Well, despite being french, l'm not ready to switch from Metallica to Gojira as my favorite band : most of their songs are not fast, they're speed, almost the same one. In concert, it's not dance-able nor mosh-able (I saw them once, Metallica twice). Not melodic enough, not relatable enough and the voice is not as sing-able. I don't deny their technic / complex composition etc, just saying I don't feel the same emotional engagement when I listen to them as I do with Metallica and as I can't engage with their music by easily singing along nor dancing along, it's just really not in the same level of the game 😜
HI again, frrriend!! Great video, to comprehend Gojira a bit more, indeed! Thanks Andriy! And ...wow you linked to a video I was going to watch, from Ben ! So happy about the coincidence, I think nearly same as you do about Gojira! Fortunately, there are still guys who can light and hold the torch of Metal..
@@orangeunderscore Yeah. They're too niche and slightly too heavy to make it big(er). They will grow a bit with every album, but not a lot. They're about as big as they'll get, maybe grow for another 10-20%.
Every single time I think about the fact I was supposed to see them and Metallica in the same day but had it stripped from me I get depressed Thanks virus
I think that's partly why if you were going to ask this question, they would fit. Metallica had and has long longevity, so a band that is "the new Metallica" would need such longevity.
I wish I could get more in to Death in their hayday, but at the time the harsh vocals were not my cup of tea. Of course now that is more the norm so going back and listening to Death is a real treat. Flesh and the Power is Holds is amazing
@@orangeunderscore I actually heard the last song they put out which I assume is from the albums that’s coming. I really dug the atmosphere on that one so yeah, maybe I’ll work my way backwards from there!
@@gingerjam2192 Well I would not call it "Ballad": it's clearly more prog & heavy than The Chant. I agree on the "amazing" though. One of my fav' track.
I see your reasons man. But in my humble opinion, Metallica’s songs are much more “ear friendly”. Even their heaviest and thrashiest songs. That’s why they have such a huge community. Same case applies to Megadeth. But when I suggest someone to listen Gojira, they always say that they are irritated by the sound or the drums. A bit like St. Anger. Gojira is a kind of band that “you’ll love it if you like that subgenre”. PS: I really like St. Anger.
I see. It’s not just about being liked by the most people. Now metal is becoming new jazz. So the successors should push the boundaries and keep experimenting. And keep it just below mainstream.
Metallica is the most agressive music I listen to, so Gojira is a no for me. Also, they did not do Escape justice when they covered it. Now, I do like the Alter Bridge songs that Myles Kennedy says are inspired by Gojira.
@@AndriyVasylenko Keeping experimenting is admirable, but I don't see how Gojira can become as synonymous with metal as Metallica are while they play the music they play. The main trait of Metallica is diversity of their music - that's how, like you said, everyone knows Metallica. That's because not only they have classic thrash albums, but also Black Album, also to a less extent Load, and Reload. Most people don't even know Metallica is a thrash metal band first and foremost. Also even their thrash albums aren't very aggressive like Slayer's, for example. Gojira has none of that. In my opinion, it will always remain a good, but niche band only for those who like listening to their subgenres.
i dont know any songs from gojira. thats why they arent the next metallica, coz everybody knows master of puppets, enter sandman and nothing else matters ect, coz they are good songs. Gojira doesnt have"hits".
yea Trivium is far better than everybody in the metal scene their songs are easy to listen and I am just not a big fan of Gojira. IMO they just don’t have as much good songs as Trivium
We can see a lot of Sepultura's influence in Gojira as well, mainly from "Chaos A.D.". Probably the reason they made a song about Amazonia and brazilian native american people.
The past year and a half, I’ve been almost exclusively listening to Gojira. I haven’t been that obsessed with a band since I started listening to Metallica when I was 14. Glad the biggest Metallica fan can agree with how awesome they are.
Every 5-years some band is proclaimed "the new Metallica" and it's usually the nail in the coffin of their success because Metallica is still the new Metallica.
I remember Disturbed being the "new" Metallica. Not even close. Gojira is not even close. No band right now is close to being what Metallica was in the 80's when they exploded. Times are different now. No band right now is close to being Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Poison, Motley Crue etc.
Not to mention Metallica came out when thrash speed or whatever you want to call it metal was starting out. That's another reason they are special. Just listened to a few clips of Gojira to get an idea and they don't sound like anything new.
@@crodriguez2360 I agree with you on the Metallica part. But I believe Gojira is a very unique band. Calling them "nothing new" is just not true. They have a lot of unique aspects. Metallica on the other hand was nothing new even at their peak, they basically took influence (to the point some people call it plagiarism) from a ton of less known thrash bands and made their success out of that. Still the most popular metal band ever but definitely not because of being something new or unique.
@@TonyMetal Let me rephrase the nothing new part. Yes Metallica wasn't the only thrash band around at the time but that kinda of music was newer. Music style like Gojira has been around for way longer. Yes they may be unique but from the few songs Ive heard they sound like any band that has that type of singing and music. I don't know what band or style of metal will be new or different in the future. To me one band that stands out as unique is Tool. Wish they had put out an album or 2 before their last album.
@@crodriguez2360 The problem with your assessment is that Gojira was one of the first bands to play their style of Metal. Gojira goes back to the late 90's. They started out a Death Metal/groove metal band, and became something else over time. You should listen to their first 4 albums, because those are the real definition of what Gojira is supposed to be. Specifically The Link, From Mars To Sirius, and The Way Of All Flesh. Terra Incognita is my favorite Gojira album, but that album might not appeal to everyone. The last 3 Gojira albums are awesome, but they aren't as intense as the first 4 Gojira albums.
I got into gojira like 2 or 3 years ago with Mars to Sirius, and they instantly became my second favorite band ever, first being, well, metallica. And I could say gojira ccould very well be reaching my personal number 1.
I also had Metallica as my number one for literally years until I dove into Gojira stuff and I tell you, there's no coming back. Their songs are so unique that it's impossible not to fall in love with this band. Everything is so tight and precise and their melodic riffs and outros are simply amazing. It's a weird feeling I get from their music, it's like I feel connected with nature and more in touch with my spiritual self, and I never was spiritual before in my life. Sometimes I even medidate listening to some of their stuff.
I'm from France and I follow Gojira since "The link". I saw them 5 times and I was always impressed by the live sound. I'm very proud to have a great band in France with a big influence in metal scene. I love this band and "yes" I'm very interested by Gojira videos in the future. Thank you Andriy for your work. See you soon
In my book Slipknot picked up where Metallica and Pantera left off. You could laugh but look how big they are. They have platinum and chart topping albums. Like that's almost unheard of in metal.
Selling records don't count anymore for the bands that debuted during Napster. Sliknot 17 million followers on Facebook and 4.7 million followers on Instagram.
@@ericphoenixg You ain't wrong. But if you take out sales and charts? Slipknot are still extremely influential. So many people got into metal because of them. Just like Pantera and Metallica. 😄
@@Vivi_9 IOWA is still post-2000... and it's still one of the most visceral, dark and brutal albums outside of the death metal scene. All Hope Is Gone is also insanely good. But yeah... Slipknot's popularity pretty much rivals that of Metallica's
I recommend it! I only knew Magma and Low Lands for about a year then added Flying Whales later on. Didn't branch out from that until last year and I'm loving the band. I would suggest going through each song's album - Magma and From Mars To Sirius
TeleWhales 🤟 i'm really excited for Fortitude, the new singles has been awesome 🔥 Oh, and i read somewhere, James said that he really loves From Mars To Sirius :D
Yeah me too... but Into the Storm was a little... underwhelming, i don't know... the chorus was awesome but the rest of the song feel a little weak... However, Amazonia and We're born for one thing are absolute masterpieces...
Actually, the gallop 2.0 part comes from Morbid Angel, listen to the song Summoning Redemption, man. This kind of stuff is pretty common in death metal, Gojira just brought it to the mainstream. I am super surprised that people do not mention MA more often when talking about Gojira.
Gojira is badass shit! First time I saw them, they killed me (still named Godzilla at the time). Soundwise, show-wise, everything was already so tight. The only other bands that makes that effect live for me is Meshuggah.
Absolute technique monsters, crude originality, bold and brave, fast, deep, strong, scary, uplifting, ridiculously unique, sincere, extremely artistic, amazing live performance, amazing studio sound, amazing lyrics. They are just fantastic.
Every generation thinks their music is unique and will never be replicated. And they're right to a certain extent, newer bands are always inspired by older ones, but they aren't going to be exactly the same. But that doesn't make one better than the other. I've listened to Gojira and Metallica and I vastly prefer Gojira, but that's not necessarily because Gojira's better, it's because that's just what resonated with me more.
Gojira's main influence may be Metallica from a contextual point of view but sound wise its Morbid Angel especially their first 3 releases and those THICC riffs
Its great to see Gojira become more popular amongst the metal community. They've set a new bar that will be incredibly hard for most bands, new and old, to top.
I'm happy asf that Gojira is becoming well recognized and more popular. They are starting to headline more festivals than their previous years, and I will tell you that they rock ass live. I saw them in my hometown of FL, and they really kicked ass and proved themselves.
So for the first time in a long time, I am sitting down to write a long comment on an Andriy Vasylenko video. I watched the whole video this time, and I don't see much of the resemblance in the styles and timelines between Metallica and Gojira. So I will make the case for another band. Volbeat. Kill 'Em All = The Strength/The Sound/The Songs. Volbeat was simply riffing all over the place, and many of the songs sounded similar to each other. They were just trying to make music, like Metallica was back in the day. Ride The Lightning = Rock The Rebel/Metal The Devil. This was the album where Volbeat diversified their music and found their signature sound. Master Of Puppets = Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood. Their best album to date, even according to Michael Poulsen himself. Also the album that "put them on the map in the metal world". Shortly after the album was released, Michael's dad, who was a big influence on the band, passed away. So it's a similar loss to Metallica with Cliff Burton. ...And Justice For All = Beyond Hell/Above Heaven. Lots of new elements on Volbeat's music were introduced here, kind of making it more complex. Also, nowadays they tend to avoid playing most of the songs live even though they were big hits, similar to what Metallica did for a long time with ...And Justice For All. Black Album = Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies. Volbeat took on a more mainstream sound when Rob Caggiano joined the band. (By the way, an album review of OG&SL calls it "Volbeat's Black Album".) Load/ReLoad = Seal The Deal & Let's Boogie and Rewind, Replay, Rebound. Two albums that were clearly trying to appeal to the mainstream. The accompanying tours also saw the band ignore most of their material from before OG&SL, and Metallica kind of did that on the Load/ReLoad tours, ignoring most of pre-Black Album stuff. St. Anger = Possible eighth album. Michael said that he is revisiting a lot of the old material but with a new twist; it's probably going to be more thrashy than any of the first few albums. He also says he doesn't want to do another album like Rewind, Replay, Rebound. I think James and/or Metallica had a similar mindset with the transition between Load/ReLoad and St. Anger. You could also draw an analogy from James's rehab which limited his time with the band to the quarantine that pretty much put Volbeat out of action as one member lives on a different continent from the rest. I still think Volbeat deserves to be the next Metallica.
Gojira might never need a guitar solo, but I just wish Per Nilsson from Meshuggah lays down his amazing fusion solos on one of their future records. I really hope for this collaboration.
Agree... for me personally Gojira is the best metal band at this moment. They’re just getting better and better!! And they have the best drummer a band can ask for!
Andriy you're a legend but Lars is not a bad drummer. Everyone knows he's not the most technical or precise drummer out there but what he does for the band suits really well and his drumming in the 80's was pretty revolutionary in the thrash genre and many modern day drummers acknowledge this too
i really like how you described how its impossible for there to be a "new metallica." i wasn't convinced at the beginning because the paths of both bands dont exactly line up, but after realizing the metal landscapes are extremely different 30+ years apart, i agree that gojira seems to be a close modern equivalent.
@@theabsolute23 Definitely not an album to recommend to a person (probably a Metallica fan) who has never heard them before. Later albums are more accesible for everyone
I think that there can't be another Metallica anymore. Nothing against Gojira, they are an amazing band. The music industry isn't the same it was in the 80-90s. For Gojira to be the next Metallica it would have to have similar kind of effect on the music scene and to draw numbers similar to Metallica. For Gojira to do this is nearly impossible. Metal was really big and fast growing in the 80-90s and even that popularity cannot match the popularity, even slightly, of todays rap or pop. It's sad... but true...
@@tizianopertile1040 I'm not asking them to make every song into Hangar 18 or something 😂 just a couple of lead bits here and there like Meshuggah do. I think personally that a sonically higher end aspect could add to their songs sometimes. I get what you mean though about that being their style.
Let's say Metallica is one of those "once in a generation" bands like Beatles and Zeppelin. Quite frankly, I don't think any metal band would ever be as big as Metallica. Gojira is very respected in metal community and currently they are my favorite band, but I don't think they'll ever be as big as Metallica. They are too heavy to be liked by non-metalheads.
Are you kidding? To be an heir to Metallica, they'd have to have great (or even good) vocals, good guitar solos (do Gojira even have guitar solos? I can't remember any in the songs from them I've heard), and memorable riffs and songs. They're more like a B grade imitation of Chaos A.D.-era Sepultura, but with weaker songs.
@@desubokudawanano Are those songs from the new album? Metal bands should have solos on every song, or at least the majority of them - riffs and rhythms drive a song, but solos are the icing on the cake. That's one of the main reasons why St. Anger wasn't well-received by most Metallica fans - if it had solos, it would've been a more popular record.
Great video Andriy. You made me reconsider this band again... I finally gave it a chance to hear the full discography. Fell in love with magma to be honest. And waiting to fully hear fortitude, sounds really great. I'd really love to hear your opinion on Mastodon with a Video like this too!
I'm so excited for this Gojira phase. I got into them a few months ago as thrash and classic metal kind of phased out of my preferred genre - and my favorite RU-vidr is not only here for the ride, but leading it. Oh man I'm hype.
This is so true that overall everyone have heard about Metallica. People may not have heard their song but they atleast know the name and know the band named Metallica exist. here so many school kids love Metallica in my country also.
I remember I used to not really like this band because I was annoyed with how everyone was so obsessed with them but after all these years I've finally started enjoying them and think they do make great songs and are now one of the many bands that inspire the music I want to write in the future.
As a lifelong Maiden fan I take exception to your statement. Maiden IS a very well-known Metal band who has sold over a 100 million albums world-wide. They are also one of the bands, along with Motorhead to influence Metallica in their formative years and any real Metallica fan who delves into their history would find that out. Also, Maiden has massive brand recognition that goes beyond Metal. It's more likely if you go up to a random person they may not have heard Maiden's music but have heard of them due to their mech. Maiden are one of the most iconic and influential bands in Metal history.
I was a little less kind in my own reply but I absolutely agree with you here. If he wants to pigeon hole his perspective down to album sales then yes Metallica have been more successful but he must be insecure if he can't admit that Maiden are the real kings of metal. In terms of tshirt sales alone and whether you consider KISS or AC/DC metal bands then no other band has sold anywhere near as much clothing merch than Maiden.
I've been a Metallica fan for 20+ years but for whatever reasons have never been able to really get into any other metal band despite really liking that style of guitar. But I am now getting into Gojira. I've tried before and it hasn't stuck but something about this new album Fortitude clicked and I've been listening to their whole discography for a couple weeks now.
