Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

@@mmattmockus6963 I went to school in Inverness in the 1970s and 80s and was barely taught anything about Scottish History and even as recent as then, learning Gaelic was not a common thing in our schools, due to the fallout from the Highland Clearances and Jacobite rebellions (this last bit was what my Gran had told me growing up, as the 'stigma' for speaking Gaelic had been strongly enforced during her school years) and only some of the Western Isles folks still spoke it openly.

@mmattmockus6963 This is a classic ploy of colonisers...deny a nation it's own history, language, achievements, etc, superimposing the coloniser's own history, language, avievements, etc in their place and that way the risk of rebellion from the nation colonised or taking any form of responsibility for the atrocities/Genocide committed can be vastly reduced. England was excoriate in a UN study, in recent years, for the still ongoing abuse of the Scottish nation.

Pictish place names have a great similarly to Welsh - this makes sense because both languages are descended from the common linguistic language of common Brythonic.
@johnhopkins4012
@johnhopkins4012 11 месяцев назад
In the Welsh tradition it was the Scotti from Ireland who came to main land Prydain Britannia and it was the Scotti who asked for Welsh Brythonic Celtic wives. In fact if you look at the region of Pictland it is covered in Welsh Brythonic Celtic names and river names making the Picts Brythonic Celts. a Welsh archaeologist put this forward as it was pretty obvious from the local names which most others ignore because they do not know.

I watched a BBC programme recently where new archaeological discoveries in Pictish dwellings in the North pointed to a sophisticated civilisation with many objects that indicate their inclusion in much more international trade and far flung cultural exchanges than had previously been thought. Great, thought provoking video, and I loved the Nedius Plebious Glesgae diatribe no doubt from a compemporary edition of Abainn Bhaile-mòr.

Is it just me, or does that Hill fort look like all the walls were blown outward until no stone was affixed to another from the air? You can see the denser concentration where the residence was. The long pile where the donjon fell, the gatehouse, even the gap in the rubble where a breach would be for someone to enter to destroy it? Take Warwick Castle and put it on top of a hill and then blow it up like a Lego construction with a stick of dynamite. It would look the same!

Thanks for highlighting the complexity of the Pictish story. I think that this complexity probably exists in other societies as well. An analogous situation is demonstrated in North America when the populations of indigenous peoples is examined. The same is also true in detailing the peoples of Africa.

I've heard 'Picts' but never really had a clue what (or who) it meant. Celts? Vikings? Norsemen? The more I learn, the more I want to know. And one thing I'm finding out is: to define what time period we are talking about. And who is telling the story. As we know, the winners write history. I'm also realizing where some of the stereotypes I'm familiar with as an American are coming from. Thanks for the education
