Thank you for this presentation. My family is from Pittsburgh and my father who died in 1993, was a huge baseball fan who also grew up and lived in Pittsburgh while Josh Gibson played there. He saw him play many times and always told me that he was the greatest player who ever played. Although we moved to Harrisburg in 1947 I always was a fanatical Pirate fan. And when the incomparable Roberto Clemente came up he immediately became my favorite player…to this day. It is a great tragedy that Roberto’s number #21 has not been retired, not only of his heroic death but because Latin players, who are the dominant force in baseball, consider him to be their idol. Thank you again. Chuck Cohen

Josh Gibson is the greatest hitter ever lived. My dad saw him play winter ball in PR and he told no greater hitter ever held a bat. He laughed whenever someone said Bench is the greatest catcher ever. (His answer Bench couldnt carry Gibsons bat)

I don't know about that Johnny Bench was a great catcher and hitter. As was Josh Gibson there's no doubt Gibson was a really great player but unfortunately because of baseball's colour barrier Gibson never got the chance to play in the majors and records were not as well kept in the negro leagues. There was a lot of really good african american and latino players that should have been in the majors before Jackie Robinson broke the colour barrier. They did finally gotthier due when they got inducted into the HOF although many like Gibson had long passed away.

@@oldgordo61”The majors” wasn’t the better league though. I think the stats being solidified in history proves that. Also just use common sense Babe Ruth was smoking cigars and eating hot dogs in the dug out he wouldn’t have been able to hang without the color barrier plenty of black athletes would’ve done just fine in Major League Baseball.

No doubt Josh Gibson would have been a star among stars in the Major Leagues. Clearly his career was thwarted by the death of his young wife. Yet, the real culprit was the racist environment he suffered through. The player he was so often compared to, Babe Ruth, had a country club existence by contrast. Gibson couldn't go to restaurants or hotels as white ball players could. His pay was lower and he was constantly traveling by bus. The white teams traveled by Train. The average white baseball player had no idea what tough was. The conditions Gibson and the black players dealt with makes their accomplishments even greater. Ruth was the "White Josh Gibson." Not the other way around. Gibson drank himself to death, because he knew he was better than any white player alive. Perhaps since. Look at the All-Time Home Run lists and it is dominated by black players. Barry Bonds, (although tainted, ) Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Frank Robinson, Ernie Banks. And on and on and on. These five men totalled over 3,000 Home Runs in their fabulous careers. Those who saw them play say that Josh Gibson was the best among them. In the words of the Black Newspaper The Pittsburgh Courier," Josh Gibson was murdered by Big League Baseball." Him and all the other Black Stars who plied their trade in obscurity. Killed in cold blood by Jim Crow racism.

Many white ball players back in the were well aware of Satchel Paige Josh Gibson James Cool Papa Bell. And I know that the great John McGraw had much respect for Rube Foster who many say was the greatest mind when it came to baseball. It is said after McGraw passed away his widow found a list he made of all the black and latino players he wished could play for him.
@donaldschmidt2990
@donaldschmidt2990 6 месяцев назад
@oldgordo61 Everything you just said was a Dart through a Bullseye. In Ken Burns, great documentary Baseball, it was noted his wife found among his effects a secret list. This list contained the names of all the black players he wished to sign. Most notable was Oscar Charleston, the player manager of the Pittsburgh Crawfords. And Gibson's manager during his time with the Crawfords. McGraw called Charleston "The greatest player of all time." If only I could calamine (bleach) him," he lamented. Everyone talks about the 1927 Yankees and the great St.Louis Cardinal teams of that era. I have zero doubt the Crawfords were better than either white team. Numbers king Gus Greenlee's club was stocked with the greatest players in Negro baseball. Imagine an integrated team with that talent contained in it!! Is it any wonder that Major League baseball finally recognized Negro League statistics as Major League? "Spit balls, shine balls, I never knew what the ball would do once it left a pitcher's hand," said Hall of Fame catcher Roy Campanella. "As a result, Negro League batters learned to hit everything," said Baseball narrator John Chancellor. Including the finest pitchers Major League Baseball had to offer. Even the Commissioner's office finally had to confess to this long glaring omission.

The Negro Leagues were filled not only with men of unmeasureable talent, but also with stories that would put men like Aesop and the Grimm Brothers to shame. My favorite involves Josh. While playing for the Homestead Grays, he was in Pittsburgh, playing the Crawfords when he hit a ball so high, it disappeared from sight. People naturally assumed it was a home run. The next day, the same 2 teams and same umpire crew were in Washington, D.C., when a ball mysteriously dropped from the heavens and into a Crawfords outfielder's glove. The umpire turned to Josh and said 'You're out...yesterday in Pittsburgh!'
