His dad was Pastor Degrate and he was fire with the music. He can look him up also his son is also a genius. Even better than his father. Devante stacked the vocals so much until it sounded like a church choir also he was one of the first to use harmony notes like Dimished 7’s and other Chromatic scales in R&B music.
Yes, he is the king of stacking that produces a rich, in-depth rhythms overlay with vocal harmony. Did he study classical piano? I would love if he did a concerto. That's would be awesome. My favorite is MY HEART BELONGS TO YOU. Great video!! Excellent content.
This is why he doesn't get the credit. “When Puff came around, he and I started going to clubs, and we said that’s going to be our image,” Dalvin said, referring to a more b-boy style. “Andre and them hated the idea. Puff had his ear to the streets, he knew what was hot, so we trusted him.” “Puffy made Jodeci in his image,” Wrigiht remembered." "Stylist and designer Sybil Pennix, who came on board for their second album, would be the one to embrace their inner rock ’n’ roll psyches. “I was doing things people wouldn’t expect, like boots and shorts in the summer, leather in the desert,” Pennix said. “I pushed the fashion envelope. I was a rebel."
Dude is a genius, flat out. Then they had two sets of brothers producing and singing. Because, K-Ci and Jo Jo's vocals were real stupid. This is why they'll always be one of my favorite bands.
Funny story. My sister ( now 46 ) was a huge Devante fan. In the early 90s they did a concert at the Louisville gardens. My sister and cousin went. My mom and I went to pick them and waited in front. My sister came out and got in the back seat. Seconds later she started screaming and ran out of the car. Davante walked outside and girls just started running. My mom told me to go get my sister. When I went up to get her, Devante picked me up and continued to sign autographs and take pics ❤
@@TCapo1185 lol yeah like he picked me up and held me while he signed autographs and took pics haha. I remember him walking with a cane too. Which was weird lol
@@unscrown4595 Yeah. Magoo, Ginuwine, Static Major, Missy Elliott(when she was in a group called SISTA)and Timbaland were also discover by Devante. They were all with his Swing Mob records crew. So much time so much amazing talent in one bunch.
This man is the definition of underrated! His talent is absolutely incredible. I wish he hadn't had the troubles he did.... i think he fell to the temptation of the industry and to his own ego. Seems like he had some karma to pay. But this man's talent is scary good! ❤
I was already hooked on K-Ci & JoJo when they sang background vocals for Father MC but when the 1st Jodeci album came out, this was an instant classic. With Diary of a Mad Band they cemented their status and DeVante brought that sultry funky R&B sound that still sound dope today. I can listen to Jodeci any day and still feel their music. To me, my favorite R&B group of all time. My favorite track is a non-album but a track that features Tha Dogg Pound "Come up to my room" - BANGER!!!
Fun fact: my heart belongs to you was one of the songs from their demo. So was Love you for life and Every moment (song from their 2014 album). There are multiple versions of alot of their songs bc of his perfectionism.
I can listen to Time and Place and Pump it back off Jodeci the show the after party and the hotel all day long . Even if it was just the instrumentals ! I wish Davante could have done more wrk w/ H Town . Too many songs to name . Great summertime memories in charlotte NC jamming to their cds .
i find it hard to believe not only jodeci, but devante does not have a grammy nor have ever been nominated for any smfh. THEY NEED THE LIFE TIME ACHIEVEMENT award ASAP. Still waiting on the bio movie too
His mistake as a boss with such talent as Timbaland, Ginuwine, Missy, and more though was taking the suge night mob mentality. Suge was involved in Jodecis business dealings and helped them in some ways and so Devante must end up thinking that’s how you do it, I think. If he treated his artist better he could have one of the greatest labels/music management/productions going. So would suge have had as well..
He tried to get Jimmy Ivine to sign them but He didn’t know what to do with all that talent. Devante lost his way but he tried to get them signed. We human we make mistakes they all have made amends with Devante he’s no different from any other human being he didn’t kill anyone.
Super excited ..going to the show tomorrow night , and to say we’re lucky to have Davante actually at these shows now ..omgggggg ..would be an understatement 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻😊
Yes! Was there on 3/15 and it was AMAAAZINGGGG!!!! All four were there although Jo Jo got a little sick, k-ci’s mic stayed on! I am so happy that someone is giving Devonte his flowers because he deserves it!
So grateful to meet KC back in 1992 at a club called...Volcano's in Baltimore, Maryland my hometown. l shook his hand and went back on the dance floor.
Devante was and still is my favorite RnB producer and Jodeci always been my favorite group. Ppl nowadays would never understand the impact they had on the music industry and still are copied today.
Puff styled them more on the first album…. To give them the homeboy “New York” look since they were from the south originally. Sybil phenix styled them during the diary of the mad band era….. introducing the black leather look… almost like a rock star type style.
There is one interview floating around. The interview was Devante, Kci, and Dalvin. They were in Europe in the early 2000's. You would love it. It's the most I've seen him talk in years.
Mr Donald Is A Great Musician,He’s A Great Dad To Justin Dyana and Sky Blu,He’s An Awesome Grandpa,&He Gives The Greatest Advice,& He Is Producing Up and Coming Artist,As Well As New Music From……I Can’t Give Yall Everything!!!
That was thoughtful! And awesome... I've actually crossed paths with devante, and he was a mentor to my group! Straight Amazing! Guy! Definitely needs to do a book! And 2 , at least, greatest hits!
Funny me, my cuzins went to one of the concerts like 95 in Denver, i said we're gonna meet them. We did meet and just sat and talked to Devante. He was so nice to us, and never tired to do anything❤
ALL My LIFE by KC and Jo Jo correction 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 is my VERY favorite 😅😅😅if that's a word 💯 MADE ME cry at Ms Universe ❤️ pageant as The ladies walked in
Everyone is influenced by someone else. As dope as DeVante is, it's common knowledge that he was HIGHLY inspired by Commissioned. Just throwing that out there, cause its God over EVERYTHING on mine!
@@AbouttheMusic729 it’s an interview where Devante says even in the forever my lady video they altered their outfits because they didn’t want to be dressy looking. So they cut those linen dress pants to shorts. I went back and looked at the video and I could see that those outfits was altered and those shorts definitely used to be pants lol.
The crazy thing about when he was playing the piano live, ALL those songs were Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.....they are DEF in top 10 greatest of all time
She said that Diary of Mad Band is arguably perfect.. the argument is the back end of that album. Devante hadn't fully left the swing sound behind and those records didn't date well. I actually think their following album is perfect in the sense there aren't any songs to skip on that one
I actually disagree about the back end of Diary Of A Mad Band. You could argue it’s not as pristine as the first half, but most of the songs are still extraordinary in their own right. I personally think ‘Gimme All You Got’ is an under appreciated record. Production is amazing all throughout.
