Welcome to a week in the life on Arabella.
Friday:
The day starts off with a huuuge cup of coffee. The rainy day is the perfect opportunity for Steve to practice making eye splices with a double braided line.
Robin and Steve spend time training to get ready for their summer plans. While Robin has been consistent with her workouts, Steve needs to add to his routine in order to be ready for the climbing walls in Canada. The Flash Board and some floor exercises provide a nice workout circuit, but Steve has a great solution for working on strength and training-the Force Board. This tool can help determine their max pull power, assisting with hangboard training. Enjoy the friendly competition of finding out who’s stronger…
Saturday:
Robin finds a little piece of magic during a trip to the beach. Steve and Robin take advantage of the beautiful weather and go for a bike ride.
Sunday:
It’s finally feeling like spring. There’s nothing better than waking up to a clear and sunny day. After a long, cold, wet, windy winter, this change in weather is more than welcome to stay for a while.
Monday:
Steve takes some time to address the comments on the use of the plastic cutting board up in the rig to mount navigation. While this solution isn’t permanent, it works great for now and will allow the gear to be tested out on the water.
Tuesday:
Steve checks to make sure there are fasteners available for some pieces that need to get installed, including the hinges for the afterdeck, chalk for Victoria along with some cleats, and a bottle opener. With a work & play organized for the upcoming weekend in Harwich Port, it will be nice to have some projects ready to go. Looking forward to having some extra hands on deck!

Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

Dear Sailing Arabella couple. 👍👌👏 You two look just great together and complement each other so incredibly well. I absolutely loved to see and hear how exited Robin got while finding the whelk eggs and casings on the beach. I've never heard of anything like that before and instantly guggled it. Extremely interesting stuff. 3) Robin, you are a very, very well trained beautiful person. Fortunately you nevertheless have a cute/sweet face. Oftentimes humans doing a lot of sports become a "different" face from all the heavy physical efforts. 4) Of course does Steve have a lot of endurance power. How else could he have built a boat in his backyard for years. 5) How much was Akiva able to pull? 😁 ;-) Akiva is such a great calm dog. 💚

For the screw organization, I would suggest replacing your individual bins with ziplock bags. That would save the space, but still have it organized. I do this with electronic components a lot, have a label on each bag, and put a bunch of similar components into a box together.

Or one of those plastic organizer trays. Easy enough to just stuff in the back of a cabinet and you have all your fasteners organized and in one place.

Steve, the cutting boards you are using are fine; They are made of high density polyethylene (HDPE) and are a great outdoor material. From google: "One of HDPE's standout features is its RESISTANCE TO UV RADIATION. While prolonged exposure to sunlight can degrade many materials, HDPE remains steadfast. This property makes it an ideal candidate for outdoor applications, ranging from playground equipment to piping systems exposed to the elements." End Quote. You can protect them further from UV by painting them black a few coats then white a few coats. I have boats of my own and I love this stuff!! It's tough, flexible, and easy to work with. Read up on it and you'll see.
@Myseadreams
@Myseadreams Месяц назад
Unfortunately this is not exactly true. Without secondary UV stabilizers the boards will suffer degradation. Typically that is in the form of 2% carbon black. The is why all the commercial HDPE pipe is black not natural in color. This adds to the cost but is required by code. And yes I’ve been a working engineer in the plastic field for over 40 years.

It is definitely a bonus skill to be able to craft eye splices in double-braid rope. No more "hey, my good friend marlinspike magic expert, can you puh-leeze make me a splice." Endurance is something I've noticed comes with working a trade, there are other ways to get it, but with trade work endurance is just one of those things you gain and don't lose easily. There are old out of shape looking workers in the trades that surprise you when you're in your twenties and finally in your thirties you start to understand, you hold on no matter what. You could install one of these workers and they would still be there a hundred years later.

Forgot to mention in my last comment that you can get very large and thicker cutting boards from restaurant supply stores on the cheap compared to "Starboard" sold at West Marine. Because they are color-coded for different cutting applications; ie meat, fish, chicken, and veggies there are a few different colors like red, green, white, and yellow.

@@AcornToArabella They might be the last cutting boards serving as radar mounts, but as we say here in Germany: "There is nothing lasting as long as something set up as a temporary solution." In our case it were some boards on top of a dishwasher to hold the counterboard level. It should only serve as it for about a week. In the end it were seven years, and it ended just because we moved out into our new house.

Your cutting board mounts will last for years. I did the same thing as a temporary mount my solar vent on my foredeck. It has a camber and the vent needed to be mounted to a flat surface. I bought a cheap plastic cutting board and used a belt sander to grind the bottom surface to match the camber of the deck. It does not look the best any more with some UV damage that makes it look yellow but given that I did that in 1998 and it is still there even though the fan has been replaced 3 times indicates that yours will last until you WANT to replace it.
