Hey guys, today I am talking about punk-rock fashion history legend 'Dame Vivienne Westwood.' I have discussed all the important parts of the Vivienne Westwood timeline. From when she met Malcolm Mclaren to the opening of 'Let It Rock,' At 430 kings road, Chelsea London. Which was later changed to 'too fast to live, too young to die' and then to 'sex' and then to the 'seditionaries' and then finally 'world's end.' I also talk briefly about the sex pistols and their role in the story as well as some iconic shows such as her pirate themed show as well as the infamous show in which we saw Naomi Campbell take a gracious tumble.

I know it’s a Westwood video but McLaren plays a huge role in her rise to fame. He basically created the Sex Pistols, and was responsible for letting Westwood make them their clothes. He needed the clothes to match their wild personality. However, McLaren also studied fashion like crazy, and had the store before Westwood. He was also responsible for some of the crazy graphics put out, like the rapist on a tee and the swastikas on sweatshirts. Listening to either of them talk during the time and it’s clear it’s Malcolm who has the ideas and Westwood who brings them to life. Westwood, when asked about using a swastika, gives no reason other than it looks cool. She didn’t even seem to understand the significance of the work she was creating. Even recently, she’s gone on record saying punk was an excuse to dress up. Whereas Westwood is all about projecting the idea about punk and anarchy, McLaren himself was considered to be anarchy incarnate at the time.

Yeah you’re completely right, I just didn’t want to go on a tangent and talk too much about Malcolm McLaren when the video is about Vivienne Westwood. It can be really tough structuring these videos. I’ll give you a good example: I’m working on a video about Rei Kawakubo, if I go on a tangent and talk about the whole Comme Des Garçons empire and all the huge players in it like Tao Kurihara, Junya Watanabe, Adrian Joffe etc, the video will end up being hours long and the whole point of trying to get people to learn about fashion will be missed as people won’t watch a video so long. I think the solution is I may have to make separate videos as follow up videos on individuals who play big parts in certain stories.
@irvingcruz9766
@irvingcruz9766 5 лет назад
The Fashion Archive I see what the going off on a tangent problem can be. I feel like you should break them up into parts, however you want to break them up into would be fine. It could be a chronological analysis, or breaking up the videos into recaps into a certain time period. For example, the shop and the punk rock 73-79 ish era could be a video. The 80-84 ish era where their(MM &VW) is still together and hip hop influenced could also be a separate video. Then breaking up the rest of her periods would be individual videos. Since each one is separate each one would likely get the same amount of views with different viewers, and with auto play, they would likely roll over into each other. Liked the video though, crazy how a influencer focused video got more views than this gem. Been watching you for a long time since I don’t know when. I think you used to comment saying you were a new channel who was going to talk about fashion on a video and checked your channel out.
@FashionRoadman
@FashionRoadman 5 лет назад
Yeah I think now when I cover huge designers I will have to make the videos in parts and put them in a playlist. As for the influencer video it’s sad really because that was just a random rant and it got more views than a detailed video I made about an iconic designer. Just goes to show youtube is really for the more popular stuff but I still don’t care, I’ll continue making videos about fashion designers and hopefully people will catch on. Thanks so much for supporting all this time btw ❤️

This comment right here. He did play a significant part in the style too. Would style proto punk bands such as The New York Dolls and plaid a pretty big part in the foundation of the style. Great video though.

You could argue Westwood's influence is evident in some trends we have today. The bondage in stuff like Alyx, the plaid and skinny in Fear of God.

I saw a video recently with Stella McCartney on sustainability. VW was in the audience saying she was struggling to find sustainable materials etc. Stella McCartney offered to hook her up with info. She then offered VW a job which was extremely cringey so I hope it didn't put VW off getting the info she needed.
@FashionRoadman

Stella McCartney is extremely innovative and she has teams that work on this stuff all the time so I hope VW drops her ego and gets the information she needs.

I appreciate and respect what she has done for fashion but she is an absolute hypocrite with her activism rubbish. How can the creator of such a huge global brand protest so much about climate change when her company contributes so much to it with production, transport, and sourcing? She claims the phrase "buy less" but releases an 80-look collection for Fall 2019, with a lot of it being uninteresting and wasteful "crap." She preaches against the negative effects of clothing production but ranks very low in sustainability. She speaks against the "filthy rich" but is worth $50 million and has in the past been charged for tax avoidance. She is a clear greenwasher, using her outrageous protests and "activism" as well as this green image to cause a stir, draw attention to her name, and therefore her company to promote sales. She did the same with the punk movement, simply using the outrageousness of it and the shock factor for attention until it gained too negative a reputation so she moved on to climate change as her new form of marketing. I personally cannot see past her hypocrisy and I think what she does is immoral and I don't why people don't see through this facade she puts on. In my opinion, if any brand or designer needs to be "cancelled" (other than D&G) it is her and her brand.
@FashionRoadman
@FashionRoadman 5 лет назад
Haha I totally agree politically she’s a walking contradiction. The history of her brand doesn’t add up, it would’ve made a lot more sense if she continued with her “I don’t care” persona. What she’s doing now is like being someone who murdered 100s of people and then being an advocate of preventing murder. Doesn’t make sense. I still think she’s a legend for what she’s done but the protesting stuff needs to take a backseat.

@@FashionRoadman if you look into the history of her logos you would know exactly what the brand is all about... but the clothing is great and not at all expensive.... so forget the hypocrisy and just enjoy the clothing... cos at the end of the day ...as Method Man said 'Behind every fortune is a Crime' ... What about the Orb pendants and the logo??!
@FashionRoadman
@FashionRoadman 4 года назад
The orb pendants and the logo don’t have any historical backing. They were introduced at the brand as a way to make money and for people to identify the brand easier (most high end brands make majority of their money from accessories and footwear). The logo is inspired by “World’s End” hence the logo having a globe.
