Providing the raw material for building homes and able to be converted into clothing and even rope, the numerous species of maguey (also called agave and the “century plant”) were an invaluable source of fiber for those living in the arid, rocky highlands.

It's got nothing to do with the absorption of the alcohol, but how much of it you've drank: If you're eating the worm, it's because it is at the bottom of the bottle and you've drank all the alcohol, so you eat the worm. Why waste good alcohol? Tradition.

I worked in Mexico a few years ago and enjoyed the beer and tequila in some rather seedy places. A group of us visited a "tequila museum" and in my poor Spanish I posed the worm question. After a not again look the guide answered me in perfect English that the worm was added to the export tequila by the Spanish as a hydrometer, if the worms are floating your drink has been watered!

Yep, that's how you pronounce Oaxaca, like an H or J. here's a bonus fact, if the X is in the begining of a word it's pronounced like an S, e.g. Xochimilco should be pronounced Sochimilco.

dang, you're totally right. I also just looked it up and jicama used to be Xicamatl in nahualt. i have to admit i have no idea what rhyme or reason there is for J vs S... but it's making me curious to try and learn some Nahuatl.

Here's a question: Remember those toll-free number ads that used to be all over cable tv, at least in the US? At the end of the ad, they all used the same blue template, with the product still being shown in a small window in the top left, and the phone number in big yellow numbers across the screen. What is the origin of that template?

Hey I got one: we all know that "speak now or forever hold your peace" is the right time for the protagonist to dash in heroically but why is that line in standard wedding vows anyway? Surely if you really wanted to talk your mate out of a bad marriage it would be polite to do it BEFORE the wedding and not put him on the spot and potentially waste all the money of the planners and the guests who showed up. So why is that so standard?
@gnarthdarkanen7464
@gnarthdarkanen7464 7 лет назад
T4ko8Yaki, Ceremonially, it dates back to ages of Royals, and a much more stringent rank and caste system of society. The ideal(s) of "marrying well" had more to do with politics, money (especially family/inheritance), and of course land ownership. Thus, in that era, the line was inserted into the ceremony to give "an appropriate time" for the marriage to be officially protested or obstructed by someone not exactly directly connected to bride or groom. (Presumably, family and friends would have already conveniently made their peace known outside and prior to ceremony as you pointed out)... However, not every reason two people should not marry has anything to do with the two in question, or any part of either's family or friends. Sometimes (and remember, it was a very different world) mitigating factors might conceive of a debt owed by the bride's father to someone who had "legitimate legal" right to withhold the daughter as collateral. This could be used as a political leverage against said debtor until such time as he has "squared the deal"... Of course, there are virtual myriad other reasons to protest a wedding under those guidelines, but hopefully you get my point. Since then, the ceremony has just kept it around, and it still serves as a "proper" timing for someone to air their grievances about said ceremony, and in the case that no one speaks, it "ceremonially" and officially seals the union as "uncontested" in the eyes of the public and especially the attendees... So it's not a terrible idea anyway... Theatrically, it will always serve as that expected (cornball?) segway point for a worthy protagonist to show up and prove his romantic (and 'ahem' thoroughly honorable) intentions at the last moment before he would be required by honor to "forever hold his peace"... such as it goes. :o)

I've just came back from a trip to Oaxaca, and among many other wonderful things, I learned (from a couple different natives, directly working in the production/sale) the worm in the mezcal has a meaning: "to give back the soul to the maguey where the mezcal was extracted, as the worm had to be removed for the distillation process". P.S. Yes, Oaxaca is pronounced like that.

Poltergeist - the worm scene ensured I would never drink that crap. I remember the tequila flavored suckers that had a worm in them, mid 90s. Not sure if the worm was real but it looked gross.

Great job on Oaxaca! Only change is that the a at the end is pronounced more like "ah" than "uh" (basically just like the other two a's). Good vid! Going to check out the subscription service too :)

Hey you got some Tajin! (pronounced Ta-heen) Here in California it's usually sold near the produce, especially near fruit, and many people enjoy shaking a bit onto melon, cucumber, celery, and other such things. Also it's a great spice blend to cook with if you like things spicy.

When people say "Native American", they're usually speaking of tribes NORTH of Mexico, such as the Cherokee, Mohawk, Blackfoot, Lakota, and other northern tribes. From Mexico to the southern border of Panama, That's usually considered Central America, or Mezzo America, historically. And of course, everything further south is South America. Feel free to double check my details, but I think I got that right...
@JoshuanKnode
@JoshuanKnode 7 лет назад
Sifu Culreif Native tribes from south American and central ameria are usually recerred to "Mezo American" but "Native American" or "First Peoples" still works
@bernardoblanchetramirez6032
@bernardoblanchetramirez6032 7 лет назад
Sifu Culreif that is considered Mesoamericana, but it is still part of North America, not central.
@sifuculreif6448
@sifuculreif6448 7 лет назад
That's another thing, I'm pretty sure all parts of Central America that lie north of the panama canal are part of the North American continent.
@christianmartinez774
@christianmartinez774 7 лет назад
Well that's the thing right, majority of mexicans have a large amount of Native features and heritage. Although the majority are called mestizos for being mixed they could still be considered Native Americans(Whether they consider themselves as such is up to them)
@sifuculreif6448
@sifuculreif6448 7 лет назад
The main point I'm getting at is that Native Americans without any Mexican or Mesoamerican genetics might still have lower alcohol tolerance than Mexicans or Mesoamericans(referring to genetics, not heritage or national identity).

I'm Canadian Greek living in Toronto Canada. I go to Oaxaca every single month for weekends or a week at most. I will be importing this drink to Toronto one day. My wife is from Oaxaca, that is how i stated to go to Oaxaca so much after meeting in Cancun. Yes its a gorgeous, very safe, and touristy place. Also you pronounce is so perfectly. Wahaca, spelled, Oaxaca. Keep up the good work....leaving again next friday and back a few days later on Monday. Everything you said is 100% true... kindest regards, Theo

I almost stopped watching when it got to the commercial part, but I'm glad I watched it. The drink seems unusual and cool, and I the break from the normal video format was actually pretty interesting. Plus I thought it was cool to watch Simon actually make the coctail, it felt like "hey, Let's kick back and get buzzed with Simon." It's unusual that a commercial/endorsement could be so interesting. I'm going to check out shaker and spoon now.
