Breakdowns (aka mosh parts) are a staple of modern metal and metalcore. But what band was the first to do them? Who invented metal breakdowns? There are at least five candidates. We're not reviewing the evolution of breakdowns entirely and what they're now in metalcore and deathcore, but their origins in heavy metal.

I think another key ingredient of modern breakdowns is drums playing half time, pretty simple stuff except for the kick, which follows the rhythm guitar. That’s why I’d associate One and Domination with breakdowns more than Creeping Death, which has a lot of tom stuff going on. They have to be pretty straightforward - even in Meshuggah with their crazy polyrhythms, the kick is the complex part, and the cymbals and snare are straight, so you can get your mosh/headbang on 🤘

Something great that you said, Andriy, was to distinct a breakdown from a slower bridge/passage on songs. While breakdowns are, as the name suggests, a broken down, simpler version of a riff from the song, the slower bridges and passages are called slams. And it's very clear who invented it: Suffocation (listen to Liege of Inveracity, from their first album). It even gave birth to a new genre (Slam Death Metal), with bands like Devourment, Defeated Sanity and Abominable Putridity. Just wanted to clarify, many people get confused over this!

@NonBinaryBisexualAdhdAgender
@NonBinaryBisexualAdhdAgender 3 года назад
@@antoniocenteno1483 I'd argue that the "Keep your distance..." part of Phantom of the Opera is a "breakdown" if we morph the definition so it doesn't have to be moshing, but increased intensity of any physical expression (like dancing, air guitaring, "grooving", or whatever). To me, the melodic interlude in Phantom of the Opera is what comes after that section.

The breakdown as we think about it today came from NYCHC. Which particular band is hard to say. Agnostic Front was more punk. But then those guys went on to form Madball, and that band definatley had breakdowns. By the time domination by Pantera came out, breakdowns like that were common. The 90s was full of bands that wanted to be the next Hatebreed.

When I saw the title, all I could think of was... Sabbath Bloody Sabbath... and then I started watching the vide, listening to you spiraling down to Slayer ++ and I was like... I am ready to write a comment to mention Sabbath Bloody Sabbath if you do not mention it... are you gonna mention it? Looking at the video getting closer and closer to the end, my fingers getting trigger happy and then BOM! 7:28 Thank you! I was so relieved... hahah!

The early breakdown that comes to my mind is won't get fooled again by the who (1971). At around seventh minute there is a great build up and then great vocal scream and breakdown.

The famous drum part in One is clearly inspired by Darkness Descends by Dark Angel. Not taking anything away from One or its impact but credit where its due.

Two "honorable mentions" 1) Phantom Lord. While Dave's clean-slow-bit is just a clean-slow-bit, and not a breakdown, the chugging at the end of it, just before the solos, is Mosh Central (followed by Crazy Central as the solos begin) 2) Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name. Ok, so maybe Maiden aren't really a "mosh" band, but if "intensity of air-guitaring" is the NWOBHM equivalent to "intensity of moshing", there are at least two breakdowns in Hallowed Be Thy Name, where the tempo slows, and the air guitar, and head-bob/nod substantially increase in intensity. Come to think of it, given the description I just gave for pre-mosh/pre-headbang breakdowns, Stairway to Heaven is a great early example. The "transition" bit, where we go from clean rhythm guitar to distorted rhythm guitar - just before the solo which leads into the "and as we wind on down the road". The tempo slows to nearly zero, and the air-guitaring, and slow headbanging, go through the roof!!

Damn, they just keep coming now. An earlier Maiden breakdown: Purgatory. "Please, take me away," yes it's a bridge, post-chorus, whatever you want to call it, but also fits the pre-mosh breakdown description. As do at least two of the sections in Phantom of the Opera. And Killers. But I'm gonna stick with Stairway as the earliest of my examples...

I grew up listening to and going to hardcore punk shows in the 80's and the use of the breakdown was pretty common. In the context of a song composition it successfully contrasted a fast to a slower riff. In a live setting it was used as a breather for moshers. I wouldn't of hung at a Cryptic Slaughter show if it was all jackhammer thrash! Early thrash bands listened to this stuff and tried to at least model it in spirit. They listened to stuff like Minor Threat, Agnostic Front especially the east coast bands that utilized it. BTW my favorite breakdown was in Slayer's "At dawn they sleep!" I might even go so far as to say the blast beat came out of that era. Just listen to Septic Death's, "Thaw!"

As an old school hardcore guy who loves thrash death and prog today... i just love that you mentioned where this all came from. Metalheads often have a hard time seeing that hardcore punk is the reason for thrash... Guess thats why i never paid much attention to special breakdowns, just because they were a usual thing for me 😉👍

Metallica probably deserves much of the credit. They really popularized the idea of time signature changed and riff changes. The ending to Seek And Destroy has a definite breakdown feeling, and that was in '83.

One of your greatest videos Andriy. Every time something popped into my mind (like Sabbath Bloody Sabbath), you mentioned it. Hand of Doom has a killer one, too imho. Anthrax kicked it up a notch with "A.I.R.".
