Who is Wapeach? A Complete History of a Gaming Mystery 

Because the original source for Wapeach has now gone offline, I thought I should share some of the now lost comments from that post here. Honestly, one could rework Wapeach to be a character that would boss people around, but no one would take seriously (which makes sense, since she's a child and probably not even a real figure of authority like _Princess_ Peach). Wapeach may think Wario and Waluigi are her goons, but Wario and Waluigi are more under the impression that they're supposed to babysit her.

Man, I NEED Wapeach to be a real character now. I LOVE this design! She gives the impression of a bratty and violent child, contrasting with the refined and peaceful adult that is Peach.

I think Wapeach could have worked with inverse roles in a way. Wario and Waluigi are their own bosses, but she tags along. While the guys do their own thing, she playfully helps out, possibly often making it harder for them unintentionally

Regarding the possibility of a 'WaDaisy' character: In 64Dream's July 2000 issue, the Takahashi brothers explicitly mentioned giving both Wario *and* Waluigi girlfriends. We had the interview translated earlier this year for a DYKG video: S. Takahashi: We wanted Luigi to have a partner like Mario and Peach and when we asked Nintendo “who can we go with?” they said they had this girl called Daisy already. So we thought, if Mario has a girl to be paired with, it would be pretty sad for Luigi if he didn’t get a partner too (lol). H. Takahashi: From there we talked about giving Wario and Waluigi girlfriends too, but Miyamoto said that he “didn’t want to see Wario and Waluigi’s girlfriends.” (lol) S. Takahashi: You can more or less imagine what they’d be like (lol). Part of me wishes we had pairs so everyone could do couples doubles matches. H. Takahashi: You would have seen Wario’s girlfriend if only Miyamoto gave us the go ahead.

I’ll be honest, I never really cared for the idea of a Wapeach, but I actually really like her style. I don’t know if she’d fit in thematically with the other Mario characters, but maybe seeing her in action would change my mind. I hope she was gonna be MEAN, real boastful with a fragile ego, something like that

This may be my own interpretation of her character, but I think Ashley has become what she could have been. A young, adorable girl who is used to getting her way and is mostly harmless while so unless she becomes annoyed (or bored), in which case she unleashes terrifying punishment on anyone nearby. Her and Wario DEFINITELY are not love interests. In fact, they don't even interract with each other hardly, and at the most, he acts somewhere between a boss she doesn't respect and an unwilling pawn to her whim. Syrup is also a GREAT candidate to bring back as a "Waru-Peach" in an official manner since she seems like she's to Peach as Wario is to Mario.

I think she should be named "Weach" instead. It kinda sounds like "Witch", guess it would suit the character well

I personally would prefer for her to have a different name than Wapeach, or anything that doesn't need the "Wa". Maybe something in the direction of like, "Thorn"? "Mold"? "Grimace"? Just something that closely follows the naming scheme of the other princesses (assuming Wapeach is supposed to be a princess), but still tells us that she ain't leaving Santa's naughty list.

The true WaPeach was the Captain Syrup we got along the way. Still, the idea of a bossy brat trying to run the show with Wario barely tolerating or listening to her feels oddly on brand. Like, she'd be clever enough to come up with schemes to gain gold and impress her would be subordinates, but Wario's the one actually calling the shots and leading the group. Leaving WaLuigi to desperately try to calm the kid down when Wario's callousness sets off a tantrum.

I really like the Wapeach design, if her design was tweaked a little I can easily see her as an evil Jester girl to counter Princess Peach. I imagine her personality as more mischievous and tricky, with a proclivity for cartoony violence, maybe a little similar to Justice League Action’s version of Harley Quinn. She’s still young and childish but has moments of unhinged menace. Her name shouldn’t be Wapeach though, give her some kind of clown like name, Pierrette or something. Her costume should be black to giver her an original color. Show that all three members of the Wa-gang will have original colors.

I’m wondering if Grape from PP Showtime will have a true humanoid princess form. I’m hoping so, and that she becomes a regular playable spin-off character. Having an evil princess would be so cool, even if it’s not a WaPeach.

There is an artist called Dr. Spade and his / her take on the character (renamed to Apricot) made me fall in love with taking a "sassy, short tempered pipsqueak" direction with the character.

They could’ve added Boshi in Power Tennis and then Wapeach would have a partner.

Well, it looks like Nintendo got to poor Fumihide Aoki, because he took down all the Wapeach stuff and made his Instagram account private. Thank goodness videos like this exist to preserve all this.

We could still have a way to make the dynamic work in some capacity while keeping Wario's personality. What if Wapeach was introduced as Wario's daughter? A child that he cares so much for that he ends up obeying her every orders without question.

That last part of the video... I think you have hit the nail head on, it's too late for a character like Wapeach to ever exist while keeping her ties with Wario because it just doesn't work, Wario is not that kind of character and he would never have that dynamic on a fundamental level.

Wapeach could have a Partner being Boshi as a Equal and maybe Boshi Having a Cat Species that is like poochy but on a Cat that only wants Fish or cat toys, Wapeach being a friend of Bowser Jr from the School being the Scary little Cousin of Peach

does anyone else find it weird that this was revealed 19 years later out of the blue? prob nothing but what if this does actually lead to something in the future. Peach def should have an "evil" counterpart for the spin off titles.

18:30 Interesting story about that - they're more based on the trope "Sanaku" (or "Three Evils"), which Time Bokan did lay the groundwork for, but TR's creator has said he used the TB trio as a jumping-off point to make TR easier to grasp, then they became their own thing soon after. But I don't anna take away from what was a great watch. You dissected the story in an easy to follow and entertaining manner in a way that no one else could be bothered to. Good stuff!

I have a feeling that she would had been adopted more by Wario and Waluigi, Wario only having her for her use in the future for gold but Waluigi actually do care about her and try to raise her to be whatever she wants, to be like them or whatever she wants, could be a cool character idea and I see that personally as what I see.

I wouldn't mind if Wapeach was basically turned into a character that is apparently less evil than Wario, Waluigi, and Bowser on her surface. From the perspective of everyone, including the audience, she just gets through life by trying to emulate Peach's niceness. She even takes losses she percieves to be fair with dignity and grace, which really weirds out her partners Wario and Waluigi. However, after a certain bad day, she immediately flips and acts like a spoiled brat that nobody takes seriously at first before proving to everyone how much she's really been holding back. She's not a Peach copycat no matter what her act could've told you beforehand, she's her own character with a horrible mean and petty streak and a workaholic attitude that she constantly prides a perfect society and a perfect sense of self-presentation, which she throws temper tantrums if no one else follows along with her idealism. She takes Peach's innocence, and gives it a dark "Either you are with me or you are against me, and trust me. *You don't want to be against me"* And redesign her to be a bit more tired and having to force herself to look more physically like Peach and Daisy. Maybe even just give her a black and white design that contrasts Wario's and Waluigi's Purple and Yellow focused design is.

Knowing Nintendo if they were to introduce a bad version of Peach they would just use Captain Syrup. Captain Syrup is a gorgeous female Pirate who uses her beauty and charm to ruthlessly steal treasure while commanding henchmen. Not only that, but she uses her wit when her flattery doesn't work.

Just based off of the design, she looks like a kid. I can picture her as being a bratty and snooty princess who believes she’s better than everyone else and constantly flaunts her royalty to get what she wants.

I had an idea that instead of following the typical convention of having wah in front of the name, Peach's counterpart could have the p reversed into a b, making her princess beach or bichi-hime to Japan's pichi-hime. She could contrast peach's kind, passive, and loving nature with violence, aggression, and spiteful hate, always acting like she has sand in her boots. I also just think it would be fun if this beach got past the nintendo censors.

Now we need a Wowser who's a Nice King, & Wowser Jr. As a Friendly Woopa Prince.

Fun fact: The idea of WaPeach being the Doronjo type with that design would actually be canon in Yatterman Night. Go look it up. And heh... the concept predicted Yatterman's sequel series there.

Technically, I'd make the argument that Peach already has a "bad" counterpart in the form of Bowser, though most wouldn't make that argument because they see him as just that, as Bowser. Admittedly, if Wapeach is the "bad" Peach, what would a "good" Bowser look like? Now that's a question I don't think anyone has thought of before...

"she would look too much like Doronjo!" How's that s bad thing? We got characters based on other classic ones in the past and people liked them. If everyone had the same mindset as Miyamoto, Johnny Cage and Fei Long would not exist at all. Besides, Wapeach could be like a cute ojou-sama type of character that tries to be mean and bossy but ends up being cute and people like Wario and Waluigi would not take her seriously.

Oddly enough, the concept of a child-like Doronjo would later be used a decade later in Yatterman Night, the Time Bokan 40th anniversary series.

As interesting of a topic Wapeach is, I think it's for the best that it never came to be. Waluigi has, for all practical intents and purposes, been relegated to just the spin-offs with no unique role. Just filler, yet another playable character in multiplayer-themed spin-offs. While he works well as a joke character IMO, another character resigned to only spin-offs might have been too much.

I think it'd be cool if there was a Wadaisy as a sister to Wapeach and they could be two bratty kids or something (so they can be eachother's tennis partners) or just thinking about how Wario wouldn't just be her goon, maybe he and Waluigi just become their caretakes of these two and try and teach them to be bad

Great accurate in this information. Still, between this and Bowsette something tells me that the higher ups at Nintendo needs to reconsider how fans enjoy these characters that they deny. Sometimes it would be nice to see the Big Nintendo acknowledge the fans and their enthusiasm for these fan Characters beyond their own ip.

What this video has made me realize is how formative Mario Tennis 64 was in defining the Mario spin-off cast, since the need for doubles partners seems to be a big part of why Daisy, Birdo, and Waluigi are cast mainstays now

I find it interesting that their bad variant of a Mario Princess is basically the bratty bossy little girl archetype. I think it's actually a really clever way to go, because it's still an appealing character and still fits within the Mario universe. It also works in a sense similar to how Wario does: Princess Peach is much more mature, calm, composed, and proper; this character is also a princess, but immature, presumably loud, snotty, and selfish. I think if they went the route of making a character that was more disgusting, brutish, or even sexy, it would feel very out of place compared to they rest of the Mario cast. It is a giant shame though that she won't probably be canon bc Nintendo has a habit of burying ideas they don't like and hiding things they want to revisit until they think we are ready for them. But I think the concept is sound and considering we live in a timeline where we still don't have Captain Syrup or any of the Ware characters in a spin-off game... This is probably the closest we ever got and ever will get to some sort of "bad princess" in the mainstay cast. 😕

That design looks like the robot girl with the pony tail from Mighty No 9.

It makes sense that they scrapped Wapeach for Waluigi. Since Luigi is Mario's partner, it would be more logical to make Wario's partner a Wario version of Luigi.

I think if Peach ever got another game where she is the main protagonist again after Princess Peach Showtime then maybe WaPeach could be revisited and be either the main antagonist of that game or someone who tries to challenge Peach throughout the game since she is Peach’s self proclaimed rival and I think her personality would also be larger than life and over the top as well to contrast with Peach’s more quiet and reserved nature as well.

Funnily enough, a couple of years ago the time bokan series introduced a child version of Doronjo in Yatterman Night with a similar concept, just a funny coincidence now seeing the final design and how that would have gone full circle if that had ever happened That said I did expected a Doronjo look alike seeing all the comparisons the Waru bros had to her lackeys.

She doesn't look that bad, but honestly, she doesn't need to exist cause Wario and Waluigi are enough

Shigeru Miyamoto Has arguably made his fair share of Regrettable bad decisions throughout his his career, But the biggest one I would say is denying the world This MAGNIFICENT character: Wapeach.

I thought Waluigi design was inspired by Dick Dastardly from Hanna-Barbera classic cartoons! They both resemble each other for being a bad version of a villain, but I learned that Wapeach was inspired by Doronjo, a Japanese classic cartoon!

As a Time Bokan fan Wapeach's design reminds me more of Marjo from the original time bokan series, funny enough another series in the Time Bokan franchise called Yattodetaman has a villain who's a bratty child prince and in Yatterman Nights the main character is Doronjo's descendant who's a little girl.

If Nintendo wanted to have bad versions of Princesses Peach & Daisy, they could make characters & name them Mistress Leech & Mistress Hazy, they wouldn't be royalty, but they wouldn't be children either, but they would be opposite to Peach & Daisy.

Doronjo has a half dozen forms but the cat mask from is her most iconic one. The 2nd most iconic is the one that wapeach is inspired by, it's about a 1 for 1. As well they had a series come out where Doronjo has a descendant named leopard, that is pretty much wapeach but with a cat mask. I do like the idea of wapeach finishing the bad guy trio, as many anime were inspired by time boken. However I fully agree with Miyamoto that she needs to have a unique enough look to her. Like Jessie James and Meowth copy the same formula, but they look unique enough that you wouldn't draw the comparison till you see how they act in the show.

I think it’d be cool to have wapeach reworked as a boss or ally in a future wario land game.

Wapeach looks like a character from an obscure PS1 platforming game that was developed in Klundert, North Brabant & was only released in the Netherlands in 2001 before some company like XS Games or Mud Duck Productions released it in the US for $10.

Someone, please make a fan project where Wapeach is a character.

I remember playing Tatsunoko vs. Capcom on my Wii around mid 2010s and seeing Doronjo's henchmen for the first time and thinking to myself "her henchmen look oddly similar to Wario and Waluigi" and years I found that Wario and Waluigi designs were actually inspired by Doronjo's henchmen.

Hilda is one of my favorite Nintendo villains, I hate how we don't get evil princesses or even evil queens in the girlboss era. Wapeach looks like such an adorable brat. I would love a Mario game with her as the villain bullying Bowser and threatening to annex the Mushroom Kingdom so there's a logical reason for Peach and Daisy to be playable protagonists.

I feel the closest thing to wapeach nowadays is Ashley from Warioware. Not an exact match, but shares a few similarities.

Of course Miyamoto would be the one rejecting something that in my opinion would of been a great addition to the series… He’s done this several times with other things, like a blatant refusal to allow engaging stories in the mainline games… (I think it was also some of his decisions that would lead games like Paper Mario Sticker Star to be what they are, but I’m not entirely sure on that one)

I have known about Wapeach for a while, as Waluigi was created to give Wario a partner for Mario Tennis 64 and the creation of him would lead to the idea of creating other foil characters. I never knew though that there was an attempt for a Wapeach, though. And given how her concept model is rather high-quality, it does look like she was not made for Mario Tennis 64 (if she was for 64, then it would be less poly). Also, the charatcer design of Waluigi being based on an anime was very left-field, and how Wapeach extended on those references.

Now compare Doronjo and her henchmen to the *Pokemon* anime's Team Rocket (Jesse AND James); include the talking Meowth as well, as this is pretty much "Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask turned into Doronjo and her one henchmen", making the other hench the same as the talking cat. As for the partner problem, the solution is found in a short film series made like a low budget DBZ clone; Toad and his evil counterpart (the Nemetoad) are drawn like sayians. Look up "Toad's Fury" or "Toad's Rage" to see _most_ of it, as a few chapters seem to be lost... :(

I was thinking Wapeach could be green and themed around lizards and dragons with a bossy personality and Wadaisy could be purple/blue and themed around spiders and insects with a cocky and mean personality. Make one tall and lanky and the other chonky and short. Bonus points if the chonky and short one is hot-headed. Make both fight with the “Wa” brothers like angry old married couples. Pair the chonky strong one with Waluigi and occasionally use him as a weapon.

Tbh, I really like the idea of Wapeach and her design, but I'd want her to be completely separate from Peach. It would be fun to have a character that looks innocent but has the tendency to get angry or even violent.

Nintendo: "We don't want to see wapeach, she wouldn't be cute, she'd either be gross or a ripoff of a known character" Camelot: "Ok" Character designer from Camelot, decades later: _Posts concept art for wapeach, who turns out to be really cute and NOT a ripoff of a known character_ Nintendo: "...we may have made a mistake here..." Yes, I know it's most likely that Wapeach came significantly later. I know I'm probably speculating here but I feel like this version of Wapeach wouldn't actually be that different from what Camelot originally had in mind - I talked more about that in my other post but to summarized: the wa-characters are visual exaggerations of the their heroic counterparts, Peach is supposed to be cute and dainty, therefore the exaggeration of her would literally be a somewhat chibified version of her, like what we see in the "unofficial but made by an official source" concept art.

Seeing as the name written over "WaPeach" in the concept art says "Pleach," I think it's safe to say her design is based off a leach, not a cat.

This character legit only got denied BECAUSE Waluigi was too similar to another copyrighted character for Miyamoto’s liking but the company likely went against his word and allowed it that one time because of seemingly constant time constraints at Nintendo during those early video game years before the 2000’s. Anything after that was guaranteed to be denied simply because of that. That’s likely the story. There is no way he saw this character as its said to have actually been drawn originally in this video and said no based on the design. Not a chance.

Considering the look of the model, you can tell it was made for the GameCube and not the N64.

If they added wapeach.l, along with waluigi and wario, they would resemble the "Doronbo gang" from "time bokkan : Yattaman" which inspired team rockets jesdie, james and meowth. Tell me if this is familiar, a loud and bossy girl lead a tall lanky guy with a moustache that invents thing and a short muscular slob, to create cheap buisness ideas to scam people out of their money to help fund their robots to take down the heroes and beat them to the latest prize. Not exactly the same, but it's proof that if wapeach was added they would work perfectly as a trio. Even just for party games.

I still like the name "Warupichi" better, but I can accept "Wapeach" after taking "Waluigi" into consideration. I guess I'm just used to "Waluigi" so I never noticed how less creative than "Wario" or even "Warupichi" is.

We could've gotten a canon goth girl in the Mario universe and they took it away from us.
