This video explores the abilities, powers, and origin of the Marvel Comics character "Conan the Barbarian." From being the creation of the real world author Robert E. Howard in 1932, his birth on the battlefield of his homeland of Cimmeria, living in Hyborian Age around 10,000 B.C. with his father Corin, being trained in combat by his highly respected grandfather Drogin, quickly standing out as far stronger and more skilled than most other humans, passing many tough tests like his Rite of Passage while he was just a child, becoming the champion of his people and the King of Aquilonia after leading the charge to victory at the Battle of Venarium, having multiple children including Conn who would eventually become king after his father, his history with various publishers placing him in crossover comics with superheroes from Thor and Wolverine to Wonder Woman and He-Man, to his demise and epic adventures seemingly never having an end; Let's take a look at this classic superhero that appears in Marvel Comics, and one of the most powerful warriors of ancient days. This includes a short, canon character biography and my own opinionated "Sage Rating," which I use to give ratings of comic book and science fiction characters.

I, actually, may have underestimated his strength. He was was reportedly as strong as 20 alpha men from the Hyborian Age. The strongest modern men can deadlift around 1200-1500lbs, yet are weaker than those ancient "cave men!" 🤓 I calculated using modern men's standards. 👍

I can't recall Conan ever saying that, except in the 1982 movie where Conan for some reason end up with the backstory of king Kull who lived many generations before Conan. They are similar, both barbarians with awesome strenght, stamina and will power who eventually become kings, but there is some differences, Conan basically always stayed a cheerful dude while Kull turned into a dark and brooding figure from the responsibility of the crown.

He Did Not lift twelve tons, or have superhuman senses. He was just the product of a life of constant hardship, physical rigor, and top flight martial training. Born on a battlefield, and life spent on a battlefield. The natural man, a barbarian. No mutant or demi god.

About the only thing "supernatural" would be the belief that all Cimmerians are given the strength to slay by Crom, which is his one gift to his people, and will give nothing else. This is probably just a belief, and not actual fact. Conan himself was just the very peak of what a human can be, a one in a billion, blessed with natural strength, speed and endurance. He was not superhuman (though in the Dale Rippke and Sprague de Campe novels they could argue that he had an almost inhuman will), but was just the very best at pretty much everything.

Jack Wilson , right jack. I'm an authority on the entire volumes 1 to 10. And never did Robert E. Howard write any time that Conan could lift even one ton. He could life 900 to 1100 pounds, which is more than any man today can do. But since he's a fantasy adventure hero, we are only required to enjoy his exploits.

Conan could also be goofy as hell, once he thought the kings guard were out to capture him. Unfortunately, he was so damn drunk in some dank saloon/inn that in his effort to escape he ran straight into a brick wall and knocked himself out. The guards then scooped his big ass up and took him in.

Actually, Marvel and Dark Horse paid Robert E Howard's estate owners for the right to make those comics. And while the stories themselves are public domain, people using the character can't call him Conan, because the name is trademarked, and trademark never expires.

I have this scene saved in a playlist. My favorite movie, i grew up watching it. His father believed the secret of steel was the sword but he was wrong, the movie shows that everything he said in his opening dialogue was wrong. Thulsa believed the secret of steel was flesh, for it wields the sword. Conan proves him wrong when he chops off his head with his fathers broken sword. The truth is that it is the indomitable will of the warrior, who commands both flesh and steel to defeat his enemies. This is shown in the final scene when he holds the broken sword in one hand and Thulsa's head in the other. Great fucking movie.

I have both soundtracks in a special soundtrack I use for my gaming groups. The original quote is better. I wish the RED NAILS full lenght Cartoon movie would have came out, r rated and Ron Pearlman doing his voice.. all done and canned because of Jason M flop (which was ok, not great). Hope it gets released someday.

Frank Frazetta's work for the Conan Novels was incredible and Barry Windsor Smith's work on the original Marvel comic run in the early 70's was amazing. But I guess the main imagery for most would be that provided by John Buscema.

I have all of the Conan books written by Robert E Howard, and Almuric is a absolute classic, although in the Conan books his description of people of other races other than white made me feel very uncomfortable. But having said that I can't resist reading these books from time to time, and have been doing so since I first came across him at the age of 11. An incredible writer of fiction, and for me one of the greatest.

The big screen adaptations of the Conan character are the most remembered, it is really cool that both Marvel and you New Sage remind us that there is a comic book for the character. To me the Conan comic books are just fun, butt kicking action movie like books; needless to say you make the comic sound even more interesting and fun. it is generally accepted that Conan matches the height and size of another character he wrote Cormac Fitzgeoffrey... who was about 6'2 215 or so pounds. Which would be a monster for someone written in the 1930s. He also was not crazy body builder sized. This actually is one of the very few things the 2012 Conan movie got right. Jason Mamoa was closer to Conan's size and build (though far from ethnicticity, Cimmerians are Proto-celts).

I mean, if Marvel would make a comics/movie adaptation of Lord of the Rings, I think calling it "Marvel's Middle Earth" would be close to declaration of war to any Tolkien fans - and I would agree with them. I must say, I am not at all a fan of merging Conan into MCU. It is simply different universe, created by R.E.Howard (and as such, Marvel just cant bend its rules to their multiverse, such as turning gods and demons of R.E.Howard into alter-ego of servants of their deities - example being Hyborian god Mitra as MCU being Mithra... I mean WTF? Its like saing that Tolkien's Melkor will later be reincarnated as Thanos.) I have no problem with fan-fiction (many of them can be actually considerably good). But treating Conan in MCU as canon lore feels to me almost like a sacrilege of R.E.Howard's legacy

The original lore says he was "born on a battlefield" but the first actual story about a younger Conan that was published was when he was in his late teens, it was called "Frost Giant's Daughter." The Original works were not chronological, and they bounced around his life.

Great video bro. I'm a huge Conan fan, and you did a good job here.Marvel took REH's character and Frank Frezetta's image and made something unique in the comic world. The SCI FI and Fantasy boom of the 70's helped as well, as people began to reread the old pulps of the 30's and re-imagine them with more modern sensibilities. Mostly to the abilities of writer Roy Thomas and the art of John Buscema.I look forward to Marvel's new run, the first issue was amazing. Conan is back home at Marvel where he belongs! Just one thing I noticed the image on the left at 6:27 on your video is not Conan. That is Dark Wolf from the Fire and Ice animation made by Frank and Ralph Bakshi. I see in the comments the super-human vs human abilities. You are going by an amalgam of Marvel lore. I get it, so cool. I learned some stuff, so thanks. However... I AM a huge Frank Frazetta fan, even teaching my students his influence on art today. ESPECIALLY the visual we know today as Conan. Before Frazetta started doing the art, Conan (and the scenes) were done up to look like Rome. Frazetta was like, "Nope!" He painted what we know Conan as today, even influencing Conan's actual backstory with the authors. The man is a LEGEND. Just thought I would share for those interested in this amazing man. I would have given him a 10.I know he is not a superhero by today standards,but he is a legendary character that was created more than 80 years ago.I remember I had this beautiful book that had black and white artwork of Conan fighting monsters,wizards,sorceress,and beautiful naked women. I had a Conan game that I played on the 360 and one of my favorite games I have right now is Conan:Exiles.

Conan the war Jesus. I loved his leadership as a King. One of his comics. Palintides and another person tried to bow down to him coming home to his Kingdom. He was instantly angry saying he would rather have them stand by his side than kneel at his feet.

@BadPeople1100 Pulp characters from the 30s would often be considered Mary/Gary Sues today, but they worked within how they were told. Conan never really met the same characters in any of the original works, and they were all essentially self contained stories. So it worked to have a guy who was stronger, faster, tougher, smarter and better than everyone around him. Plus he was the "first" which also makes it much easier to sell. Same goes for alot of Superheroes today. Batman and Superman would not work at all if you tried to create them today.. they work because they are the ones who started the trope, and are above it. Conan is the same way... when they create characters like him now its usually satirical.

@BadPeople1100 at least you know where the term comes from. The modern intepretation of what a Mary Sue is today, is not necessarily someone who breaks the rules of their own universe, but one that is a "special snowflake" in their own world. Conan has no flaws, but he is a flawed character, which saves him. But he is stronger than almost everyone, he is smarter than almost everyone, he is faster, tougher, with more willpower and can do things that no one else in any of his stories can really match. He has traveled farther, experienced more, and is more knowledgeble than virtually anyone around him. Very rarely does he say that someone is "better than him" at something (one of the few exceptions if the Picts, he knows he cannot match their woodcraft.). he has many gary stu properties, and if you created a character like that today, it would be lambasted and shot down faster than you can say "Rey is to powerful." He works within his genre, because he essentially made that genre what it is today.

The Robert E Howard novels/books were the best. The comics were okay but if you really want to know the real Conan you have to read the books. Like all great writers, Howard was able to take you to another place and time. You could see everything he portrayed in the books in your mind. I would often read for hours and be in a trance of sorts, not even realizing I had been reading for 2-3 hours. That is how great these books are. Good video!

howard's books oozed atmosphere. They made you feel. He was not the best author when it came to sentence structure or the words he used, but his writing had passion and was raw and violent, much like the Character of Conan himself.

Conan was one my favorite graphic novels back in the day. The book store in my area closed down and I missed out on volumes (I was too young to drive). One of the last issues I remembered was of one hinting that he was the descendant of the Atlantean king, Kull The Conqueror. I've no clue how that panned out Lol

Love the fact that you made Conan the topic of your video!!! But from all the R.E.H. novellas and Roy Thomas comics that I have and read Conan's only "super power" was his willpower. I don't remember anytime he lifted tons of anything. Side note: Conan was always MY hero. I couldn't even buy the savage sword comics for a time because they were sold behind the glass counter next to Heavy Metal and porn

J.Buscema was and is the greatest artist that marvel has ever had. I believe...Barry Windsor Smith was great after Conan when he did weapon X and other projects but I'm drunk and rambling. Used to have a monthly subscription to King Conan and Red Sonja. Reading Robert E. Howard inspired me to write. Majored in creative writing and commercial art in high school. Thanks for this. Never heard his origin story and I read all of Howard's books. Also read Kull the Conqueror too. Really appreciated it.

Conan "Throat-Slitter" was a rogue, a pirate, a thief, a mercenary, a general, a god slayer, a womanizer, a savage, a merchant, a barbarian, a drunk... Reading of his exploits in Savage Sword and Conan Saga were a highlight of my younger years. Together with SGT Rock comics, Conan fired my imagination for adventure and exploration. As an adult I can see how Howard used this character, Kull, and Solomon Kane to live out his inner turmoil and fight his "demons". It is a tragedy he took his life so young. +EDIT+ Great video- really brings back some memories

When you consider all of Conan’s feats throughout his varied continuities before coming to 616, he’s very likely the greatest fighter in the entire Marvel universe by a significant margin. The man has ripped literal gods apart with his bare hands, and that’s a pretty baseline feat for this guy

Phoenix on the Sword was published in 1932 by Weird Tales. Not 39 in 39 reh had been dead for 3 years and had moved from heroic fantasy (the genre he created) to mostly westerns before that tragedy. In the reh stories he had no superhuman anything. The only book length story written by reh about Conan was the serial hour of the dragon. Conan's physical profile more closely firs Captain America from the 80s Marvel handbook: peak human.

Yup, as far as Marvel they are. Kull was an ancestor of Conan's and RS is from the Hyborean age as well. Kull and Conan are related in the Novels as well, but RS was a completely different heroine from the 16th century, Red Sonya of Rogatino, fist appearing in the story Shadow of The Vulture.

Red Sonja is an adapted character, who is basically an actual creation of Marvel Comics. It is one of the reasons why Conan and Red Sonja did not appear side by side in the terribad Red Sonja film (that starred Arnold, just not as Conan.)

Conan is no super human. He is just as badass as any human being can get. All his strength and abilities is gained from a life of battle. I paused and awaited the rating....because Conan is no ordinary man. I dont care who u are, if u meet this man on the battle field pray he is on ur side. If u have enhanced healing this man will find pleasure in putting it to the test over and over and make it more gruesome each time. He will more likely consider it sorcery...and he hates sorcerers
