These are the scenes of my youth - I was born, grew up and still live in N. Ireland. The army was everywhere, machine guns were a non-remarkable thing cos they were an every day sight. Paramilitary Terrorists and armed forces meant Shootings, Bombs/bomb scares were so common that they became 'normal'.....Police & Army checkpoints were every few miles, so you would have to produce photo ID....most times with a machine gun inches away from your face. Our so-called 'peace' is still very fragile and the fall out from Brexit is making tensions rise again😞 Our Elections are tomorrow for our 'devolved' government, but our so-called politicians are part of the problem - they're a disgrace! All we want is PEACE☮ *R.I.P. Dolores* for giving us this song💔....it is part of our blood stained history and 'The Troubles'. It's message is overwhelming powerful.

Hopefully there’s is complete peace one day. I live in Dublin I have friends who had to walk to work everyday with this happening. We in the 26 counties here it on the news and we’re horrified but when you talk to people who have lived through it, there are no words.

Good luck my friend but as we here in the US know that elections aren't because of us it's for the elites to pick. Kinda like we are right now. This geriatric fool that is in now is gonna get us into number 3 and gonna starve us I the fall. That's why most of us don't depend on these yahoos, we grow our own and take care of our own. Peace to ya my friend. I blame my forefathers for leaving Ireland and put me here to deal with these idiots they call politicians. Corruption is everywhere for sure, no matter what country we are in I'm afraid

Over a billion views can't be wrong! Such a powerful song. The terrorist bombing mentioned in the song is part of a larger conflict in Ireland known as The Troubles, and going back further with the Easter Rising (the 1916 line). Though UK and Ireland's issues go back much further than that. RIP Dolores. The Bad Wolves tribute (it was supposed to be a collab before she died unexpectedly) is amazing as well.

Dolores O'Riordan was the singer and she's "keening", a type of singing used in Irish culture for mourning at funerals. They were in the middle of the violence in Ireland and this is about terrorist bombing that killed 2 kids. They wanted you to feel it too.
@christinerobinson9372

This is not keening. It is the Irish yodel, distinctive to the Irish. Keening is a wailing, closer to the howling of a wolf. It is an expression of grief that can not be contained.

I love The Cranberries! I was 11 when this song came out. Didn’t have the cassette tape and we didn’t have Google back then so I didn’t have all the lyrics in front of me to read (lol). And I was 11 so I didn’t sit there and listen to it from beginning to end just to listen to the lyrics but I heard the majority of them and saw the video. Just googled it now to see what it was actually about (says it was written by the band's lead singer Dolores O'Riordan in memory of Johnathan Ball and Tim Parry, who were killed in the 1993 Warrington bombings). Love her voice and how much she cares! Such a strong and powerful voice/song!

This is possibly the finest rock lament concerning politics; in this case 'The Troubles' (British understatement there) of Northern Ireland. Neither Protestant nor Catholic sides' extremists at the time were prepared to break the cycle of retaliation over the latest atrocity and neither seemed to much care if the other side's children were victims. The reference to 1916 is when Irish Nationalists took arms in support of Irish self rule. As this was in the middle of WWI the response by the British Army was absurdly savage and helped bring about Irish Independence, but divided the country with the North remaining in the UK. Violence took hold there again in 1969. When this came out I mostly heard the anger in the song, but now as an aging man I hear the despair. The song is an awesome reminder that, where there is a choice, talking is always preferable to violence.

Dolores Mary Eileen O'Riordan 6 September 1971 - she died 15 January 2018) was an Irish musician, singer and songwriter. She was best known as the lead vocalist and lyricist for the alternative rock band the Cranberries.The song is about 2 incidends 1916: Ireland. The total 429 persons killed, 116 were Military personnel, 3 were policemen and 310 were civilians. There were 38 children - aged 16 and under - killed. 1993 Zombie" is a protest song by Irish alternative rock band the Cranberries, written by the band's lead singer Dolores O'Riordan in memory of Johnathan Ball and Tim Parry, who were killed in the 1993 Warrington bombings. The horrific part of it was the 2 boys been killed - were a 3 and 12 year old. Jonathan Ball, three, and Tim Parry, 12, died and 54 others were hurt when two bombs hidden in litter bins went off in Bridge Street on 20 March 1993. People easy to talk revenge and enter a war, but the realities are horrific.

I am in India.. and was about 16 when I saw this song in the 1990s… could never forget it and I was so stunned by this song.. Though it’s about IRA bombings and Ireland’s struggles, India also had a lot of trouble at that time and we used to have a lot of terror attacks and bombings and thousands dying, so that feeling of grief and insecurity resonated a lot with me too. I think the golden painted mother and the angels may be based on Pieta by Michelangelo.

So, this is a protest song, written by the amazing lead singer of The Cranberries, Dolores O'Riordan, who sadly passed away in 2018. The interesting sounding oh-oh, eh-eh, etc in this song is a form of "Keening" which is used to this day at Irish funerals to lament the dead. This song was written in response to two boys, aged 3 and 12, being killed by an Irish Republican Army (IRA) bombing in Warrington, England. Northern Ireland was in a sort of irregular civil war from 1916 until the signing of the Good Friday Peace treaty in 1998. It was defined by the IRA, who wanted to merge Northern Ireland with Ireland, and the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) who were loyal to the crown in the United Kingdom. If you want to know more, a good place to start is the Wiki page on "The Troubles"

Delores O’Riordan is the singer. The song and video is about the civil unrest and decades long struggle regarding the re-unification of Belfast, and Northern Ireland and Ireland, and the thousands of deaths that occurred. Long complicated reasons, but largely attributable to British colonization and because Catholics and Protestants didn’t like each other.

Agreed. The small, yet significant, switch/update from "guns" to "drones" is well-thought. Perhaps the acoustic version is a good suggestion, since it allows you to focus on the lyrics. (I tend to favor acoustic versions, since it's easier to carry an acoustic guitar around and play whenever you feel like it.)

You should really react to The Bad Wolves' version of this song. Dolores was supposed to sing on the cover with them and was found dead that very morning. The Bad Wolves were literally living out of a car at the time but donated all the proceeds of the song to Dolores's children! They did an amazing respectful job on the song, trust me, it took me a very Ling time to even give it a chance despite hearing very good things. In my heart, only Dolores could sing thus song. I wish I listened sooner!

now listen to the bad wolves cover. it's very different to the cranberries but it was highly approved by Delores who was supposed to sing on it but she unfortunately passed.

There is another good song about The Troubles in Northern Ireland, it's called Broken Land by The Adventures. Most played song on BBC radio 1 the year it was released.

RIP Delores. She was and will remain an iconic voice and spirit. You have to react to Bad Wolves' cover of this song...it's such an amazing rendition and tribute. Sending you and your loved ones best wishes from Scotland.
