Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. Many fans' P4P king, often described as 'the face of boxing'. Four weight world champion; currently holding all four belts at super-middlewight. But, who is the 168lbs king, Canelo Alvarez?
From very humble beginnings in Guadalajara, Mexico, Canelo has overcome adversity and hardship at every twist and turn in a glittering career which has taken him to the sporting and commercial pinnacle of the sweet science. Having mixed it in the squared circle with the likes of Genadiy Golovkin, Miguel Cotto, Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley, Canelo has been a firm fixture in boxing's biggest PPVs for the last decade.

Yes, he is definitely the face of boxing by some metrics. But there is an argument to suggest that perhaps he is being overtaken by the likes of Inoue, Fury, Garcia and Tank commercially...

Inoue is the p4p king but a lot of Americans don’t like watching fights under the 130 division. Garcia has all the shine right but it won’t last long unless he has another upset and tank needs another high caliber superstar boxer to help him sell a fight. Canelo doesn’t need another big name and has been the cash cow since fighting Floyd. That’s 10+ years of being the face of boxing

⁠@@OneOnOneBoxing the fighters you listed are only successful in their respective domestic market - and none of them are at the level of canelo’s commercial success He’s the only boxer featured on the top 10 highest paid athletes Forbes list and has fighters from welterweight (147lb) to cruiserweight (200lb) lining up and begging to fight him - that’s 6 whole divisions on their knees waiting for canelo to pick them Further, Terrence Crawford, Tyson Fury, Ryan Garcia, and Tank pay to go see Canelo fight - not the other way around Matter fact, last Sat. Tank went to Canelo’s locker room and asked for a picture hoping that it will help sell his upcoming fight 😅 Tank and Ryan needed each other to reach $1M+ PPVs sold - and they only did it once - Canelo has done it at least 4 times and currently holds one of the top 5 biggest selling ppv fights in boxing history (Mayweather vs Canelo, reported $2.2M+) the world we live in today, is not the same world it was 100 yrs ago, hell it’s drastically different from the world 30y ago - it takes time but you will soon be able to reconcile the objective truth of this I am certain -cheers

That is very much the case... But there is a bit more of an argument around this now, with the likes of Fury, Inoue, Tank and Garcia's profiles all rising rapidly in recent years.

Canelos trainer/manager said it best. Benavidez is a great boxer but if canelo does or doesn’t fight him it doesn’t mean nothing for his legacy, Benavidez is not a multi division world champion, he has never unified a division and has never stepped up with the greats and beat them. That’s why they say he brings nothing to the table and they’re right Benavidez has not done anything in boxing except win the wbc title 2 separate times and both were in a vacant title fight. He didn’t take it from a champ. It’s a good fight but to say canelo is scared of someone who has not proven themselves is ridiculous and specially since Benavidez best wins are a guy who already lost to canelo and Andrade who had never fought a champion before Benavidez. Benavidez has not even faced someone close to the caliber of ggg to see how he would do when in a fight were the other guy punches just as hard if not harder!!

Dude canelo is great, but he lost his first fight with ggg, and you could argue he lost the 2nd, and the fight with Lara. He is a great boxer but he has been gifted a lot of shit. So, he would have an Asterix to his name for me.

The judges made the call not Canelo. At the time of the first fight he was still with golden boy and there has been birds whispering about how Oscar finds his way to some judges pockets. But I feel like Canelo giving GGG the trilogy is the best way to make up for those first 2 fights. GGG may have "lost" but it's hard to be mad/loser when you made $82 million in those 3 fights.

@@terrycruise-zd5tw first he was 23 which was expected not even i thought he would win the fight. Second nelo started his career at 40 so losing to a 175 pounder isnt out of the realm. Its the equivalent of volkanoski going to up to fight mahkacheav and losing like he did. Thats what happens when you dare to be great. A risk indeed fighting a guy that has been use to that weight his entire career. Its funny you dont factor his stature and overall build. You are just those casual boxing fans that once they see a loss they dispose that entire boxer’s resume in the bin without factoring just about anything. Fickle i tell you. As for ggg, canelo legit probably had one fight at 160 before facing ggg and won the second fight. I still highly respect ggg for his ability and one of my favorites but you dont put him in the same regard. First fight was a tie, the last 2 canelo schooled triple G. Everyone knows this. And no, being able to survive canelos power punches for 12 rounds doesn’t mean the person won. Seems like triple G fans fail to understand that. I just feel bad for triple G, cuz every other boxer out there decided to duck him during his prime. That’s why I respect canelo, cuz he actually fought him unlike the other so called champions.
