OK this is what happened to AKI. They joined up with WCW and EA in 2001 to make WCW Mayhem 2. WWE bought WCW and all future projects were cancelled. EA gave them 8 months to develop Def Jam Vendetta, then they made the sequel Fight for NY and Vendetta's prequel, FFNY: The Takeover on PSP. They also released Ultimate Muscle games on Gamecube and PS2. A couple AKI devs including Shunsuke Katsumata jumped to Yuke's and started working on their Gamecube games made in the style of the AKI games. (WWE Wrestlemania X8, XIX. Day of Reckoning 1 and 2 and their Japan-exclusive sequels Wrestle Kingdom 1 and 2) Geta, the director from the AKI games and a few other AKI devs (including Shunsuke Katsumata and Daichi Takeuchi) were gameplay and animation advisors on Yuke's AEW Fight Forever. AKI pitched a TNA wrestling game to Rockstar, but TNA ended up going with Midway who made TNA Impact. Samoa Joe and AJ Styles wanted Impact to be like AKI's Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 (which AKI released the same year as No Mercy but as Japan exclusive,) but Midway went in the complete opposite direction. AKI then changed its named to syn Sophia and started making Style Savvy games on the 3DS. Their latest game was Fashion Dreamer on the Nintendo Switch.

Ricky I don't know how far back you're trying to go back with the wrestling games but 2 games the play alot different are WWF Attitude, and also WWF War Zone for the PS1 they make you basically use semi-Mortal Kombat inputs for moves but it's a different experience... (There's a good chance you may hate those game)

The graphics isn't everything in a game it's the fun you have and the benefits from playing one game it's many options with early 2000 superstars and legends in their prime.

I’m surprised no one else has said this, but stronger grapples consist of holding down A, which builds up your special meter quicker. Tapping A to perform a grapple doesn’t really do much for your meter. And performing a special move, you have to hold down A for a strong grapple, then move your joystick around. That’s Nintendo 64 controls though.

To don your special you have to hold the grapple button which was a on 64 and hit the analog in any direction and you can taunt you increase your meter

The reason why you're opponent easily gains momentum is because you're using "weak grapple" attacks. For example, A followed by A, weak grapple move. Hold A followed by A, strong grapple move. Also the opponent doesn't gain momentum when using a B-button weak grapple.
