Watercooling is pretty cool. But hard to make fit in Small Form Factor cases. Even with compact options from the likes of Alphacool or EK, trying to make the pump, reservoir, and radiators fit in a way that can also cool your Nvidia RTX 4090 and Intel Core i9-13900K is a tall order. Billet Labs hopes to change that with their Monoblock. Perhaps the most overkill SFF water cooling solution we've ever seen.

Hey! After a bit of tinkering post-video we saw improved thermals with the Monoblock. Running Cinebench and MSI Afterburner for 30 minutes we saw temps peak at CPU: 85 C on the 12900KS GPU Hotspot: 87 C on 4090. (remember this is the without using the proper kit for the 4090) What do you think about this MonoBlock? Let us know below! No joke, talk about adding insult to injury. Testing something without the proper card. Acknowledging they weren't using the right card, but still going full "LEETTTTT"SSSS GOOOOOOO!" on a review that was flawed from the get go. When called on it, basically saying it wasn't worth their time to do it right. Then allegedly auctioning off a prototype that LMG is said to have promised to return not once, but twice. Certainly not a good look for an organization trying to step into legitimate hardware testing.

(Felix from BilletLabs here) Great video guys! But this block was specifically for a 3090ti, not a 4090. We've since obtained a 4090 to test with, and using it with the 3090ti block leaves a gap of around 1mm over the die, so it's never going to cool properly. Linus and LTT have a history of not reading instructions (or not knowing how something works) and blaming the product. They do this like once a week. I just reviewed the video after the GN one and its pretty much fine. They try it on a 4090, say that it's the wrong gpu to use with this and move on. 99% of this video is about how the build experience and practicality of this thing are. LTT became a sumbag Inc. Billet Labs sent a prototype to LTT for testing. Billet was originally okay with LTT keeping the block for future builds, etc. After it turned out that Linus didn't like the product, they asked for it to be returned as mentioned in the email displayed. LTT tested it on the wrong GPU model. Results were bad... y'know, because they didn't use the GPU the block was designed for. LTT got some scathing feedback about the poor testing methodology. Linus defended their decision to use the wrong GPU for testing on the WAN show by saying it shouldn't be expected of him to spend an extra $500 to do the testing properly and shat on the product, claiming that it's bad anyway, so why bother. LTT never sent the prototype back to Billet Labs, but rather auctioned it off at their expo.

Crazy how a company valued at 100 million dollars refused to spend 500 of that on re-testing a product, pinning poor performance resulted from literally not reading the instructions onto the product itself, and *STEALING* (edit: this was far more likely miscommunication in sample product expectations as well as the chain of command rather than actual stealing) a prototype from them after promising to return it, giving it to a bidder who can now clone their product. insane.

having worked as a CNC technician I can tell you that paper gaskets are perfectly fine. they probably decided to go with paper because of cost along with thermal performance of the gasket. paper gaskets are used to seal gear boxes, motors and all kinds of things that operate at higher pressures and temperatures than a water block could even conceive. its cheap and is way more easily customizable to specifications as well as does the same job a rubber gasket does, just as well if not better in certain situations. the one downside is reusability, it doesn't really like to be reused, but I guess that's where the cheap aspect of the material comes into play.
@diotough

@@diotough paper gaskets like that arent standard printer paper, if you are applying the same force you would need to fully seat an o-ring it will be just fine. Not everything in a cnc machine is torqued, those applications i listed are just to show they are robust for dealing with heat and fluids That being said certain things like a waylube tank (an oil reservoir for the rails of your turret or table) are just acrylic with little m5 screws. i have seen many o rings and paper gaskets and i havent had nearly as many issues with paper gaskets. Whereas i have had many bad o-rings cause they have a nick in them or they dry rotted. idk the real answer to why they went with it, all i know is they deemed it was good enough and they seem like the people who know what they are doing.

Having worked as an automotive machinist, I still would prefer a raised lip and a matching groove to lock that thin paper gasket in. Also, the computer has to constantly deal with more drastic temperature fluctuations as it performs various tasks creating different amounts of heat. A car (especially a street driven one, not a race car) heats up and stays at a fairly stable temperature until it turns off again.

If the billet labs solution is cooler, then it would, in my opinion, be a valuable option for people wanting the best of the best. We have the i9, which we all know no one needs to play cs:go, but people buy it anyway. And the same goes for water cooling in general, it’s not needed to keep your gpu cool, it’s done as a choice, as a style. Maybe you know this, maybe it comes across in the video. But spending £500 more to get proper results would be something I would have expected from LTT

If you consider import fees they'd probably be about the same price. But yeah, it's a specialist premium product.

Hey man great point. I will add that there is the benefit (challenges too) with this product too. The whole point it being a mono block. You're saving on volume and the volume of the connection and tubing. So it's like entirely fair to pay more than the Ek offering.

I try to stay out of this kinda stuff, but auctioning off the one-of-a-kind prototype of a small start-up after they wanted it back while trashing talking their product is just completely inexcusable and really ought to receive a formal public apology.

realistically they couldnt get millions even if they wanted. They were likely only worth a few tens of thousands at most, and LTT probably has good lawyer money.

@@ramr7051 Yeah, I know... It's just like, well I've spent the last 14 months designing and building a prototype of my own for something I hope to patent. Basically *all* of my money (and I've been working 6 day weeks as a bricklayer as often as possible to get the money required) for most of that time and in my off time (today included) I design it, build it, solder, study physics/mathematics/electrical engineering. I had to learn CAD (Fusion 360) so I could get custom parts manufactured. I'm learning Verilog so I can program FPGAs because standard microcontrollers (arduinos, Raspberry Pis, etc) can't do what I need. The amount of work, money and passion involved in something like what those guys had at Billet Labs man... That wasn't just some chunk of metal for them, that was their life. I feel for those guys man. That's so fucked up and I don't really give a fuck if Linus cuts them a check now (he said he did on his forums), it's all ruined and fouled because of these incompetent assholes at Linus Media Group.

They're in the entertainment industry and all about getting paid. What I'd like to know is who paid them to trash this startup. I'm really thinking someone did to go this ham on a prototype. Maybe they're just that incompetent and don't know how to test anything, but if that were the case, no one would pay them to trash the startup. There is true evil afoot here. If it is just ineptitude, no one would pay them to destroy this small company. Occam's razor

What do you think of tracking down their monoblock, buying it back at whatever it costs you, and giving it back to Billet Labs as you should have done long ago? Sounds ethical
@TheBacktimer

What kind of startup is it that goes out of business over a review sample? Clearly they are selling it for 800€ to the public. To think that they would depend on a review sample sent to Canada seems a bit naive

Those gaskets are actually very good at doing their job. A downside is that they usually need to be replaced once you take it apart after its been used for a while. They are pretty common on cars where the throttle is attached to an intake manifold, or a water pump is attached to the block. They see much higher temps and pressures than you will ever see in a pc.
@hotdogsarepropaganda
@hotdogsarepropaganda 9 месяцев назад
you shouldk always replace a gasket if you open something. that's basic maintenance 101 from engines to plumbing, computer parts are no different. it would be like taking a CPU cooler of and reusing the thermal paste

To add, paper gaskets don't require an ultra smooth surface to seal on a material like copper. The copper will deform to seal on the gasket surface. Paper and copper gaskets are one of the oldest styles around. I'd have zero issue trusting it.
