What If Petunia Was A Witch? | Harry Potter Film Theory 

This one thing would make a whole different story. As I understand, Petunia was close to Lily before she got her letter. I don't think that it was just the fact that Lily was different, but it seems that their parents rather doted on Lily after that and Petunia felt shunned. If they were both magical, there wouldn't have been that rift. I also think that Petunia would have more likely been in Ravenclaw.

I can just imagine Shape’s face when Dumbledore tells Snape that he needs to take care of Harry.

This whole thing feels really unfair to Petunia. Those 3 traits you mention so many times probably weren't always there. She was probably a very different person as a child, but all the extra love and attention Lily got as a result of being a witch really affected her; it started her on the path to becoming the bitter, jealous, horse faced b***h we know in the series. If she had been a witch, it would have been fairly obvious that Lily was one as well, especially after Petunia had her first year at Hogwarts. She would have come back that summer and it would have been HER with the pockets that were full of frog-spawn, turning teacups into rats. She would have told her little sister all about Hogwarts and they probably would have been the best of friends when Lily got there a few years later.

Petunia, in some ways, might end up a LOT like Percy Weasley.

Interesting point about how her love for family manifests in her treatment of Dudley. I personally think the reason she spoils him so much and constantly tells him how great he is is because she's compensating for feeling so ignored by and unimportant to her own parents compared to Lily. Her treatment of Dudley vs her treatment of Harry turns the Evans family dynamic on it's head.

I personally don’t think Petunia would develop an obscurus because unlike small children who usually develop this, she actually learned to control her magic already and regulate her emotions and their effects on her magic

I was really hoping this would end up with Harry getting raised by Snape. I also like the idea of Petunia, Lily, and Snape all playing together as kids.

I cannot even imagine Snape's face when Dumbledore reveals that fact to him! "Harry Potter must live with you." 🤣🤣🤣

On an unrelated note, what if the Malfoy's hadn't managed to avoid being locked up in Azkaban after Voldimort's first fall, and baby Draco got sent off to be raised by his closest non-incarcerated relatives: Aunt Andromeda Tonks and her family? What kind of person would Draco be, what house would he be sorted into, would he be friends with Harry, and how would the story go differently? I don't think I've seen this one done before, but if anyone else has feel free to let me know/post link.

I actually think Dumbledore would have tried to convince Petunia to stay with Snape, saying that they would all be safer sticking together.

You should definitely do a part two. Maybe you can even make a video series about everything from Scabious’ point of view. It would be interesting to see how Snape treats Scabious and how Scabious feels about Harry

If Petunia was magical then wouldn't there be more changes for chamber of secrets? Her being magical would hide Harry's underage magic. Maybe Vernon still gets to make his deal cause no owl shows up but the bars still go on the window as punishment.

7:54 age could influence this being friends / at least knowing Snape from childhood, being older she could protect him when she sees the marauders bullying him, maybe giving him some extra spells to deal with them, that he then writes into the potions book. This could also make him fall in love with her and not lily.

We definitely need a part 2 of this. This is great. Vernon being unable to have a magical child totally fits my idea of how genetics work in Harry Potter.

All of those things that make Petunia less likeable could have been traits she developed as she became more bitter. Prior to that, all we know is that Lily and Petunia got along well and were close, playing happily together and initially when he approches them she and Lily back each other up in repelling his attempts to talk to them. Given that we know that Lily is kind and not afraid to stand up to those she cares about when she disagrees with them, even from a young age, and that Petunia has a lot of deep and loving feelings as (well as some bad behaviours and a lot of bitterness and hate) in later life, it’s hard to believe that Petunia and Lily would be so close as children if Petunia was especially mean or selfish in her interactions with others prior to Lily being singled out to go to Hogwarts while she had to stay at home. I don’t think that Petunia would be a Slytherin. Hufflepuff is a reasonable fit for someone who wants to fit in and be respectable; but she’d also make a good fit for Gryffindor After all, she took Harry in even knowing how dangerous association with the wizarding world in general, and Harry in particular, could be for not only herself but her young family too; and she did it anyway, standing up to Vernon when he tries to throw Harry out, and placing her trust in the wizards who organise the family’s protection after Harry leaves home much more easily than Vernon does. So she’s got a very brave core even if there are some less-than-noble impulses she develops after being disappointed and disconnected from her sister. I think sharing the journey of growing up as a witch with her sister, the privilege of going to Hogwarts, and the power balance between the two sisters being slightly less stacked against her as she’s the older, more experienced witch who would be guiding her sister through the process (rather than realising that no matter how hard she tried she’d never be as powerful as her *younger* sister) would have enabled her to grow up as a brave, capable witch and she’d probably have joined the Order of the Phoenix as a young single woman because she’s naturally more sensible and less rebellious than Lily so whilst she’d have wanted to do the right thing and help the cause (and of course to be respected for doing so), she’d be much less romantic and impulsive than Lily so she wouldn’t have married young - she married Vernon to be able to leave home, demonstrate her utter “normalness” and probably to prevent Lily beating her to yet another milestone due to Lily having more power, but Petunia being a witch herself would make all of those things unnecessary so she probably wouldn’t have married young.

One problem: Sirius knows where Wormtail is. So when Harry brings up the burrow, Sirius won't just go in there without a plan. And getting away from Privet Drive should give them enough time to get over the rough course of events. (James, Wormtail and Sirius are Animagi. Sirius suggest Wormtail as secret keeper, who betrays the trust and Sirius tries to get revenge but in turn gets framed.)

I would think after Harry shows Scab kindness, Snape would realize his unwarranted hatred for him as he is nothing like his father in that way. And the relationship would mend.

I imagine Scabious saying stuff like "Wait until my father hears about this!" more to mock Malfoy than anything, specially after living with and befriending Harry, mainly cuz Lucius almost never anything, while Snape is literally, well, SNAPE. But seriously, Snape would NEVER let anyone bully his son.

Feel like these guys are getting better at their What If's. Not necessarily being accurate but certainly writing an entertaining story.

I need a part 2 of this. I love the idea of Snape raising Harry. It's literally one of my favorite fanfic plots to read.

Petunia is no Slytherin. She’s not cunning or ambitious. She lets Vernon do all the work to support the family. She’s obviously not a Ravenclaw. She could be a Puff. She is deeply loyal to her dead sister. She accepted Harry for no other reason than to keep her nephew safe. She could even be a Gryffindor. She continued to allow Harry to stay in Book 5 after realizing Voldemort is back and they could all be targets. That takes balls.

I disagree that petunia would be in slytherin. If you disregard how she treats Harry and look at the others in her household she is very loyal and patient with Vernon/Dudley. Especially to how she responds when Vernon's employers come over. I would say she’s more of a Hufflepuff.

We need the most powerful What If of all: What if the Next Generation actually had a decent story? Would love one of these after the whole Harry in Slytherin one. Like, what if Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy and Rose Granger-Weasley were in a story that was good and made sense?

That whole "harry your aunt had a wizard for a husband, your cousin is scabious snape" feels like such a harry potter twist i would absolutely believe that kind of set up and delivery.

I feel like the only reason petunia has slytherin traits is because she was resentful toward lily after she found out she was a witch, but without all that anger, we don’t know that much about petunia, so I disagree with her being in slytherin.

I love how you always manage to make sirius meet with harry in the beggining of the third year and explain his innocence... and also you always make dumbledore explain some secrets way earlier

The thought of Petunia being a witch made me immediatly think of Littlefinger and the Tully sisters. I think that would be the dynamic of Snape, Lily and Petunia

Actually, not entirely sure Harry survives in this scenario. Originally, Lily's sacrifice works because Voldemort offers her to step aside, which she refuses, and *opts* to die. Voldemort only makes this offer (sort of), because Snape asked him to spare Lily, as she was the one he loved. Without that, he would have probably just killed her like James (and everyone else), hence, no sacrificial protection. I guess, it is more likely that Snape still requests this favor from Voldy, but can't be entirely sure.

What if Dudley was a wizard? How would Petunia and Vernon react? How would it affect Harry? Also, please do more VS videos (Elsa VS Pepa, etc). Maybe Maui VS Camillo? Rapunzel VS Juiletta (spelling?)

One small addition, When Petunia renounced magic, she would have voluntarily snapped her own wand. This wouldn't have changed anything that you said.

I mean, you did mention in another video that he had two choices and Harry just happened to be the "chosen" one. That would make interesting book titles though. Neville Longbottom and The Sorcerer's Stone, Neville Longbottom and The Chamber of Secrets, ect.

I've always assumed that Lilly's talent in potions might have been partially from Severus helping her as just a general side effect of their friendship. If the two of them aren't as close and his help was what pushed her ahead, then she might not have been noticed by Slughorn. (That said, she likely would have developed more advanced talents in other areas. Not saying Severus was COMPLETELY responsible for her doing well in potions, just that his affinity for it caused and helped her to focus more of her own intelligence on it. However, it was more likely than any other subject to get her noticed by Slughorn since it was his subject.)

I would love a part two for this! Also, this version makes Petunia so much more tragic and likeable.

Id love to see a part 2 of this with the ripple effects this has on Snape as the story progresses. It would be extremely clear he's not helping voldemort if he continued to protect harry while they live together.

Absolutely love this theory - it has seriously made me want to start writing a fic where Petunia is a witch. However, I do have some questions you seemed to have glossed over: 1. Does Petunia leave Snape and Scabious and the magical world the very night that her sister dies? It's only the next night that Harry is delivered to her. Does Dumbledore show up at her hotel room? I would imagine that Dumbledore would speak with her in person because he knows her. 2. When Harry receives his letter, assuming Petunia would try to play dumb, she would let the events unfold as they did in the book. Meaning, Vernon still takes them to that little shack on the island and Hagrid still comes. Would not he recognize Petunia as a witch? He might not have been close with her but he was friends with Lily and would have known Petunia at Hogwarts. I can just imagine him spilling the beans, not knowing that Petunia had forsaken all things magical. 3. Petunia as an obscurus? While I love the drama of it, I thought those only happened in children who knew they were magical but suppressed their magical abilities. That's why Credence was so rare and amazing - he was the first person to ever have an obscurus and live into double digits.

Honestly when you think about it that way maybe she was trying to protect Harry in her own way. She knew that being magical got her sister killed so she was doing everything possible to stop Harry from discovering his magical talents, she may even have been encouraged by the fact that Harry never starts floating objects like her sister. She also hides him in the cupboard under the stairs because she knows someone is still looking to kill him and wants to give him as small a profile as possible.

This is the second what if that seems to forget the Weasleys are in Egypt when Harry gets on the knight by bus.

I would love a part two. And, no matter the version, Dumbledore had way too much power and too many rights when it came to Harry. Honestly, in the real world Dumbledore would be guilty of child abuse, child endangerment, aiding the delinquency of multiple minors (Hagrid, the Marauders, Harry and friends), and basically conspiracy to commit murder, meaning Harry.

About the whole Slytherin Muggleborn thing, I honestly believe that Petunia would just lie. Saying her father was a Muggle and her mother was a witch and that Lily was her half-sister, and not full. Simply because she would want to hold onto any popularity she had, even if it meant defying herself. Which would create a big rift between her and Lily, especially after Snape.

I think if Harry was to live with Snape, Dumbledore would show himself to be a huge **** and would tryly raise Harry as a pig for slaughter. He knows that Snape despised James and also knows that Snape is already acting on that hatred. He also knows that Snape was the one that essentially handed his parents over to Voldemort. How insanely insensitive would it be to then send Harry to live with him! Harry could just continue living with Dudley as he has his mother’s blood in him still, but handing him over to Harry’s second worst enemy and betrayer is not it. At ‘worst’ Harry could be a full time student at Hogwarts.

I must say that I am very intrigued by this! Definitely want to hear more!

Imagine, Scabious eventually gathering courage enough to ask Harry about his mother, Petunia, and Harry awkwardly trying to say something good about her, cuz he knows what it's like to not know about your parents, but at same time, he has to consider the fact that Petunia was just an awful person. There, you can make a parallel about his own father, James, later being revealed as a bully. Also, imagine Harry telling Scabious that he has a half-brother, Dudley. Or Harry subconsciously comparing Snape and Scabious to Petunia and Dudley.

There's also the, frankly bizzare, contention out there that Lily was the most talented in potions. When Snape was the actual top of their class. People who assume it's Lily don't understand what they're reading. Slughorn fawns over Lily sure, but his whole character is literally about making catastrophically bad judgements about his students. He is easily flattered by Tom riddle into giving him Horcrux info, because he's a rising star and teacher's pet so what's the harm right? Snape Is very intelligent, but poor and too lower class to merit Slughorn's favor and so is overlooked. Lily is a muggleborn with decent potions acumen because she knows Snape, and Slughorn is just astounded that a muggleborn can walk and chew gum at the same time so she qualifies for the Slugclub. And it doesn't stop there, Slughorn thinks Harry is a potions genius because of heredity and good breeding, when he's getting the genius potions tips from the same source his mother got them, Snape. Book 6 is trying to tell us this the whole time.

I would love to see a theory of if their places had been exchanged, that Lily had been without magic and Petunia been the witch

I find it so funny that I'm not a fan of Harry Potter literally at all. I've never purposely sat down to watch the movies and I haven't read a single page of the books, but I LOVE watching these Harry Potter theory videos from you guys.
