He was just trying to keep his job. It's not his fault that whoever did it was very careful not to leave any identifying evidence. Also she was killed right after getting out of her car parked in front to enter her house. She didn't go to that house very often. She lived with her fiancé. She only went that day to put paper in her fax machine. It doesn't make sense that it was random. Someone knew she was coming home that day or followed her car.

To be very honest all of this is what is the most plausible theory to me, cause there’s something really off about the guy. I sniff nothing good about him. Stopped watching the doc at one point because I just couldn’t get over how I felt about that first lover boss guy. From what one of the people who described his treatment of her said in the doc, it just sounds like he was down right rude to her, which is typical of influential misogynists who think that they own the women in their lives. I really don’t see a guy with that type of personality profile just accepting rejection. Make no mistakes, whereas I could be wrong about this, I do believe that she did use him, but then again so did he use her. These types of relationships are transactional, and after all is said and done no one owes anyone anything. He gave her career a legs up, and as a result got to enjoy a relationship of no short than seven years with her; not only did he have his time with her, as he actually got her best years -transaction done! ✔️ But as you implied as well, with these “controlling” types the debt is never paid, and I really smell a rat with this one.
