Topic: "Who are the Amalekites? A Biblical Mystery" - Z14 by Seth Fleishman
Synopsis: This lecture is the seventh part of our "Bronze Age Collapse" series. We are going to tackle one of the greatest Biblical mysteries: Who is Amalek? The Amalekites were a vicious foe of the early Israelites. Of the people in Canaan, they are second only to the Philistines in the number of references in the Bible. While the Philistines have rightfully garnered the most attention, it’s time to set our sights on the Amalekites. What can archaeology tell us? Is it possible that they were one of the Sea Peoples? We'll take all the information we've learned from the Bronze Age Collapse series and apply it to the people of Amalek. The origin of this diabolical enemy of the Israelites has been debated for centuries. What can we find out?

Great work Seth, I think identifying Amlk as Lycia helps also connect with the story of Purim as Hamman is identified as an Aggagi, maybe not litterally, but maybe he was a Lycian as they were Persian allies in their war with Greece. Maybe in the period of events this connection was more clearly understood bit later gets mixed into him being an Agaggi in our mythologic version that we are left with.

@@WorldHistorybyaJewTheChannel Of course the theory that Amalek was the Lukka people is far from proven, you make an excellent case. Hi again, Seth. Whilst re-watching this, I suddenly thought of my musical knowledge, and thought could any etymologies be discerned further from the music produced by ethnic regions. Could the scales or modes used by specific ethnic groups be traced back in some way to their ancestors, or at least hint to something that begs for more focus? Our modern modes/scales generally take their names from Greek regions, but the majority of them were to be located in Anatolia. The modes are: Ionian, Dor-ian ;) , Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Æolian and Locrian. Of all these names, the only one without a given people is mixolydian, with the word meaning 'half Lydian'. Whether that would be to the north or south, both the Lukka and Tjekker could be considered 'half Lydian', being either side of the known Lydian lands! Do you know of any cultural variation in ancient music of Israel through passed-down tradition? Whilst (modern) musical score is a relatively recent invention, songs and melodies have presumably remained unchanged for millennia, sung by generation after generation in scales/modes specific to their ancestral heritage. This might be a harder one to prove, but you may know of people who know more about music of the region than me :)

I was a bit confused about the two scripts. I believe the first one you presented was Linear A, which is a hireoglyphic script which has not been translated. Whereas, the second script presented is also a hireoglyphic script which has been translated. I believe the second script has also been called "Hittite Hireoglyphic"? I want to make sure I got this information straight. I watched the video twice, but there is quite a bit of information for me to keep straight.

Dick. The Lingua Franca of the Middle East during the Bronze Age was Akkadian Cuneiform for international communications. However, MOST Nations ALSO used the same cuneiform as their alphabet for internal native tongue communications. So one will find occasional multi-lingual archeological artifacts incorporating an ad hoc mixture of native/international cuneiform, local/foreign hieroglyphs, ad nauseam. The Luwians had their own native hieroglyphs and a native script as well (if memory serves). It gets occasionally muddled in my own my mind, so that I might misstate things at times. But you take my meaning, I hope.

This is a very interesting idea, except, the Amalekites are consistently described as neighbors of the Midianites in the southeast. You would have to show that people of Lukka settled there. It seems very unlikely the people of Lukka, who still lived in Lukka centuries older and had not been driven from theri homes, would take up residence in the desert, and that there would be no other Lukkans distributed along the way in between. The Amalekites became the Germans just so there could be Nazis to destroy the Jews is seriously out there. Until now I was taking you seriously.

great exploration of the evidence and a provocative conclusion. I'm wondering, in other Semitic languages, when they say "Lukka Men" or "People", what word do they use for Men or People? Do they use a cognate of "am", or something like "enosh" or a different noun? If they used a different word, that would detract from the case you're making.

Could tribes leave and come back? Could great leaders mix with other peoples? My next lecture may talk about it a little more (still formulating).

I wish I'd seen this lecture before. I hadn't come to it because of the title. I find your connection of AMLQ to LUQA totally believable and also all the rest of the evidence makes it a slam dunk. I would also add that Lachish has the same phonetics (if you pronounce it lakish instead of lahish). This would make it something like Place of the Luqa or, viceversa, the Amlq to be people of Lakish. What are your thoughts on this? What I find fascinating is the connection to Troy. Would you completely sepparate the Tjekker from the Luqqa or are they really the same people? Notice your table at 7:00, when the Luqqa aren't mentioned, that's when Tjekker appear (with Ramesses III)

Thanks for your kind words. Do you mind telling me why the title put you off? You have to understand that I very much like thinking outside the box, and I've never heard your Lachish comment before, but you would get some pushback due to the spelling difference. Lachish is spelled לכיש, and you need it spelled like this לקיש. Your point about the Tjeker is well-received, particularly when you factor in Mopsus, as told by Xanthos. I talk about the Tjeker more in lecture Z13 and Mopsus is the focus of lecture Z15D if interested.

I've been following your channel and binge watching on and off since your first appearance on SAMA. I'm rewatching all the Z15's. I think I wasn't interested in Amalek because I didn't imagine there was such a connection. I figured it was a minor character of the bible. I looked up the spelling in Hebrew you mention before posting the comment and maybe I'm just not enough of a semite to let it bother me. You yourself are showing that there are cognates and when the same town survives thousands of years and multiple cultures, the phonemes tend to change. That's also something I figure is more or less the difference between Lycia and Cilicia. I would see an easier connection between those two names for regions that are related than if you compare Lycia with Lukka. But a heavy foreign influence is playing it's part. Anyway I do commend you on the whole series and thank you very much for your kind answer. One last comment. Your slides are very information-packed but maybe you can make make your videos more appealing to a broader audience if you separate the info in more slides and increase the font. Otherwise, I find them very interesting.
@WorldHistorybyaJewTheChannel
@WorldHistorybyaJewTheChannel 3 года назад
Lachish ... I never said it was impossible, but there's more to it. Yes, language can be corrupted. (Check out my Habiru/Hebrew video). I believe Lachish is mentioned in Egyptian sources from Amenhotep II (1400s BCE), so that's an early date for Sea People to be settling. Nonetheless, I don't discount any well-thought ideas, unless there is proof otherwise. As for the slides, I get feedback both ways. My general idea is to try to fit one complete thought/point on a slide, but as you know, I often need to cover a good bit of material to get to my point. I'm afraid if it's spread over multiple slides, it would be harder to understand. I'm trying to teach a point, so that's what my goal is. The slides are definitely hard to see on a phone. No question.

The pottery studies were all from the last 20 years (most were even more recent), as was the hieroglyphic script, along with the crucial dating that comes with it. The Luwian document was never published and only just re-discovered and published a couple years ago. In general, dating has continued to improve and been refined. Even if this lecture doesn't talk about it much, I'll also add the data learned from DNA, especially in the last five years. In my next lecture, I'll be citing a number of linguistics studies from the last decade. Stay tuned ...

The etymology piece was impressive. Around 33:00 the speculation got jarring. Do you really think Linear A is Lycian or Luwian? There is some rich research on this, Lycian and Luwian are not the prime candidates for Linear A not even close. Linear A, almost surely, is not an Indo-European language and besides: Linear A had given way to Linear B by 1450, 200ish years before the period you are addressing.
@WorldHistorybyaJewTheChannel
Thanks for watching. I don't claim to be an expert on Linear A. (Is anyone?) The idea proposed here comes from the Luwian Studies organization. See here: luwianstudies.org . All my sources are listed on the slides.

As the Bible reports in the Book of Genesis Isaac who was aging and blind wanted to bless his older son Esau he asked Esau to hunt game prepare a meal for him and bring it to him so that he could give him the blessing before he died however Jacob and Esau's mother Rebecca overheard Isaac's intention and decided to intervene she favored Jacob and wanted him to receive the Blessing she devised a plan to deceive Isaac Rebecca told Jacob to fetch two young goats from the flock which she would prepare as a dish that tasted like the game Esau hunted she also instructed Jacob to wear Esau's clothes and put goat skins on his hands and neck to mimic Esau's hairy appearance Jacob followed his mother's instructions and presented himself to Isaac as if he were Esau Isaac was suspicious due to Jacob's voice sounding like Jacob's but Jacob assured him that he was Esau Isaac eventually believed Jacob and blessed him thinking he was blessing Esau Nations shall bow before you and your line shall extend all over the Earth your brother shall serve in your house after Jacob had received the Blessing. Then, just as Jacob left his father, Isaac, Esau came in from hunting. He also prepared some tasty food and brought it to his father. He said, "Father, rise and eat the food that your son killed for you, and then bless me." Isaac asked, "Who are you?" He answered, "I am your son-your firstborn son-Esau." Then Isaac trembled greatly and said, "Then who was it that hunted the animals and brought me food before you came? I ate it, and I blessed him, and it is too late now to take back my blessing." When Esau heard the words of his father, he let out a loud and bitter cry. He said to his father, "Bless me-me, too, my father!" But Isaac said, "Your brother came and tricked me. He has taken your blessing." Esau said, "Jacob[a] is the right name for him. He has tricked me these two times. He took away my share of everything you own, and now he has taken away my blessing." Then Esau asked, "Haven't you saved a blessing for me? "Isaac answered, "I gave Jacob the power to be master over you, and all his brothers will be his servants. And I kept him strong with grain and new wine. There is nothing left to give you, my son." But Esau continued, "Do you have only one blessing, Father? Bless me, too, Father!" Then Esau began to cry out loud. Isaac said to him, "You will live far away from the best land, far from the rain. You will live by using your sword, and you will be a slave to your brother. But when you struggle, you will break free from him." After that, Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing from Isaac. He thought to himself, "My father will soon die, and I will be sad for him. Then I will kill Jacob." (This hatred was passed down to his grandson Amalek, the father of the Amalekites.) Rebekah heard about Esau's plan to kill Jacob. So she sent for Jacob and said to him, "Listen, your brother Esau is comforting himself by planning to kill you. 43 So, my son, do what I say. My brother Laban is living in Haran. Go to him at once! 44 Stay with him for a while until your brother is not so angry. 45 In time, your brother will not be angry, and he will forget what you did to him. Then I will send a servant to bring you back. I don't want to lose both of my sons on the same day." Then Rebekah said to Isaac, "I am tired of Hittite women. If Jacob marries one of these Hittite women here in this land, I want to die." The Amorites - Tribes of The Nephilim Genesis 14:7 Deuteronomy 9 Judges 1:27-3

Pure speculation, but what if "lukka-people" weren't a specific tribe, at least initially, but perhaps they were a sort of "fifth column," i.e., if it meant something like "our own people who have turned against us," i.e., renegade Egyptians (in the Amarna case) who took advantage of the attacks by outsiders. If so, then I could imagine other people such as early Israelites adopting that term "lukka" to refer to their own "fifth column," and used it as an exonym for fellow Israelites who hadn't gone along with the community in the 40 years in the wilderness thing, and instead had become renegades who preyed on their own people. If true, the vehemence against "renegade elements" would make more sense. Similarly, this same term could have been used first as an exonym in other contexts (where lukka-people were perhaps still Egyptians, or others), and then ultimately became adopted by those people as an endonym. Again, pure speculation, of course, but perhaps there is evidence for or against?

@WorldHistorybyaJewTheChannel
@WorldHistorybyaJewTheChannel 3 года назад
Predominantly Semites, yes. (I don't think many people are 100% anything.) Remember Lebanon and Syria are made up countries thanks to France and England carving up the Middle East for themselves some 100 years ago. Ethnic Lebanese consider themselves Levantine, who go back to Phoenician and Canaanite times. Syrian Arabs are of course Arabs. All these groups spoke native Semitic languages, so this gives you a basis for all to be Semites.

Now not that God would ignore a single believer alone for some reason...the principle 'where two or three are gathered ' every word established by at least 2 and three Gods testimony is aided by our faith to follow old Hebrew order.Moses was aided by two making a display from heaven for 2 and three. That one little passed by point by narrator is golden B'H. Words Ancient filled with spiritual meaning. Seth was good study.

Seth - Couldn’t miss it, Seth. I’d of joined Zoom if I’d HAD TO, but figured you wouldn’t deny your youtube followers. WHAT A SURPRISE😁 I’ve been a Luwian follower for quit a while. I discovered Dr. Eberhard Zangger and his Luwian Studies Channel 3-4 years ago AND I try to keep up with Dr. Petra Goedegebuure’s lectures (she’s one of the handful of Luwian Language scholars you alluded to). INTERESTINGLY, after the Bronze Age Collapse, the Luwians of the south-western and Western coasts of Anatolia never lost their knowledge of writing (like the Greeks did) during the ‘’Collapse’s" ensuing ‘seeming’ dark age. And Dr. Z is keen to spark the archeology of the Luwians - the ‘West’ having been in denial about the Luwian’s ‘cultural’ contributions to Western Culture for about 3 millennia now. Time to shake up the orthodox history and archeology communities. Dr Zanger’s an Archeo-Geologist so he and his technologies have discovered MANY, MANY SITES and the orthodoxy don’t want to admit they’ve MISSED this history. 🤔 nevertheless, I remain 👍👌✌️🇺🇸🇳🇮

Also, I don't know if you've seen this article, but to bolster your theses, you can possibly add Ziklag as more Tjekker evidence. www.jstor.org/stable/1518418?seq=1#metadata_info_tab_contents

Yes, Ziklag (and Phicol) have interesting etymology, but it's a hrd connection to make, and I couldn't work it in. This was a much longer lecture than I intended! So ... this one wasn't about Tjeker, and not all etymology makes for good entertainment. Notice I didn't talk about the etymology of Goliath in his lecture either, and there is an abundance of info on that.

Then Moses/the other authors referred to their ancestor as “Amalek” because no one else would know him by his actual name, nor did anyone care. Imagine if the Amalekites were the ancestors of the Germans: this means they’re descendants of Esau, great-grandson of Abraham.
