OK, so for the dating part - Ercole's Vespa appears to be a Vespa Rally 180, produced between 1968 and 1973. Knowing Ercole's... vain and self-centred nature, he most likely bought it as soon as it was available. From that, along with the credit shot of them watching the moon landing (they don't appear to have aged visibly, and it stands to reason that the credits would show what the kids were up to shortly after the movie, rather than several years after), I'd say the movie takes place in the summer of 1968, specifically the end of the summer, since Giulia has to leave to go back to her mother's and for school. Of course the shortcoming of this thinking is that pretty much every Vespa we see in the movie appears to be the exact same model, so they might have just used the one for inspiration/base... But hey, it's just a theory...

I’d have to actually do some research on it, but I heard that after the whole controversy happened, they cracked down on it and made sure all their counselors actually were accredited and now they monitor it much more closely, so with this new round of sponsorships (which was likely spurred on by losing a lot of business because of the controversy), they’ve made a point in the ad reads to assure that they are actually credible

Is there a region of the world that is monster-free? Monsters incorporated is probably only open from about 8am-5pm, and since time travel only works in set increments, when they go through the doors during normal working hours, there is only a certain region of the world that would be night time during those hours, right? That would mean if you grew up on the opposite side of the world, you might never have a monster purely because of scheduling issues… right? That would mean when Randall sneaks in after hours to keep scaring children, he has an additional advantage, because he would be able to scare kids in a region that is usually monster-free. Food for thought

More likely that they have multiple shifts to cover the full 24 hour day the same way businesses today that are open 24 hours do. Alternately, they have branches around the world that follow the clock. Monstropolis is probably in east Asia, somewhere.

Not every Disney character will have a monster. It's not connected to their story. It's true that Pixar has all movies connect in the same universe through cameos, but they don't have relevance to the plot. And there is no mentioning of her having a monster in her closet. The only monsters are the sea monsters Luca and Antonio.

It makes sense that the best monster to scare a kid would be similar to the local monster folklore. Also, I wonder if the monsters work in shifts, that the ones we are familiar with are for the US and a different shift of monsters are for Europe and so on. I might be wrong, and it was explained in Monsters Inc., but it sounds interesting to me.

It's been a while since I've seen the movie, but IIRC I think in that little montage scene they did Sully had done at least like 5 doors, however, 1 door does not always equal 1 kid, as we see in both Monsters Inc and Monsters University, there can be multiple kids behind the door if, for instance, it's some sort of Summer Camp or Slumber Party or something, and during Sully's training in Monsters Inc, Mike does have him scare "twins in a bunk bed" which means siblings that share a room would also count towards that. Pretty much any time they show the board with their score going up or show a different door in front of them would count. As far as making a video about it, I feel like that would be a relatively quick video, probably no more than a couple minutes long, so I don't think it's likely they would make a video about it, and besides that, it's near impossible to come up with an exact number for reasons mentioned above (ie Slumber Parties, Summer Camps, and Siblings that share a room).

I don’t think Luca takes place in 1958 because I’m the end credits there’s a picture of Luca and Giulia watching the moon landings on TV in 1969 and they look about the same age as in the movie so I think the movie takes place in 1968 maybe.

ok, i see this video but... what if we start looking for the funny monsters instead of the scary ones, we got a new show full of monsters (i havent seen it so idk how many new charactors) and also at some point in time they would have switched. i personally think luca takes place right on the cusp between laugh and scare becasu of the poster in the room in monsters inc and it matches with the this time of the luca. idk

This theory kinda invalidates the other theories of which monster was assigned to which kid. The timeline introduced here wouldn’t add up. What if the “1999” in the “FOUNTAIN OF KNOWLEDGE” was referring to the year of the human world in parallel to the monster world? Instead of 1999 being the year in the monster world. This would also help with the Pixar theory in general. The monsters would need to be way further in the future to have the events of Cars 1, 2, and 3, and Wall-E take place in between the fall of the humans and rise of the machines/monsters. Let me know if I misinterpreted anything or if I’m making sense here

Good theory except you got the time you said Luca takes place in wrong. In the credits it's shown Giulia and Luca are watching the moon landing which happened in 1969 and they still look like kids so the movie takes place in the 60s not the 50s.

Dose the fact that a movie can take years a few years before it is shown on TV move the time line. It may be 1960 or later being that Madonna Street was released in late June. In the late 50's U.S. movies did make deals to have a movie shown sooner after it has been released but MGM having trubles is difrent then the movie to TV debuts of Europe.

There is a very big flaw with this theory. At the end of Monsters Inc Randall was thrown into the door to be banished ends up at the run down camper that was in a bugs life which takes place in 1998. Well if Randall was sent to back 50 years ago than why does the camper looks like it hasn’t changed in 50 years. It fits better if the human world shares the same time/year. And in Monsters University which takes place in 1987 and when it shows the human close to being that time and not 1937.

Alberto did the exact pose we’ve seen Randal do CONSTANTLY, so I fully believe this. Kinda sad that Gulia was so friendly to Alberto and he gave her a whole ptsd flashback. The way she shouted “don’t hurt us ” while standing behind Luca makes so much more sense now. She didn’t even see Alberto she just saw Randal.

Giulia's reaction to Luca's reveal didn't scare her as much as Alberto's did, which I think is further evidence that she thought her monster was back, because Randall and Alberto's colour scheme is very similar.

@@katarinadreams6955 It would be interesting to see the theory for Hannah's monster, like she lives with Sid who is absolutely not nice to her, she freaks out when seeing that he has replaced her dolls head with that pterodactyl toy's for example so on one hand that's some fertile ground for potential monsters but on the other hand it's implied that this is a regular thing that Sid does, so maybe she doesn't actually get scared of actual monsters that much because she just assumes it's another lame joke from Sid.

Randal is the most obvious candidate: he's nimble and can climb on ceilings so Julia's tiny room is no match for him. He also resembles a sea monster, so it would make sense this sea-monster fearing town would be where he goes.

I’m not sure how much this affects anything but it’s more likely Luca was set in the 1960s rather than the 1950s because, and I’m not completely sure if the credits count as ‘canon’, in the credits Luca and Guilia watch the moon landing which was in 1969 and still look about the same age they were in the movie

That changes so many things if it’s canon that would mean Guilia would’ve been born in 1956 making her 8 in 1964 which is around 9 years after the events of monsters inc

I actually think they might be watching the “Man in Space" an episode of Disneyland which originally aired in 1955. It had a space walk animated segment and The rocket Luca is holding is almost exactly the one Walt holds in the show.

This theory is pretty good but As a Disney Parks geek I would like to point out that some of the ride posters in the movie are for rides that came out after Disneyland’s opening. Specifically the Matterhorn and the Submarine voyage ride posters pose a problem for this theory. Both of these opened in 1959 as part of the Tomorrowland expansion, 4 years after the parks opening. Also a poster for the storybook land canal boats ride can be found in a coffee shop in Monster World. So either the Monster World has it’s own Disneyland and the human world is currently set after 1959 or the Pixar team are just big Disney Park Geeks like me :)

Also.. in the end credits they are watching the moon landing of 1969, without looking much older. And a little European perspective: having built in closets where monsters could come from is super American. Europeans are more likely to have dressers and wardrobes with narrow doors instead of proper doors like shown in Monsters Inc. I assume the reason behind that is, the way houses were built: stone instead of wood and simple designs with straight walls.

@SomeoneOnlyWeKnow Really just a guess on my part, based on how long films that screened in theaters (as opposed to direct-to-tv movies) typically took to air in subsequent decades.

Of course, there was no VHS yet - a detail I completely overlooked - so perhaps they aired that much sooner.

@@jeng.2117 much later actually. Typically a film would air 5-10 years after being in theaters ( if not more). You see, without home versions, they'd re-release popular films every couple of years in theaters until the box office couldn't justify the distribution costs. It would take 2-5 cycles before they reached that point. That would make watching the Apollo 11 moon landing (August 1969) without looking much older much more realistic, as a 1958 movie airing on TV for the first time in 1968 would be normal. Heck even in the 70s and 80s when I grew up films could take a year or two to release on home media after a theatrical run. Television airings could still take 5 years or so, when studios judged most people who were going to buy a home copy had already done so.

So if Randal is Boo, Andy, and Guilia’s monster- wouldn’t that mean that all three of them would have to exist in the same time span? They would have to be grouped into the same years that Randal has been scaring before the events of Monsters Inc.

I'll make the argument that before her parents separated she had a much bigger room with a closet. Because her current room has no closet. the reason she has no closet is because her father saw the monster.

theory idea: as you said, luca and alberto wouldn’t have monsters since they are monsters, but what if their monsters are humans? multiple times throughout the film the sea monsters refer to humans as “land monsters” so what if there is an alternative universe where humans scare monsters?? this might be a stretch, but this is just a thought that came to my mind :)

Personally, the fact that Julia is practically immediately ok with Luca and Alberto being sea monsters - indicates that she’s not too afraid of monsters. I personally think we’re looking for a jokester. We don’t know many so far, but we’re definitely looking to the cast of monsters at work.

She was also quite afraid of Alberto when she first saw him monster out. I think she was scared by Randell in her past, initially thought Alberto was Randall, but was able to realize that was still Alberto and that Luca was also a sea monster once the initial shock wore off. And her door was shredded shortly after
