I put together the most stacked home run derby in history to answer one question: who is the greatest home run hitter of all time?
It's a topic that has been and will be debated for generations. And while the argument can never be truly settled, today, with the help of MLB The Show, I'm gonna try to get an answer by putting the hardest hitters in history head to head to find the best of the best.

Bonds had one 50+ home run season, and only led the league in home runs twice over a 22 year career. His 2001 season is all people really remember. He wasn’t the best home run hitter of all time if you look at a rate basis, he was just the most consistent over a longer period of time. Mark McGwire had four 50+ home run seasons and led the league in homers 4 times in his 16 year career. McGwire’s career home run per at bat rate: 10.61. Bonds career home run per at bat rate: 12.92. McGwire also had 4,946 less plate appearances than Bonds. If McGwire had as many plate appearances as Bonds did he would’ve hit 960 home runs. McGwire is the true best power hitter of all time, and if I haven’t convinced you with the numbers I’d love to hear your argument.

The ideal way to win the home run derby is to hit line drive wallscrapers and also two 440 footers, because the game doesn't let another pitch get thrown until the previous one lands. Guys like Tim Locastro can win derbies at high elevation stadiums because of it.

Prime Steroid Giant Barry Bonds was, without question the most dominant HR hitter of all time. Guy was dropping 70 bombs WHILE taking 200 walks. Nothing ever like that. He was a monster pre juice but his power game was in the 33 a year HR range, 40 to 50 stolen bases, and stellar defense. When his head started to grow, I still want to know what exercise makes your hat size go up 4 or 5 non fraction sizings. But when his head grew, that choked up bat was the most dominant offensive threat in MLB history. You can hate the roids, the era, and even Bonds himself, but you can’t deny that presence. Screw a derby, MLB pitching vs MLB hitting, Bonds was THAT dude.

Facts I think with the obvious Juicers in the game there should be a way their power is mediocre until they enter "Juice mode" or something then and only then can they approach the likes of Aaron, Mays or Griffey, McGwire and Sosa don't belong in any discussion with the rest of the guys.

F No dude was insufferable, Both guys underwhelmed in the postseason....Bonds finally had a little success with the needles assistance but before that He was always a post season no show, the most maddening thing about Bonds was He was an easy HOFer without the juice, But He got got jealous over a couple roid heads grabbing more attention than him and preceded to piss on his own legacy as well. Instead of being Cobb, an all time great who was also an all time A**hole Bonds just became An All time A**hole who roided out so bad his head grew, THAT's his legacy.

Like, I'd love to simulate an entire career for the man, just to see if he could stand even closer to the other giants of the game than he already does with his career having been cut tragically short. His last full season was at the age of 35. Played eight games during his age 36 season. He would’ve had about 4 more seasons. He would’ve started declining during that time as well. He was the og Ironman after all so I’m sure he was extremely tired. He would’ve made it to the 3000 hit/500 homer club though. Maybe 600 homer club if he was able to keep his production up. He would’ve also gotten to 2000 RBIs. He definitely could’ve beefed up his stats if he played a few more years though. At the same time it could ruin some of his stats like his .340 career average and 1.080 career ops. That’s just mental to think about someone having an above 1.000 career ops. Also I was looking through his stats on baseball reference and he only has TWO career gdp(grounded into double plays). They didn’t start tracking them until his last season where he only played eight games lol.

To bring the seemingly endless debate to this comment section: Bonds, McGwire, and Sosa all deserve to be in the hall. You cant tell baseball's history without em, and none of them ever won a World Series while juiced. Plus, steroids dont give you inhuman levels of plate discipline, AND the pitchers were juiced too. On that point, Gagne and Clemens should be in the hall too.
