This video has made me feel 100 times better about how lacklustre the reveal was. I really wanted a flashback type montage showing all the areas that Buckells had been working in the background under AC-12's noses and you've given me that now. Thank you so much for the video and for being clued in enough not to fall for Buckells' Clark Kent.

I've got another random theory. What if it's Chief Inspector Osborne, the former boss of Steve Arnott from Counter terrorism from season1 (played by the actor who also played the masted of castle black in GoT). He's on the older side, plus he was on friendly terms with Hilton. But more importantly, it would be a narrative full circle moment that Arnott would go against his former boss one final time, since he lost against him in the failed raid case. It might be a bit of a stretch because we haven't really seen him since season 1, but who knows. I would just love Owen Teale to play the antagonist, he is so good in these roles.

Maybe the real H was the friends we made along the way

I think H is Chief Inspector Philip Osborne. The first bent cop we see in the show. Steve's commanding officer in counter terrorism. Trying to force him to lie about the death of an innocent man. Makes sense, if only he isn't in the rest of the series much.

So glad to finally find a content creator who covers line of duty. Really enjoyed this video and this is probably the best theory around H I've heard so far

Great great points, Buckles definitely fits the MO for the classic whodunnit perp as someone always present but in the background enough to not draw suspicion to the audience. I think he'd be a great choice for Jed to go with for H.

I've just watched this in anticipation of tonight's first episode of season 6 and it's so plausible. buckles would be perfect. Hope I've forgotten this by episode 4 though!

Buckells was one of my three guesses, alongside Osborne (who is my favourite for the top man- high rank, old, hidden in plain sight forcing arnott to lie, in jed mercurios tv lessons he mentions something about circular endings/structure and arnott vs Osborne seems big), and finally Morton although I don’t think it would be as impactful if it was him. I love this buckells idea as not a lot happened for me in s4

Nailed it! And Buckley being the "fourth man" fits as well. But Hilton was the most important of the four and definitely had connections with the "top man" or the highest levels of corruption- hence why his "suicide" forced AC12 to wrap things up. Contrast this with Dot or Biggaloe- those two opened up whole new territories for AC12.

I think It’s Philip Osborne from Season 1. It’s a stretch but it wud explain y he wanted to cover up an honest mistake

Been thinking the same thing. Could be the reason why it took so long for the armed response units to arrive when Dot made his escape after an AC-12 Interview. He was friendly with Hilton, Arnott having a wiretap on him to try and get something out of Osborne failed but Osborne said nothin and it failed. It was like this was meant to head somewhere? It’s been forgotten about from season 3 to 5 but as I said, there could’ve been strings pulled in each of those seasons that we haven’t made connections with yet. Season 1 his Fahrenheit order was irregular and it turned out to be the wrong number on the door. Hastings did the same thing in season 5 and was heavily criticised for it. Owen Teale in a villain role is amazing though, his character was evil in Game of Thrones and he made you really hate him. So, hopefully he returns in the next season or two. Just like how Hargeaves had a flare of questionable actions in season 2 which then led on to him being actually a member of the OCG.

Amazed no one seems to have commented on Tommy’s golfing partner seen extremely briefly at the climax of series 1, he’s there for a reason and the brief frame or 2 answers this question. Hindsight is a wonderful thing! However it was noticed at the time because I saw series 4 then five and looked out for series 1-3 afterwards, then watched 4&5 again. Also in my opinion LOD peaked in series 2, Keeley Hawes nailed that character and I was so glad she returned for S3.

A few series 1 clips make Buckles being H very plausible. More on board with it now having watched this.

I just watched another theory video right before yours and pointed out when Dot was blinking in response to Kate, he blinked at 'I' but then Kate immediately shifted it back to 'H' in the moment and that has seemingly never been questioned. Dot could have been trying to spell Buckles' name or trying to indicate their rank if indeed he did mean 'I'. I also agree it needs to be someone we know, if they have it be a random new character, there is no weight to it. Might be a bit of a leap for it to be a bumbling inspector but they have had us make some leaps already and it could be further supported by him still remaining at Inspector rank all this time, he may have purposefully stayed at that rank because he knows he is mid level - high enough to manipulate lower ranks and low enough to not have every little thing he does scrutinised.

A total left field suggestion but I like the PCC for H as he would be able to appoint the Chief Constable and set Force policy. Also Gil Bigelow was the PCC's Legal Counsel.

I think next season is going to bring a lot of season 1 ties with Ryan most likely joining a AC unit and Osbornes storyline still needs to be finished as he was basically openly corrupt as well as Morton.

Love the show and your theory on Buckles. One thing I picked up on last night was that, as we know Dots nom de guerre was "The Caddy": an obvious reference to Golf. Last nights episode in DCI Anderson's station we see Buckles practicing with a golf club in his office for several seconds in the background. Perhaps just a coincidence or is it one of those subtle hints that make us love Line of Duty do much. Thoughts?

I think it’s Chief Constable Osborne. I believe he is for many reasons but for a couple reasons, he was the first copper in the series to be shown as bent, with the cover up of the Karin Ali death. Also like you said ‘H’ had the power to start the collusion with organised crime, just like how he had the power to quickly rise the ranks from Chief Inspector to Chief Constable through the whole series.

At the end of Series 5, Ryan is shown to have joined the police. To do so he would have had to give DNA and finger print samples. Seems like there's a fair chance that he would have left DNA or a fingerprint at Kingsgate Printing Services as they had to clear out quickly. This could out him as a member of the OCG?

Dramatically it totally makes sense. I can really see Buckells fitting the bill as an unassuming bloke hiding in plain sight. In terms of believably fitting the plot it's very difficult imo. The biggest reason is age. Buckells is maybe 40 in 2020, perhaps slightly older. Realistically he's younger than Dot. The OCG dates back to at least the mid 90s, he'd have to be 15ish at that point. Buckells is totally believable as another Dot. As the OG/big bad I'm unconvinced. He's just not old enough. Of course, the big bad doesn't have to be someone in the police...

Has anyone considered that the whole story was wrapped up in series one and everything since has been a wild goose chase. We believe Tommy Hunter was killed in series 2 on Dot's orders BUT the person who was killed was heavily wrapped in bandages and unrecognisable. What if he didn't die? What if Tony Gates solved the case right at the very beginning and AC-12 have been chasing a phantom. It's got to be worth a thought
