So, who makes the best Variable Speed Pump? I get asked this question often and the answer is cut and dry nor black and white. It is based more on some factors that you need to consider before making the choice on a Variable Speed Pump (VS Pump).
Pentair was the first with their IntelliFlo VS pump and it is still the benchmark pump because there are just so many of them installed in backyards. When they first came out many thought they would never catch on and the first generation of the IntelliFlo did have a few issues. In the beginning, I didn’t like them much myself and thought it was a fad that would fade away. Now many states like California and Arizona require you to install one once your standard single speed pump needs to be replaced.
So, Pentair being the first makes it the best, right? Not exactly, but you can’t go wrong with a 3 HP IntelliFlo VS pump. It features a great price point and is super reliable. The menu can be challenging to understand but it has a long track record and is tough to beat. The flow rate of the IntelliFlo VS is also excellent and if you choose to go with Pentair you are making a very solid choice.
I will say that one factor to consider when you have an automated system already installed is to go with the VS pump that matches the brand of your automated system. The only exception is the Jandy Aqualink which is compatible with the Pentair IntelliFlo VS. But in most cases, if you have Hayward Automation, go with a Hayward VS pump. If you have a Jandy Aqualink go with a Jandy VS pump. And if you have a Pentair Automated system go with the IntelliFlo VS pump.
Let me touch on the Jandy VS Pumps. These are very good pumps and feature Century motors that have a great track record in the industry. The only thing you need to note is that the Jandy VS pumps need a separate controller to work. If the pump is a stand-alone without an automated system you would need a JEP-R Controller or the iQPump01 to actually program and control the pump. These can be mounted separately from the pump on the wall for instance and the iQPump01 works over the internet so you can control the pump from anywhere. The flow rate is comparable to the Pentair VS pump and they also feature a 3 HP version. The Jandy VS pump is about as good as the Pentair IntelliFlo, it is like comparing BMW with Mercedes.
Hayward had a steep hill to climb with their VS pump drive failures from two years ago. They have extended the warranty on their VS pumps to 4 years if you have an older model to cover the drive issue. Their new VS pumps feature the Smart Pool Control which is the only thing that has saved the Hayward VS Pump line-up. With ta Hayward VS pump like the TriStar 950 and Smart Pool control you can control everything on your equipment pad that a stand-alone automated system can. You can turn on the heater, turn it to spa mode, turn on the lights and much more form your Smart Phone using the Hayward OMNI Logic app. They also off a 3-year warranty on their new VS pumps with the TriStar 950 sporting a 4-year warranty. So Hayward is back in the game with their VS pump lineup.
All of these pumps requires a 230 Volt set up which can be a drawback if you are running your current pump off of 115 Volts. The solution for this is to install the Pentair SuperFlo VS pump which has been designed to work with 230 Volts as well as 115 Volts. It is a 1.5 HP VS pump so it has plenty of power for your older pool set up and it is also very reliable. Hayward has also made the TriStar 950 with Smart Pool Control a dual voltage VS pump. So you can also connect the TriStar 950 to a 115 Volt set up. The pump will throttle down from the 3 HP rating to a 1.5 HP rating and work fine with your 115 Volt equipment.
The lines are a little blurred when it comes to picking the best Vs pump for your pool. You would want to match the VS pump to your current automation and if you don’t have an automated system and want one, the Hayward VS pump with the Smart Pool control is a great option. I wouldn’t say these three VS pump brands are equal but there is not much separating each VS pump from one another. Pentair, Jandy, and Hayward all make a quality VS pump so you will have to do your research and decide which one is the best for your pool.

For people wanting to get into vs pumps for less money, Century motor makes a vgreen vs motor that attaches to your pump head. It has a interface to program or connects to control panels.

Does a 3HP VS pump use more electricity? or Because you can lower the speed it is very effiecient?

Because you can use lower speeds, and it's much more efficient to move water slower over more time, you can save a lot of electricity and yet have a cleaner pool at the same time. Variable speed pumps, especially the Pentair Intelliflo are the most durable and efficient pool pumps available.

My DS Jandy is 2 yrs old and it seems now I can 'hear' it running while I did not when it was new. Should I be concerned?

Hayward variable speed pumps are junk. Every one fails. Their single speed pumps are great so not sure what the issues are. Jandy VS pumps are great but no controller is idiotic. Pentair Intelli-flo is good but the Sta-Rite Intelli-pro has more features, runs quieter and I've never seen any one fail.

Hayward had a issue when manufacturing the variable drives, the four bolts that mount the drive to the motor acts as a ground transfer from drive to motor. These bolts were not getting torqued to spec causing shorts on the drives. Hayward has addressed this. So they offer a 3 year warranty on the vs900 and 4 year on the vs950(best warranty in the game)

Jandy was the trash bucket at one point when they first came out. They have improved to become one of the best simply by buying out patents. The jandy vs pumps are a turn off for anyone without a rs system, they can however be ran as a single speed @ 2750 rpm. You do this by jumping from slot 1 to slot 3, and 2 to 4 on the comport on drive, then turn dip switch 1 and 3 on, on drive. When you do this, whenever the pump receives 240vac it will run at 2750 rpm. I've done this to keep people's pools going when their pcb takes a dump. Or they offer the iQ01 which is sorta a joke.

Intelliflo/intellipro are by far my favorite. I do not have a preference on either or as they are the same motor/drive. The body is what makes the difference in my opinion, if I am replacing a whisperflo, i will install a intelliflo for perfect plumbing line up. If I am replacing a sta rite pump, I will install the intellipro for perfect plumbing line up. If I am replacing any other pump, well time to do a lil more plumbing.

I have had a Pentair whisperflow since 2003, never , not once didi it have a single issue. But, it is now inefficient. Will replace it with a VS pump. Looking for a quiet one that costs around 800-900 US Dllrs... any recommendation?

If you purchase a Pentair Intelliflo VS pump, it should fit in exactly where the Wisperflo is - especially if your current pump is on unions that you can unscrew. But that is around $1,000. Depending on your pool you can go with the Superflo VS. I always think about the pump footprint for easy install but the Superflo will not match up with your current plumbing. Also, the voltage is important for the Intelliflo VS as it works on 230V and not on 115V. Jandy has a few new VS pumps with dual voltage and the Superflo VS is dual voltage.

I had a Hayward vsp3400 installed in 2014, every 3 years I have to replace the motor, going on number 3, is this common?

That is not normal at all. Maybe there is some type of electrical issue going on at your equipment.

I have a Hayward EcoStar (2.7 hp) who's drive just failed and I'm looking to replace the whole pump. I was going to go with the TriStar (2.7 hp) but after doing research I am wondering if we can get away with a lower hp pump? Our pool is about 13,500 gallons. I am thinking the previous owners got the higher hp because there were solar panels originally hooked up, which we have since disconnected. Can I get away with the Hayward TriStar (1.85 hp)? Or, at almost half the price, the Pentair SuperFlo (1.5 hp)?

Yes. go with a 1.5 HP VS pump. You don't need the 3HP. I've tested my pool with a 1 HP VS pump and now a 3 HP VS pump and didn't really notice any difference.

Depends on the size but a 1 hp VS pump should be fine.

That is a smart idea as it uses the same footprint. So very little replumbing is needed. I would go for the 3 hp model.

Hey my friend..we're getting all three done, new pump vs, new heater and conversation from clorine to salt...I have a friend who does pentair wisperflow-hes giving me a good installation and price with heater ...would that be ok to use with Hayward salt water system?

@@SPL I'm am going to go with pentair..but I don't know if I should do the ic 30 or 40..he's giving me a price for installation and system for the Ic40 for just 1100.00. Do I ask for the 30 since my pool is only 13500 max gallons or do the ic 40. Is it better to go bigger and. Have it work less? Do u have any recommendations. I read alot about the ic 30 and how frequently they go bad.

I'm in the market for a new VS pump. My state offers a $400 rebate. The Energy Star certification site that lists pumps by name doesn't appear to have been updated in at least a year, meaning newer models of pumbs aren't eligible for this benefit. Anyone have any intel on this issue? Also, what is the best time of year to buy a pump? Do they go on sale in the spring for example? Thank you.

I'm looking to go with a vs pump I found some generic Chines pumps, are they any good? and switch to SWG, I see people using a direct Chlorine pump, what's the difference? I'm looking to keep my maintenance as little as possible, Thank you

The chlorine pumps are good. For me I would purchase a brand with a presence in the USA. Waterway makes an inexpensive VS Pump and the Pentair Superflo VS is good for most pools unless it is larger than 20,000 gallons. That VS pump is priced very well too.

I would like to know which is better in performance, reliability ,and longevity. That's why I watched your video. The car analogy is not a good one. Al l.j 3 are not good. All 3 are popular but Lexus by far is more reliable and last longer the Mercedes and BMW. Therefore it's very unlikely the 3 pool parts makers pentair and so on are all reliable and good. There has to be one better then the other 2. Can you please make a video being more specific. Thanks.

I finally had a VS pump installed! Went with a Pentair superflo. I have a quick question about cleaning out the basket. When I turn the pump off, a majority of the leaves get sucked back into the suction pipes. Then when I restart the pump all the leaves shoot back in. So I'm never really able to fully clean the basket. My single speed pump never did this. Did the guy do my install incorrectly? Thanks for your help as always

This does not mean the install is bad. In fact it means the install was good. It's a sealed system. This sounds like a back pressure issue. When pumps are running back pressure is created between pump and filter(especially if filters are dirty). When the pump shuts off the water will backflow towards the pool. Here are some remedies, ensure your filters are clean, be sure solar is not activated when turning off pump, be sure spa mode and or spillway mode is not on when turning off pump. If you have solar ensure that the check valves have not failed as water draining from solar will do this as well. If all else fails, have a check valve installed on pump inlet.

I will never buy Pentair equipment again, after being a faithful customer for 30 years on pool equipment. Recently, I called Pentair customer services to check on the validity of a Pentair product n all I obtained was a bunch of lies or n wrong informations n also experienced an obnoxious treatments from Pentair customer service’s higher management person. Other than this, its 2 month warranty if you do not get a Pentair Installer to perform even a simple job of replacing a pump is an insult or a means to victimize customers to benefit its installers/dealers!

I switched to the pentair intellaflow VS a couple of years ago. At the same time I disconnected my booster pump for my pressure side cleaner and switched to a robot. The robot was a nightmare, I now have had a Polaris PB4SQ and a Polaris 3900 installed. The issue is now my 3900 doesn’t not receive enough pressure? Is this setup doable? If so, any ideas what is wrong?

Maybe the VS pump is not running at a high enough RPM for the Booster Pump. Try setting the VS pump to 3100 RPM when Polaris Booster pump is running.

Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To - SPL, I tried it. I don’t think my booster pump is switching on, I’m not sure how they hooked it up to the timer. I turn the main pump on at the control display on the pump and the booster should be turned on at the timer box, main circuit and 3rd load, nothing. I’m going have to have a tech come back out, third time. Thanks for for the help, it’s appreciated.

@@calivalley9056 How did things work out? Like you I’m not a fan of running my robot everyday, lot easier to do so with a pressure pump on a timer. Also looking at that Pb4sq.
