moving and static subjects in the frame. R5II was too fast switching between subjects and sometimes got confused when there were some subjects in background too and started focus hunting. Original R5 held focus properly on originally focused subject.
when did you compare z6iii and r6ii? i saw a comparison by an asian channel and the r6ii had more accurate photos, in a 20vs20 photo comparison. the r6ii AF covers the whole sensor, the nikon doesnt
@@davision-en doubtful since the Z8 has far more autofocus points and a faster sensor than the Z6III. It is also a direct competitor to the R5 II where the Z6III is almost half the price. It better be worse. 😂
@@EricDesmarais-c5iJared Polin has used both, and he says the R5mk2 AF is very much better. I fail to see why Nikon and Sony fanbois see the need to talk up their cameras in the comments for a Canon vs Canon comparison video. Insecurity?
@@nordic5490 it was a canon vs Sony and Nikon video or did you not watch it? I was simply saying he is using a lower end Nikon camera to compare to Canons. We will never know how the z8 would have handled in this comparison. Which was a super simple and easy autofocus test. I like to look at all of the brands and see what they have going on. Nikon has always lacked in Autofocus behind the other two (Sony and Canon) but the ergonomics and picture quality make up for the slight difference in autofocus. (Z9, Z8, Z6III AND ZF) the older models are hot garbage with autofocus that is.
Do you think the continous AF in photo mode is differ from video mode? I have an R6ii, in photo mode, the focus locks on to the eyes so well, but in video mode it keeps losing track of the eye from time to time.
@@davision-en It’s not, when the Canon executives were asked about the unimpressive specs of the R1 they assured everyone that every R1 owner will know why the camera is more expensive when they get it and be really happy with it. Also, one of the reviews of the non production model talked about the R1’s autofocus system being superior to the R5ii as well as the normal profile 4K video which sounds just like the R5 compared to the R3. The standard video is sharper and the low light capabilities will beat the R5ii again. Canon would be crazy to release this camera damn near Christmas if it turned out to be less impressive than the R5ii
@@janvirtanen9110 Yes but that’s definitely not all, it will be a better performer in everything except for the upped specs with megapixels and 8k 60fps but just like the R5 versus the R3, the R1’s standard video profile will be sharper and better than the R5ii, there was already a review video that confirmed this
Why did it focus on the background when you were out the frame? This is quite annoying when shooting BIF. This can be easily solved by software. Simply don't allow fast focus shifting beyond a certain distance.
@davision-en just keep to the distance before the loss of the subject. In the field, the subject will return back to the frame soon. And it's meaningless and wasting of time to focus on the background that is far away unless the AF system doesn't know it's the background.
@@davision-en It does. I use Tamron 35-150 F2-2.8 and AF speed is a bit slower than native. Final result is what matters. Either way at 8:26 Z6III recognizes faster
Curious... What lens did you use for A7R5 since you use f4.0? What RF lens did you compare to? Hope you do know that different type of lens can make a big difference.
I didn’t test AF accuracy, I tested recognition like I said. The Lens doesn’t make a difference for the recognition. It’s RF 24-70/2.8 on R5 II 15-35/2.8 and 79-200/2.8 on the other Canons 20-70/F4 on SONY 28-75/2.8 G2 on Nikon
@@davision-en is sony one also third party lens because it seems like the lens you used for nikon is a third party tamron lens, which native lens is normally better Esp with Sony e mount. In addition, f2.8 is normally faster than f4 because i see a big difference between f1.4 prime and f4 zoom Esp in lower light condition
@@davision-enanyway, i want to say thank you for your hard work and side by side comparison... Since it is a comparison, just curious how fair it compares to each other because the result may mislead of thinking one being better than the other one if you know what i mean 😅... Canon's autofocus in the past has quit working in low light where Sony autofocus continued to work. How does the R5 MkII's autofocus compare in low light?
@@destinybond cameras older than the R6II, like C200, C70, 70D, R, R5C compared to Sony a7SIII, FX3, FX6. I have not used the R6II. Have you tried shooting video in deep shade under trees or after sunset as it was getting dark and been able to keep a head in focus?
In my Experience Canons AF does way better in the Dark then SONYs. But the Cinema Cameras you Mention have a pretty bad AF over all compared to the Hybrid Bodys.
I didn’t test any hitrate or such thing since thats also depending on the Lenses. And since every lens on the cameras is different it couldn’t be nailed down to the cameras performance.
Great tests. To my eye, canon's video autofocus is too slow for fast action, like at 5:36. My canon R5 took 10 seconds to focus in video mode in low light. Can you test the r5 mk 2 in low light? Thanks!
I haven’t tested the Video Autofocus here anywhere. You can setup your Video AF how you like it, me for example set it extra slow for cinematic AF Movements
@@davision-en i have my canon r5 set to the fastest AF for video, but it still takes 10 seconds to focus in low light! thinking about upgrading to the r5 ii if its significantly faster.
Canon has jumped ahead of the game big time. I am happy to see Nikon fighting as this is my second most respected brand for photo / video. I have not watched the video till the end, but I don’t think you mention face recognition, which works well with Canon (and not at all with Sony - - on a9III). Canon is way ahead of the game with mirrorless now on autofocus. Very impressive!
The very single reason there are mirrorless cameras with great autofocus is Sony. They were the most innovative in the last 10 years, so you should give them your credit. Otherwise you would have been still shooting with DSLRs with constant focus issues.
@@davision-en any issues using sigma lenses with the adapter? Any pulsing or lost focus? I'll probably just go for the RF 35mm f1.4 even though it's way overpriced but I'm also interested in something like a Sigma EF 24mm f1.4. Or hopefully Canon releases an RF 24mm f1.4 soon.
Thank you very much.... Yes, the new camera is the best, it is clearly visible.... I have subscribed and am waiting for other videos... I am especially interested in Macro and 100mm Macro 2.8 with converter 1/4 ......
I'm pretty sure thats what they do over time do improve it. But otherwise, I haven't seen a Camera doing "much" besser. There are certain hick ups here and there with every brands Animal AF.
You mean with each lens. Since the accuracy can’t be determined by the camera alone and since this cameras can’t be used with the same lens it couldn’t be tested in that way unfortunately.
Also if theres some random people walking in frame would be interesting to see how well each camera focuses on intented subject. Like in street situation.
@@davision-en well atleast there needs to be method of seeing how many frames are actually in critical focus. Otherwise cant really tell how good the focus is. When using camera for still photography.
the question about hitrate doesn't make any sense, because a lot depends on the lens and the settings selected for the appropriate scenes. In the case of mirrorless cameras, you usually have +85% of hit shots. It won't help you if you have 5% more or less if you shoot a series. Nobody needs such information...
@@davision-enI have both cameras, R5 and Z8. I would not say any camera is better or worse. As a RU-vidr, you should compare Apple to Apple and let the viewers decide which camera is better or worse.
@@highdynamicphotographyfilm2235 I tell you that from my experience the Z8 is far worse then the R5 II since I had pretty strange Backfocus Issues with the Z8 when using lenses with a thin DOF like 135/1.8 or 85/1.2 I got eye AF shown but backfocus by 30-50cm in 50% of pictures in one Shoot I did with this combinations. I never experienced anything like this before with any other brand, when canon Shows me Eye AF the AF is on the Eye. When Nikon does in the Z8 it wasn't. I don't let viewers decide, I tell them my Experiences. And I do this since a decade and make a living of it, there is no need to tell me what do to as a youtuber.
@@xdemiurge when you talk about detection and recognition, maybe they are on par. When it come to accuracy not so much like I described it in the other comment above this one here. I never had even a single Out-Of-Focus Picture with the Z6 III until now.
It doesn’t! This is a recognition test and not an accuracy test. This is a native lens and from my experience testing more then 200 mirrorless lenses for different systems there is no difference in the recognition but it could be a difference in accuracy.
What is your problem with using a native tamron lens? The camera performed just as good as the R5 II with it. And like I said AF detection and recognition is not influenced by the native lens you are using. And no I can’t use a Nikon lens next time since I don’t own one and will not buy one since someone means it would make a difference even if the nike was close to perfect.
I also compare a Z6 III to another 24MP Camera. Why I don't use a Z8, since I don't have one. And what is your Problem when the Nikon Z6 III is second close to the brand new canon?
@davision-en the z6iii is nikon's mid-tier 24mp camera while the canon r5 ii and sony a7rv are prosumer range 45mp cameras. you need to compare using same tier cameras = nikon z8 to sony a7rv to canon r5ii
Thats not true at all, I use Canon exactly because I think SONYs Video looks soft and not crisp. The 8K Downsampling from R5, R5 C or R5 II kills every SONY in terms of 4K Quality.
@davision-en It is true! I'm watching a video right now on youTube shot on the cannon R5ii and it looks soft. I have also been on the other side of canon cameras A LOT and The videos just come out soft!
@@Pjiggyyou should always turn the sharpening off in camera, amd then apply sharpening in post as required.. Once sharpening is baked in tomthe origional footage, it is immpossible to remove. Allways a better stratey to only apply sharpening in post. Canon allows you to full disable the in camera sharpening. I suspect that Sony always applies some in camera sharpening that the user cannot turn off.
@@Pjiggy You are watching a video right now that is shot on a canon and it is crispy like I want it. Maybe you should get a little more educated on Video before making such claims.
@davision-en I have a degree in what I do, Do you have a degree in what you do? Or do you just have a RU-vid channel? I know what I'm talking about when it comes to sharpness in video. I'm watching your video and I STILL feel like it's a little soft compared to Sony's videos. I could give a damn whether you like my opinion or not, because I didn't ask you to like my Opinion!
Sorry what? You know why the R5 II still has a Mech. Shutter? So it gets better DR then your Nikon but can also be used without ever using it. So I see the disadvantage with the Nikon not with the Canon.
even if the r5 mark 2 has the best AF, not having quality affordable glass options is a deal breaker. Canon glass is grossly overpriced, big and heavy compared to the competition. At this point to be honest, we're splitting hairs when it comes down to AF and all cameras will get you a ton of keepers.
Sure, but what if nobody else can give me the same feeling I have shooting a Canon? I never felt more home with what I do then with my Canon Cameras. I have Top-Cameras from each Brand but Canon is what I love to use. The others are just there for testing and comparison. It's the same as with woman, not everyone has the same preferences. You can say Megan Fox is way better then Taylor Swift but maybe I will disagree since I have other taste in woman and cameras then you.
Really interesting video 🙏🏻 Coming from the Nikon D850, looking for a mirrorless upgrade the R5 (2,5 years ago) was the only camera delivering what I needed, great overall camera, well balanced for literally 95% of all jobs with an outstanding AF still today! Nikon Z series was horrible in that respect and the Z9 announced but not available yet. I haven't regretted switching to Canon for one second ☝🏻
Thats the lenses fault and the quiet low Autofocus of the lens. Thats also why I didn’t test any hitrate or such thing since thats also depending on the Lenses. And since every lens on the cameras is different it couldn’t be nailed down to the cameras performance.
New sub Sony is the clear winner set Sony to a person and let 50 people in and the Sony stays on that person closer or further Sony is king of all cameras period.in today's world 🌎 there all fantastic 👏 👍 but Sony is fantastic in many ways.
