1:10 "the developers have clearly included the moons into her character" _Proceeds to circle every little moon there is but the giant and obvious moon-like dagger that makes a quarter of the image_
In the orphic hymns Melinoe and Hecate were referred to by the same adjective ''κροκόπεπλος'' (wearing a yellow veil) as if they were the same person and some theorise that Melinoe is a surname to Hecate.Considering in the trailer Hecate has her features concealed and the plot suggests some time shenanigans it's possible that Hecate is an older version of Melinoe.
That's so interesting! Because Zagreus was also associated with and possibly was another version of a different god (Dionysus, as pointed out in the game, but some believed that Zag was also just another form of Hades). I guess "potentially being another version of a different god" runs in the family.
@@OctopusLady in the first game the do reference that. You can get some dialog with Dionysus, where him and zag joke to Orpheus that Dionysus is revived zag, and Orpheus believes it, even after zag tries to explain that it was a jokr
@@SomeoneTookMyOldName yes! I worded that kind of funny in my comment (I probably should have said something like, "Zag was possibly another version of Dionysus, which the game pointed out") but yeah, I completely LOST IT when I saw that convo between Zag and Dio in the game. And I just realized that the game also kinda acknowledges that Zagreus was also believed to be another version of Hades, with how Poseidon always called him "Little Hades!" God, I am constantly impressed with the amount of research Supergiant Games put into Hades I. Hades II is gonna be AMAZING.
I think the reason one of the reasons melinoe is being represented as the daughter of hades is because in the Orphic tradition which is what we know of her from, Zeus and hades are often synchronized/ considered the same god ( this may mean that in the lost Hellenistic view she just might be the daughter of hades like Zagreus seemingly was)
@@someplant5971 The Wikipedia page for Melinoë cites three different authors for the Zeus/Hades syncretism theory. Timothy Gantz ("Early Greek Myth"), Andrzej Wypustek ("Images of Eternal Beauty in Funerary Verse Inscriptions of the Hellenistic Period"), and David Hillman ("Hermaphrodites, Gynomorphs and Jesus: She-male Gods and the roots of Christianity", with apologies to any trans folks who might take offense to that title)
Speaking of obscure gods, I gushed when I saw Moros in the trailer. He doesn't get nearly as much attention as his siblings, so it's nice to see more of him.
Yes yes yes. I love the idea of supergiant bringing more obscure gods to the forefront. I’m extreemely excited to see what they do with this minor goddess and how she ties with the events of Hades.
Fun fact the text comes from a group that also saw Zeus and Hades as the same god This group also saw Zag as the first Dionysus before his death and rebirth
Bro got me all excited at the start thinking I could find out some new myths about melinoë, because unsurprisingly, I’ve never REALLY heard of myths about her. I was all excited because I’ve pretty much run out of myths to be obsessed with… soo
I wonder if we might end up meeting Erebus in Hades 2. He's Nyx's husband/brother (which one they'll want to take is up to them) and out of the primordials he's easily the least explored of in fictional media
It's also possible to have a trilogy cause then Hades' children have 3 which is Zag, Melinoe, and Makaria/Macaria. I really do hope Macaria will show up, but wonder how would her story play out.
Considering the game is in early access, I played a bunch of the beginning You're mostly on point, Hecate IS the Witch character & Melinoe DOES have a connection to the moon/Selene Well done Jake!
This is interesting because when I first saw her I assumed she was an Empousa. The single metallic leg and working for Hecate both support this. Maybe they're combining the ideas together
So after killing Osiris, Set (Osiris' brother) is all set to be king. Isis brings Osiris back long enough to conceive Horus. Horus grows up and decides to assert his claim to the throne. Set assaults Horus, and Mediterranean power-dynamics are all aboot who has ejaculated inside whom, so Horus is now less fit than Set to be king. Horus then secretly "Seasons" Set's salad to even the score. Since both of them have had their semen inside the other it was declared a wash so they'd have to come up with a new contest: They'd race boats made of stone. Horus wins by cheating: He paints a wooden boat to look stone, and as such he wins.
Nord myths may have been done over and over again but I'd still go for it, but also imagine if they did what ifs, So To aru Majutsu no Index Othinus is a female character but in NT10 she says how mortals imagine her as an Old man with a Beard etc or so. So what if they had Odin just be Othinus etc... Female Thor etc... eh kek
Thank you RU-vid Algorithm for randomly putting this on my feed. Watched a couple more of your videos after this and dropped a sub. Your videos are informative and you manage to get those information across in a quick, entertaining way.
id be really curious to hear your take on modern adaptations of greek mythology and how you *PERSONALLY* would adapt greek mythology into your own creative work. do you prefer accuracy or entertainment value? do you have a favorite adaptation? (btw im not trying to ask what people SHOULD do just what you would want to see.) thank you! love your work and videos
Zeus and Hades were considered by the Orphics (the main source we have for Melinoe) two aspects of the same god, by assuming the Guise of Hades it was meant he had become Hades literally
I wonder if Asteria is gonna be mentioned in any way or have a role in this game with how, if that really is, Hecate playing a bigger role in this game.
I was looking into her story a bit and it seems that Zeus and Hades at some points/regions in Greek history were considered the same god but split thus resulting in this confusion between who's daughter she was. Interesting if accurate
I have some stories you could possibly talk or animate about: -Theseus and the Minotaur -Arachne -Idunn and her apples, which tell us how the aesir stay young
As someone who really likes greek mythology but also doesn't read much about the obscure stuff, I LOVE how Supergiant can bring it into light and how they portray the characters
I recently talk to the developers, they actually make their games so Jacob will have stuff to talk about. They just don’t wanna see him go hungry the poor little guy
Can you do a video talking about all the stuff in the original game, oh and one talking about creatures from greek mythology or maybe just the gods pets.
They might do another thing where they reference it in in-game dialog, like how Zagreus and Dionysus are sometimes the same being but in the game it's an elaborate prank on humanity by the two gods
ok but I’m excited for Hades III where we finally get the most obscure cthonic goddess of all time as a protagonist: Mesperyian the Definitely Real Goddess of torture or smthn
And now we wait for the flood of misinformation that comes from those really poorly done myth channels, and all the ‘but actually!’ people trying to correct each other with material that doesn’t even exist… Not a criticism of the games, absolutely not, they look fun and inventive. Jake, your videos are real gems of knowledge, I hope people really pay attention to them.
Potential Video idea: you can find as many of these niche 1-2 remaining fragment characters as ya can and make a fast facts format vid rattleing them all off, then whenever Hades 3 gets announced in like 5 years you can be like: HA I BEAT YOU SUPER GIANT!!!!! I 'predicted' this would be your next character, and link to a version of the vid that you clearly just cut to only have the character thats the protag. You can win the long con
Hold on a minute i've read that melinoe's split down the middle being half white and half black (Orphic Hymn 71 to Melinoe (trans. Taylor) (Greek hymns C3rd B.C. to 2nd A.D.) : Hence, partly black thy limbs and partly white, from Plouton dark, from Zeus ethereal bright.) How come neither your design nor supergiant has this? Not trying to be rude just wandering.
Hmmm, Athanassakis and Wolkow (whose translation, for what it's worth, is much more recent so probably based on better scholarship) translate those lines to: "A two-bodied specter sprang forth from Persephone's fury." They don't give any explanation for that line in their notes, so I don't know how to interpret it. Their wording is certainly a lot more vague than Taylor's. The only clear description of Melinoë's appearance is in being "saffron cloaked", possibly associating her with the moon (think a full moon tinted yellow). For the sake of my design, I took just that part literally and gave her a yellow cloak. Supergiant also incorperated a similar color into her clothing, but every other distinctive trait in their design seems to be original.
Apollo, Nemesis, kronos, this is gonna be a starstudded cast! Also I assume her witch mentor might be hecate maybe? Edit: hell yeah we're on one page! And if hecate is involved you KNOW this shit's gonna get strange and good!
