Is my wifi not working? Yes. Am I still gonna watch this on my phone data? Yes. Absolutely worth it! I'm glad to see that you are back with such a great project! I'm looking forward to the next parts!
Hope your wifi starts working again. Thank you! Yes I'm also looking forward to part 2. It will cover the rest of the Second Age and I think it's really interesting.
The (ever increasing) quality and quantity of intensely detailed original analysis and speculation applied by ThePhilosophersGames to specific aspects of Tolkien's histories of Arda brings me such wonderful new perpspectives on the works despite my decades-long familiarity with most of his writings. To me, ThePhilosophersGames has created a virtual curriculum of Tolkien material whose entertainment value vies favourably with Jackson's original trilogy.
Thank you 😊 Always great to hear that I could bring new perspective on things, even for people who are very familiar with the books! I think this multiple part video also dives even deeper than usual.
@Jermaine Savory Thank you ^^ Much appreciated. It's always very humbling and encouraging, if people write about getting into the Legendarium and reading the books. Much appreciated. PS: I know people don't know and it is absolutely counter-intuitive, but at least for me it's really hard to see replies to older comments. I catch some, but not all, because my comment list in the YT creator studio sorts by newest stand-alone comment, not by newest replies (this feature is needed). So if you answer to a 4 week old comment I have to scroll down a lot to find it. As a result it's almost impossible to find those replies for me, if I don't check old comments manually. In this case I got pinged and saw it this way, but that does not always happen. So if you want to make sure I see a comment, write a new one 😅
I've now listened right through your video twice, and parts several times to pick up extra details. I really enjoyed Part 1 of your latest epic. How enchanting it would be if we could all sit around a log fire evening-after-evening in some Middle Earthian hall or wooded glade, listening to your teachings on the lore of Tolkien; but we're already so lucky to have your videos. Thanks for all the work you put into them!
Well well well, this is a nice suprise on my sunday :) I obviously haven't seen it yet, because it came out like 8 minutes ago, but I assume it is gonna be epic! And I am going to enjoy it!
I hope people will enjoy it. It is for sure my deepest dive into the lore and this is just part one where we mainly cover Elrond's ancestors and the First Age. I think the really good parts come in the Second and Third Age. Very excited what people will think.
haha I remember this flash video thing from the early 2000s, which was a LotR parody and Elrond says: "We have to dstroy the Ring Mr. Ander... eeh, I mean Isildur." 😂
@@chewygad7899 Should we not be asking, How is Elrond? Won't someone take the time to ask if this great leader is doing well? What of his mental health, that length of time to just be alive would take its toll never mind all the battles he has fought.
Okay, this is very impressive. Long, ambitious, and comprehensive. And this is only the first part, maybe I’m biased but no complaints there lol, we just can’t talk enough about Elrond! Imo he has always been the most special of all elves, and I’ve always considered him to be at the heart of the history of ME. His story fills your heart with so much sadness and at the same time hope and warmth, and it taught me so many valuable lessons during a very hard time in my life. He will always be the GOAT, hands down. 🥰 Thank you for this video and the rest to come.
Thank you, much appreciated! This really is an ambitious project and the biggest video I have ever done. The positive feedback means a lot to me. Well said, that is also why it's one of my favourite characters too. His story really is a sad one, but you can (as you say) learn a lot from it!
So happy you released this video! It’s been quite a while since we’ve had a deep dive like this. You should be given an honorary doctorate for all your hard work on Tolkien!
haha thank you ^^ Yes it was quite a while. I stared planning this video in Januaray and it (and the other script for the other parts) were in full production for some months
Yes I can't believe it myself too. I started planning in January/February and worked in the script for months. Now part one is there. I'm really excited!
So happy that you released this. And, I note from another comment that you plan to keep going with the book/movie series, so thrilled about that as well ❤️
I really appreciate you bringing C.S.Lewis into the story of J.R.R.Tolkien.. SUBSCRIBED As a kid in the 70s there was Heinlein, Edgar Rice Borroughs, Tolkien and C.S.L.... All great creators of vast and epic worlds.. Lazerus Long.. Barsoom.. etc.. i love the depth of your episodes. Thank you...
I feel as if you should send out certificates in Tolkienology to any subscriber who can watch all your videos and pass a multiple choice exam. I appreciate how in depth your videos are and how high the quality of your research is. I feel like I'm taking a university course online which I personally love. So many channels cover surface level material that a fan deep in the lore likely already knows (which I also appreciate but in a different way.) However, I learn something new anytime you produce a video. So to you, do I raise a mug of Green Dragon Ale. Prost und Zum Wohl!
Thank you, very happy to read :) Yes I have to admit with this video (plus the others) I think I reached a new level of detail, though the best parts will come in the next parts. I cover multiple versions of many texts, etc and hope it's not too much like university (some people might not like that 😂). I hope it's still fun to watch. Tried to fun a balance here. I'm very curious what people will think. I'm very excited.
If it is too much for some, to strike a good balance you can always alternate a shorter video with the long one. Plus it might prove beneficial to your stress level.
I'm a reader who likes to dig out information for myself. I first read LOTR and the indices more than 50 years ago, and have remained a source guy, not one fixated on visual adaptations. But bless the ROPers, their ever-growing dumpster fire has had the unexpected consequence of making me return to the lore. I'm making my own, much deeper dive into the early days, especially being enchanted by the Beginnings and the Years of the Trees. But here I want to thank you for your great work. I can much more easily digest what you're presenting because I have a much surer foundation, also recently having purchased "The Nature of Middle Earth" and re-reading select parts of the Silmarillion. This video of yours is wonderful, and the art work is beautiful and appropriate for the spoken text. You are among the Good Guys that unite this widespread and (if they but knew it) potentially powerful voice against the Amazon defilement.
A new 2 hour PHGames video? Don’t mind if I do! Absolutely love the dedication you put into each and every video and the passion you show for Tolkien’s works. I’m excited to watch this, please don’t stop making amazing content!
Thank you ^^ this really is a passion project and I can't wait until the next parts are done too, which might take some weeks though. I hope you enjoyed this one already. I won't stop ^^
This is such a phenomenal video. I have watched it three times already and I will probably watch it many more times in the future. Bravo sir, you have created yet another all time great lotr lore video. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the effort.
Thank you again ^^ Really happy that you and the others enjoy the video so much and that the feedback on it is so positive. It was really a ton of work to make
Currently getting ready to *Rewatch* all 9 of your Elrond videos (in order) tonight. Keep being awesome Chris. Your videos are amazing so please don’t ever change your format. Thank you my dude. Cheers🤘I’m off to listen about Elrond and all aspects of his life for the next ~9 hours.
I always love clicking on your vids and seeing it says part 1 an then I realize it's 2hours long lol...how you doing btw been awhile since I've commented but always been watching...changed my user name so you might not remember me, but hope your well. Edit: hey I noticed you were still using the 9.5 years per valain year, hasn't it been suggested that has changed since the release of the new book to be 140 years per Vyear. ...ah ok I see you mention the nature book, so what do you think that 9.5 works better or 140 ? I just wonder why you didn't change it, you always seam to put thought into these choices so yeah just curious about it now lol
Yes this was a project I worked on for a long time now and now the first 2 hours are already released. But there's still a long Second Age section and a long Third Age section left 😅 What was your old username? Was it also a Star Wars LotR Combination? When I wrote the script the new book (Nature of Middle-earth) was not out yet. I only knew a bit of the preview stuff. Ofc the idea of 144 years was already mentioned before. E.g. in Morgoth's Ring or even in Appendix D of LotR "It seems clear that the Eldar in Middle-earth, who had, as Samwise remarked, more time at their disposal, reckoned in long periods, and the Quenya word yén, often translated ‘year’ (p. 377), really means 144 of our years." But if we apply it to the dates we know time spans in the old times become unreasonable. E.g. Fingolfin and his people start to cross Helcaraxë Year of the Trees 1497 and reach Middle-earth Years of the Sun 1. With the old calculations it's around 30 solar years, which still is an extremely long time, but with the later idea of 144 solar years, it takes 432 solar years, that seems unreasonably long. The Edain (according to Nature of Middle-earth) needed 50 solar years to move all people from Middle-earth to Elenna/Númenor with ships. It's strange that the Elves resided in this cold and deadly place for over 400 years. Or the Noldor want to leave Aman and move north to Araman towards Helcaraxë. TThe needed around 10 solar years before, now its 144 solar years. What did they do all the time? To explain all this one needs a lot of extra rules and this makes time unnecessarily complicated in my opinion. In Nature of Middle-earth Tolkien even discusses "ageing rates" of Elves, but they are quite complicated. When it comes to dates and times, I think they should be easy. As a result I prefer 10 solar years = 1 Valian year (9.582 solar years = 1 Valian year).
Thank you for producing this…it is just what I need, passing through a time of change and sadness. It helps to reflect on the far vision of Tolkien: that this world, even in its sometimes beauty, is not my true home. It’s been almost 60 years since I first read the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings….then in years to come all of Christopher’s great editorial work…and the Letters. The great truths behind this work will always offer restoration and healing, bringing us closer to the Myth That Is True. Thanks again for your good work and for being faithful to the author.
Happy that it could help you a bit in difficult times. All the best to you! Yes agreed. The stories really have a beauty and some wisdom inside them, that can help you to put things into perspective and get something comfortable out of it. I think it's also awesome that it connects many generations of people. My Tolkien videos reach a very wide audience, while e.g. my gaming related content manages to accomplish this far less.
@@ThePhilosophersGames Well, please know that your work is very much appreciated! I’ve listened to and enjoy all your Tolkien content. I’m looking forward to part 2 of this series.
I finally finished watching this. Excellent video, Chris. You give us so much detail and in such an organized fashion, which makes your points very easy to follow. Can't wait for the next next video! 😁
happy you enjoyed it ^^ I was a bit worried, that it might be a bit hard to follow (also the sound is not great). Next video will have the same worry 😂 It covers a lot of details and different versions of Tolkien's text.
@@ThePhilosophersGames No. It was easy to follow because of the accompanying art work and the reiteration of your points. You were kind of reviewing as you were going along and providing details too, a lot of which I have seen on other videos. The length was the only issue, but everyone can just watch it at their own pace. That's what I did. It took me three views, but it was more than worth it.😁
After several months of work, here it is: The Who is Elrond Video Part 1 about his ancestors and his life in the early Second Age. I hope you enjoy. There might be some mistakes. E.g. in the Nature of Middle-earth there is some additional information, but it was not out when I wrote this. I will include some of the new information from NoMe in the next parts though. I still work on the time stamps for RU-vid. Also there will be an unlisted all in one version once all parts are done, link will be in the description (I plan one for the Second Age and one for the third Age, but maybe I need four parts) ► Artwork and special thanks to: ➥ Kimberly80 - deviantart.com/kimberly80 ➥ Ted Nasmith - tednasmith.com ➥ Jenny Dolfen Art - patreon.com/jennydolfen ( goldseven.wordpress.com - etsy.com/de/shop/JennyDolfen ) ➥ Sara Morello Art - deviantart.com/samo-art ➥ Pete Amachree - artstation.com/summerpudding ➥ Niahti - artstation.com/niahti ➥ BeneF - deviantart.com/benef ➥ Laura Tolton - deviantart.com/lauratolton ► Social Media: ➥ Twitter (@PhilosophGames): twitter.com/philosophgames ➥ Twitch Channel - twitch.tv/thephilosophersgames ➥ Discord Server - discord.gg/SPW68vh ➥ RU-vid: ru-vid.com ► Of Games and Rings Podcast: ➥ Spotify - open.spotify.com/episode/4xQxgWbFa0atp1t6Hor2lt?si=4wcrIQkoSReVmwFx38x7WA ➥ Apple (iTunes) - podcasts.apple.com/de/podcast/of-games-rings-podcast/id1558176308 (short link: apple.co/3tq0WQj ) ➥ Google Podcasts - podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkLnBvZGJlYW4uY29tL29nYXIvZmVlZC54bWw ➥ Podbean - ogar.podbean.com
Thank you ^^ I hope so too to be honest. Esp. part 2 will be really interesting. It's imo in quality and detail far better than my Sauron video. But maybe both videos lack a bit of focus here and there. I guess if I made a Sauron video today, it would also be several hours long.
@@ThePhilosophersGames My thoughts exactly. The "old" Who is Sauron is still beyond most other sources so there would be no need to remake it within the foreseeable future. And yes, it would surely get longer. 😉
the sheer amount of time need to weave together these history's of places and races plus many many individual people is amazing to me no wonder it took him a life time to almost complete it but not quite
1:40:48 You say that Galadriel and Celeborn moved out of Beleriand after the fall of Nargothrond, but I think 'ere' is archaic for 'before'. I guess this implies that they left Doriath (strangely enough) before its ruin, so maybe even the dwarves of Nogrod helped them passing the mountains. Anyway, this is a really fascinating detail I was not aware of, I used to think that they witnessed the battle of the thousand caves and second kinslaying and thereafter lingered at the havens of Sirion... I wonder if they even left during the siege of Angband? The Blue Mountains were harder to reach safely after the Dagor Bragollach. And thank you for the ride!
Yes my mistake, thanks for the hint (and the time code), I put it in the mistakes section. I wanted to say around that time, but before Nargothrond fell, so that they are gone when it happens. I remember looking up the word, but still made the mistake, maybe it was late 😂
Thank you! I'm currently not working on it with full force, because I want to publish another for my channel important project first, which also took again longer than I planned. If it's done I go into full production of part 2, but can't say how long it will take in the end. Voice recording (+ fine tuning the script) and editing eat a lot of time in these very long videos and I plan to maybe add some Nature of Middle-earth information for it too. I hope people will are patient with me.
Tolkien is no mere writer. He was a creator. IMO, he was Eru Iluvatar....and it was he who created the shifting mysteries and stories we've loved for nearly a century. IMO, he was not a writer of high fantasy. He IS high fantasy. And his stories are holistic studies of Creation and Life itself. Were he alive today...I'd hug him and thank him for a lifetime of love...for just one book: The Silmarillion. PS Of Beren and Luthien is the greatest romantic story of all time.
I waited til I could watch it in 2 parts, I didn't want to watch 10 mins here, 20 mins there, so finally I got some free time and very much enjoyed the video, I read the silmarillion once, 10 years ago, so you can imagine I remember like 10% of what I read lol thank you for your hard work and passion, have a great day!
Finally a lore video have been released. I hope this will mean that The Differences between Film and Books series will continue as it has been postponed for waaaay too long. I mean, we're still at the point when Frodo has woken up after being healed after passed out due to the curse/sickness of the Morgûl Blade and Sam hasn't arrived yet happy to see his master being alive and well. I hope after this the Film/Book videos will start up again and be released more frequently as we still need to get to The Council of Elrond and get passed that point very soon (I'm anxious and eager to see not only The Counsil of Elrond but The Ring Goes South, The Fellowship attempting crossing the Caradhras, The Mines of Moria and so on).
The funny thing is, that this video was supposed to be part of that series. Frodo wakes up and sees Elrond, and now let us talk about that character that is very prominent in this (Many Meetings) and the next chapter. I expected a slightly longer video than the "Who is Glorfindel" video (which is also a special episode of the series), but I worked on the script for months and it continued to grow to the point where I decided to make it a stand alone video coming in multiple parts (I think I explained that already, but can't remember whom I wrote it). So see it as unofficial special episodes. I will continue with the series after it. I'm really looking forward to the Moria section, but that is still far off at my pace
I finished watching bro! Took me a while since I didn't have 2 hours in a row, but I really enjoyed it (as I predicted in an earlier comment) I am looking forward to the next two parts! Many thanks!
Awesome!! I love these deep dives into the characters that you do. You always mine out every little gem and sometimes even find stuff I didn't know.. which, if I may say is quite the feat. The art you find and use is always amazing!! And I especially like you leaning in to the rolled R's.. I'm betting you get a lot of comments about them. (To us Americans the rolled R's are pretty impressive.) 😎🤯
Thank you ^^ Nice to hear I that I could provide something that even experienced Tolkien fans did not know (I also learn always something new while ding research). I'm also very grateful that so many very talented artists allowed me to use their works in my videos. So always shout-outs to them. Yes I get a lot of comments on my rolled Rs, but they are mixed though. Some people like them, others absolutely hate them and let me know 😅
Thank you ^^ It took a while. And if you consider there are 7 more parts of it, the answer becomes almost a whole year 😅 It was really a big project and 2 parts are still mossing, which will come after RoP is done. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YgQg_lZlnx0.html
Damn, the effort level! Good job, man! Only note: you've clearly researched the hell out of this and in some places know too much to fit in your script, and therefore add these extra points and thoughts as visual texts while discussing something. It made it nigh impossible to follow both, so when I was looking at the screen instead of just listening, I found myself pausing to read and then rewatch the same bits to understand what you said.
Thank you ^^ It was really a long project that I worked on for many months and still not fully done; here are all parts released so far: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YgQg_lZlnx0.html (in case you have not noticed them yet). Yes agreed it's probably a bit much and in this video I often show texts not long enough, which gets - I hope - better in the other parts. At least I tried to improve it a bit 😅
happy you enjoyed it ^^ Yes will take soem time too, because voice recording and editing long videos with this lengths forever, but it will be much faster compared to episode 1, which had the pre production phase (research, writing).
Elrond has all the combined bloodline of the first pure clans of Elves and Men in him. Also Maiar. He has Telerin blood through Thingol, Vanyarin through Indis, Noldorin through Finwe, first three houses of Men through Beren, also blood of the Maiar through Melian and yes closely related to his mother-in-law Galadriel.
when your as old as Elrond you pick up a few skills , so i have zero problem with the things he's a master of. and i'd love to see someone do a Cirdan based TV show he seems to have been on middle earth longer than just about all other Elves if not all . so he must have seen and done some stuff i'd very much like to see that
We need Finrod and Turin videos! I don’t think you have covered these two - but I love your deep dives - and these are two are rich characters that need your treatment!
Agreed Finrod is missing. Túrin too, though I covered parts of his story already in my video about Dragons, though it's a very early video of mine and not as in-depth as it would be, if I made it today. Much did I learn since then. Thank you, happy you enjoyed those, sadly it takes quite some time to make them 😅 I also want to cover Galadriel or the history of the Dwarves.
Thank you ^^ Yes I'm also looking forward to releasing it when it's done. I think part two will be really interesting and I really like that part of the script. Not to speak about part 3, where a lot of tragedy lies.
I think the two most important Tolkien characters were Dior and Finrod. Dior because he was the most beautiful ever to exist and yet has such a short story. He was the perfection which should be but can't be because our world is imperfect. He is the innocent child. Finrod because he is what Tolkien was trying to tell us. How should someone who is like a god view the imperfection of humanity? Should he be disgusted or he should he be amazed? Should God be more impressed with his ability to do anything with no problem or that I actually summon the ability to get out of bed in the morning knowing that probably everything I will encounter will be against me and more powerful than me?
haha nichts zu Danken. glad you found your way to my channel and welcome. Currently a lot of people seem to enjoy my Who is Elrond videos. Very happy to see. They took ages to make 😅 Though the last 2 or 3 parts are still not done.
Listening to the Elrond videos again and just realized how much drama the elves have among themselves in the first half of this video. I'm gonna rename it Days of Our Elves or As Middle-Earth Turns. 😁
Hello friend! I noticed around 37:09 that you said that this was 'the first bloodshed and killing of own kin at all in the... Undying Lands'. You are obviously correct that it is the first killing of kin (unless you count Feanor's mother's death in childbirth) but wasn't blood shed prior when Finwë was slain?
1:04:58 I feel the need to correct a detail here. Fingolfin and his sons DID participate in the Kinslaying, though they came upon the battle while it was in progress and joined without knowing what it was being fought over. Still, they were well aware of how terrible a crime Kinslaying was: and indeed were closer kin to the Teleri than Fëanor and his followers. Additionally, although Turgon became embittered towards the Sons of Fëanor on account of Elenwë’s death: he strongly supported Fëanor in the beginning and likely still agreed with him philosophically on many counts. This would likely have been well known. Thus, Idril would have had a complicated relationship with the Sindar at the Havens. However, Círdan would not have tolerated any serious conflicts between the residents. Likely however, this is one of the reasons why Idril and Tuor sail for the West before the Third Kinslaying.
To my knowledge only Fingon participated and he did not know what happened and just helped his kin (not sure if there's another version). That does ofc not excuse him completely, but changes the intention and guilt. Also Tolkien rewrote some details many times. In some later versions even Galadriel fights against the Noldor. It's hard to say what one takes as granted. In the Silmarillion it states "Fingolfin and Turgon his son therefore spoke against Fëanor", so they were not the biggest fans of him. Fingon had a good relationship to Maedhros.
@@ThePhilosophersGames hmmm, I’ll admit it makes more sense to conceive of Turgon being reluctant: given that he becomes bffs with Thorondor. However, I know of only one version of the First Kinslaying: and that is the Silmarillion version. If it were only Fingon who participated, then surely he would be named specifically. Rather however, the Silmarillion says it was the “Host of Fingolfin” who joined the battle. Though it specifies that Fingon was in the forefront, this seems to indicate that it was not solely Fingon who joined the fight. Angrod’s argument with Thingol also indicates this strongly. He does not attempt to argue that the majority of the Noldor are innocent (as would be the case if it were only the Fëanorians and Fingon who fought): but rather that the suffering they have faced since is sufficient punishment. While Angrod himself is specifically stated to be innocent: he is clearly aware that most of those he traveled with on the Ice were not. The common interpretation of the Silmarillion anyway, is that anyone in Fingolfin’s Host is guilty unless otherwise stated (Glórfindel is an explicitly named exception). Though I certainly do not think one must always accept the common interpretation of the Silmarillion: as there are some common takes which are… dubious at best.
haha yes this part is mostly about his ancestors 😄 This long video project often covers a lot of other things (all parts will be like 8+ hours; 7h I have produced so far; playlist is here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YgQg_lZlnx0.html ).
I’ll post a better comment in a moment but am curious about how the John Williams Waterhouse print featured at 1:12:00 -ish made it into this video. I’ve had a small framed copy of this print in my dressing area at home for at least 35 years. I loved mermaids long before it was “cool” . Ok , back to the video!
OK that is a cool! The reason (very unspectacular): I have so much art work that i can use, but mermaids are not among them, so I needed to find something and this was on the Wikipedia mermaid page and marked as Public Domain ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mermaid ) so I can legally use it without a license or permission 😅
@@ThePhilosophersGames how bizarre! I loved it . I have 3-4 other pictures like this and they are boxed up to move (which never happened). I’ll put them up after I paint. Yes she is my favorite mermaid picture!
When all the Lore is looked at and there are different versions of an event, they should make a choice of what they think Tolkein ment, and then they could make what if episodes of the versions they think Tolkein replaced.
I plan to do a comparison of the 1st Edition of The Hobbit and the edition common today (5th edition) at some point (but no idea when i have the time for that, but it's on my radar). The biggest difference is the chapter Riddles in the Dark ofc.
I thought about something like a simply animated time line thing too in the past. But it adds quite some work to the editing process and it needs some planning too. But yes maybe in the future I would try it out PS: I miss clicked and anciently deleted you comment 😅 sorry, but I red it PPS: A comparison of all versions is a tremendously amount of work and very tedious. Not sure if I want to do that, but I can see compare two versions. There is an old manuscript of The Hobbit (very early version) published in History of the Hobbit. For LotR there are several History of Middle-earth books The Return of the Shadow (The History of The Lord of the Rings vol. 1), The Treason of Isengard (The History of The Lord of the Rings vol. 2), The War of the Ring (The History of The Lord of the Rings vol. 3), Sauron Defeated (The History of The Lord of the Rings vol. 4). This has early versions of the script. In Nature of Middle-earth there is also an early version of the White Rider chapter published. But I rarely look into those.
@@ThePhilosophersGames Thank you, yes. And yes it may be tedious, but I saw no one else has done any of these older versions on RU-vid. Perhapsrhaps you and your channel would benefit from having a video for each version comparing it to the current one and what happened in the movie. I imagine it would also save you some time and effort since you would already have the template for the final version and movie ready after the first video. You could also keep the with a small version number next to them on the timeline and subsequent videos showing the difference but not needng to address it much other than "While in version X this had happened, here it happened many years later." etc. And "Be sure to watch Y video to learn more of that version of Tolkin's story.". You would literally have the only videos explaining to the Lord of the Rings fans all the different versions and how they ended up becoming what we know now. Also, that way you can do it all in your own time with different videos being shorter. I myself had to stop halfway through one of your videos and will be finishing the other hour later. And while I do personally enjoy these long-format videos, most of my generation and the New Generation Z have the attention span of golldfish. If I recall, to get monetized and having the algorithms favoring you the videos have to be at least 10 minutes long.
It's my logo, but - as you thought - the idea behind it was inspired by Hitchcock. If I remember correctlIy (I made this a really long time ago) I used an image of a statue to help draw the silhouette with some small changes. Maybe it was the "The Thinker" without the hand or the statue of Socrates without the beard in Athens (I think it was the latter)? I thought it would fit my channel name, which is a Metal Gear Solid reference though 😂
No problem, happy you found your way here, happy I could answer your question. In all those years you are the second person who noticed and wrote a comment about it 😄
I think, isn't elrond one of the oldest characters in lotr? Because he fought in a battle 3000 years before the events of lot. He's one of the characters that goes through the whole entire saga from silmarillion to return of the king.
He’s one of the oldest characters, but one of the younger elves. Galadriel & Celeborn, Círdan, Gildor Inglorion and probably even Thranduil are older. Even Glórfindel is older if you count his first and second life together.
Great video. It's just a bit more than who is Elrond. 🤣 I think I could read the Silmarillion faster. As for Elros & Elrond in the War of Wrath, I've always taken it that they were involved as they reached adulthood. I believe the Half Elven age through youth the same or very similar to Men as opposed to Elves who take around 100 years to reach full maturity.
Thank you! Yes I cover a lot of other things as well and in a lot of detail. This is also just the first part of Who is Elrond. There are 8 more parts to this 😅: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YgQg_lZlnx0.html I think about 2 more parts are still missing ad will be produced soon 🤞.
This is long since published but I thought I'd add my 2 cents anyway. It's indeed hard to believe he could find no publisher for his mammoth works, and by today's standards, he's a literary god. At the real Bird and Baby in London, his writing group gathered from time to time, including CS Lewis. When Prof Tolkien started writing LOTR, CS Lewis' response was, "Not more f****** elves..." So I guess there were some people who didn't really enjoy ALL of his creations. The full list of "The Inklings" as they called themselves :the "regulars" of the group were included C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Owen Barfield, Charles Williams, Christopher Tolkien, Warren Lewis, Hugo Dyson, Lord David Cecil, Roger Lancelyn Green, Adam Fox, R. A. Havard, J. A. W. Bennett, and Nevill Coghill. There were also Raold Dahl, and it is said that Rudyard Kipling also attended in the very early days. This is very well done. Thank you!
I could go on about the amazing-ness of this video, but I'll ask a question instead: If you separated this one part into 4 x 30 minute videos, it would be more RU-vid algorithm happy ... some would say compliant ... and posting this 2 or 3 per week, in sequence, would work with the algorithm and you might see increases in views via timeline suggestions as well as notifications. In addition, to be at the level of Tolkien fan to sit and absorb 2 hours of continuous complexity, is rare. The average viewer will click away when it gets too much for them, but if this was cut into 4 or more in a series, it can be ingested in more reasonable spurts. Multiply this by the 4 coming hours, and you would have a 12 or 15 video series ... and become regular 2 per week content that would be very RU-vid algorithm happy, and happily satisfy regular viewers and new viewers. You dont need to go into detail answering, to keep it simple; Did you think of any of this while editing?
Yes thought of it and it would have been reasonable. But there are multiple reasons why I decided against that. My series videos (I have the book analysis and film differences series) on YT rarely got that popular view wise. It seems that my long videos are the most popular. I have one 75 minute video, that sits on 2.3 million views, while the most popular video of the series (episode one) has "only" 110k. It's not even close. There is episode 20 (a special) "Who is Glorfindel" also 110k, but it's not "marked" from the outside (title, thumbnail) as an episode. So it seems for my channel video series are not that popular. The question is why? I think a series is more for your core viewer base (subscribers) and my subscriber base is decent in size (and ofc awesome!), but not that big. So to give a video the potential to get really a lot of views, it needs to be suggested on YT. If people get episode 4 suggested a percentage of people might be hesitant to click on it though, because they maybe would want to start with episode 1 and to fond it they would need to search it -> not gonna happen when there is so much content. Only if somebody gives my content a chance or watches episode 4 it works, but that is only another percentage of people. So with a series I make a bunch of videos where only Episode 1 being suggested really has the potential for a lot of views (that is also why episode one in a series and maybe last episode always have most views). As a result this might be why my long videos works o well. In addition I think I build a reputation of the dude who makes the long videos and in this I'm kind of "unique" in the LotR Fellowship of Content creators. So it fits my "brand" or is my trademark, if that makes sense. In addition a 2 hour video on Elrond is also "unique" and in a time where every minute over 500 hours of videos get uploaded, you need to stick out. You are right it won't satisfy everyone and also some people say I won't watch 2 hours, but they think about it and its length (and that is worth a lot!), because 2 hour+ video essay are nothing everyone will do, because it's a ridiculous amount of work (months) and as you say uploading daily or weekly is king. But I can't upload daily or weekly, because my style and maybe the way I work is not compatible with that. But ofc my channel has a decent size and my videos are watched by tons of non subscribers. So they get recommended. And for some reason my old stuff gets recommended a lot (maybe due to the reasons above). I guess my topics are never outdated as long as LotR is popular. On top of all that I'm also not a reasonable person and a terrible business man. I do this because I love doing it. Algorithm or not, I do what I want. That is why I started YT in the first place. And I also wanted to make the longest and most detailed character study video I have ever done ^^ And you can just stop the video and come back to it later YT should usually save where you left off. Sorry for the long answer.
@@ThePhilosophersGames - Well, thats a heck of a lot more than I expected, lol. In the end, if what you do works, dont break it. " I do this because I love doing it. Algorithm or not, I do what I want." Thats all that matters. Its interesting; other YT creators in other fields (computer tech, short documentary subjects, lifestyle, Mr Beast, etc) see it a different way, length of each video and thought out frequency of upload is king for recommendations and subs, and you see the algorithm work in a different way for you. Know that theres a lot of us who will happily sit thru a 2 hour Elrond piece, as theres so much he was involved with and how he was intertwined with everyone elses story, we learn a heck of a lot more about the Middle Earth universe as a whole. Iv'e read the Silmarillion 2x's and this type of video brings that overwhelming amount of information to life. Thanks for that.
A fellow YT creator (far bigger channel) once said to me that creating "scarcity" is also a good thing for videos and the channel, esp. in the context of taking small breaks as creator. I think people vastly overestimate their knowledge of the "algorithm". Ofc uploading every day with an established user base will lead to your new video getting a certain amount of views and as a result being recommended. So uploading 5 videos/week or at least weekly will increase this effect. The more videos you input into the system, the more it has to recommend to potential interested viewers. So their assumption is right. But ofc if the upload of your video is "special" because people like your content but you don't upload that often, it can also work. Still looking at my Tolkien YT colleagues weekly high quality uploads lead to much more success. See Matt (Nerd of the Rings) one year ago he had like 4000-5000 subs, now he has more subs than men of the West and is the biggest lore channel. His success is ofc also well deserved, but he uploads videos every week and his videos are well done too. I must admit though his growth is abnormally good. Like Men of the West started making Tolkien content 2017 again I also uploaded my first Lore related video 2017. Took him over 4 years to get to 333k subs, Nerd of the Rings did it in just one year, that's really insane. And I only made it to 40k in 4 years 😅 So in this sense uploading weekly is for sure the better strategy. Though I must say to my defence, that I also see really good view numbers and esp. watch time, but people seem to absolutely hate the idea of subscribing to my channel 😭 haha happy you enjoy the videos and it seems there are enough people who love watching 1+ hour long videos ^^ sorry for the walls of texts, but I kind of rarely talk about YT stuff, but put some thought into it 😂
At 1:34 I see an error in your print indicating that Finarfin remained in Middle-earth yet took the Council of the Valar. I know you see the error as Finarfin stayed behind in Aman.
First of all thank you for the hint. Though I'm not 100% sure what you mean. Is the time code right? You mean in the text in the video? I would love to correct it for the all-in-one version and list it in the mistakes section
@@ThePhilosophersGames Let me go back as well. I stop the video a couple of times to return to it, finally getting out some reference though I know you've taught me well on that subject already. But just to confirm. But I may have noted the time stamp incorrectly. It is on the text sidebar of character highlights though.
@@ThePhilosophersGames Actually there was another text error earlier in video, I'll look it up to. Everything you are saying is correctly stated, as far as I know, it's just some printed items that are incorrect.
@@ThePhilosophersGames ok, @ 49:22 the typo is concerning Idril Celebrindal. Halfway down the text sidebar is written that she married Turgon and was mother to Eärendil. Of course she was married to Tuor. Since you are making corrections, I will keep a watch on the typos and make shorter notes on them. I haven't been able to keep up lately and know you've been notified by others possibly but encase they missed one, I'll pull up the rear guard for continuity sake.
@@ThePhilosophersGames you do amazing job on your videos, I've never seen anyone go so deep and back in past of the writer to tell the story of a character, I'm just baffled. Waiting for the part 2👍.
A very good question. I find the point or the idea very interesting that Ggil-galad made sacrifices for his alliance with Númenor that led to further conflict (Woods, Dunelding Dúnedain conflict and later Rohan, etc). Nothing is for free it seems and decisions have consequences. And considering that Elrond was a close advisor of him (also mentioning that he travelled the forests once when it was one big forest later "and many things wild and strange [he] knew"), this is also part of Elrond's story and the time Elrond lived in. I felt I have to put this quote/detail in context and it's a point that you maybe don't find in many other lore videos. Though I feel like I maybe was not able to bring this point across too well. We will have many excursions like this that I try to connect to Elrond in part 2 (which is why I think part 2 and 3 + will be the most interesting parts). E.g. we will look at Thranduil, Galadriel, etc too in a lot of detail, because they are import in a time when Elrond is important too. They are powers as and leaders and usually a world is not that isolated. We find small small text hints for that. One might argue that I over analyse things, but I think to understand a character and its functions one must understand also a bit the times he lived in.
