Netflix set the entire model up for failure. Delivering so much content on a subscription only is just not viable. Especially when they stopped offsetting it with rentals and buying and are forced to continue to offer bigger production releases and see less and less revenue gains as a result. They should have focused on making a platform not a streaming service. A simple storefront that has a small curated rotating library for subscribers and ultimately encourages buying movies to stream or download at your leisure. Then every production house wouldn't need their own platform and Netflix wouldn't be stuck between a rock and a hard place where all they can do now is anger customers by continuing to raise prices.

Warner's new CEO's strategy would have been smart "10 years ago". He disregarded the fact that people who live in the now can find casual viewings for FREE and of more variety online. Even more so, casual viewing and on-demand streaming don't match well at their core. The whole point of casual viewing is to turn the TV on and not give it a second thought, but on-demand streaming requires that you make choices yourself. On top of that you loose the passive diversity in programming with streaming. You can make a choice but then you're locked into that decision until you make a next deliberate choice. It's just not the same.

To this day, RU-vid Prime has the most content for the things I care about. Don't forget Curiosity + Nebula is also an excellent service for documentaries and a good tie for RU-vid documentary channels. Using the Peacock is a dumb choice. There is a REASON CBS All Access rebranded to Paramount+ The branding is in the studio name. Universal isn't just associated with the classic films and Franchises like Jaws, ET, Jurassic, Fast and Furious, Minions, etc But they are ALSO associated with theme parks. People go to Universal Studios as a theme park and vacation spot. They absolutely should have "Universal" branded into their streaming service, especially because they could tie in the word "universal" with their wide and all encompassing slate of films and shows.

Anyone that puts any thought into would know it's not the same and that today's model is better AND leads to much more quality content. Here are the reasons: 1. Old cable you had limited choices, usually only one actual cable option and one or two dish options. Today you can pick what you want 2. Old cable/dish had 1yr contracts and or setup fees so changing is expensive. Streaming is pay as you go an no setup fee so you can drop one and pick another at no extra cost. 3. Old method you had to pay for basic cable package first before you start paying for the upgraded channels like Comedy Central, AMC, etc. Then you have to pay extra for the premium channels l like HBO, showtime, Starz, etc. 4. The old method to watch all the content could cost you $100+ a month while with streaming , you can just pick 1 or 2 streaming services at a time for $10-$30 a month. Just watch the content you want for a few months then switch to new service. competition

Pretty good summation of the year in streaming. A few thoughts. Netflix: Time to stop acting like Facebook and start performing like Microsoft. That subscriber loss wasn't materially big. It was big because Netflix convinced venture capitalists and banks that it was really a tech company. It's market capitalization (the money it can sweet talk out hedge fund managers) is like 50x compared to a movie studio like Disney that market cam at like 5x. The drop in subscribers was seen as peak saturation. And the money flow (based on the idea there were still more subscribers to be found) started to dry up. Netflix will spend most of the incoming year figuring out what business it wants to be. Most likely finding a few solid reliables the way Microsoft stopped chasing being the young upstart and settled on a reliable operating system and necessary apps. Disney: 2022 was a party, 2023 comes the hangover. This year Disney definitely won the streaming wars. And it broke the bank to do it. But that success is not sustainable. Disney will want those big budge production values back on the big screen earning them money. And making the equivalent of 4 Marvel movies, 6 Star Wars movies and 2-3 Pixar/Disney Animated movies on a platform that can't generate a tenth the revenue of worldwide theatrical releases will force Disney's hand. (There's a reason why the Disney Channel never attempted an HBO style success story) Disney will go where the money is and for this year and next at least, that will be back in theaters. HBO: Honestly, I wish we could just skip to the end of 2024, when Zaslav has stripped WB for parts and sold the rest to VCs. It's just painful to watch. It amazes me seeing how much devastation reality tv has laid across the TV landscape and believe the high priest to that is the right guy in an age of streaming. Background watching is meaningless if there are no ads underwriting it. If you aren't selling Chia Pets or Laundry detergent or anything this model does not work. Zaslav will go down as the boorish monster who wrecked prestigious studio. And he won't even have a big payday at the end because there are few who will want to buy WB for the third time as it circles the drain. Paramount / Peacock: These two are far enough down the list and desperate enough they may actually put some effort into the streaming wars. They might take a chance on someone with vision or try something outside the normal conventions and strike gold. Paramount can't keep hoping Star Trek will be as big as Star Wars. And Peacock can't keep thinking Friends is as big as it was 25 years ago. Crunchyroll: Though not as big as the other platforms here, I think it deserves a mention. Its young adult demographic will soon be the envy of the legacy streaming platforms. Legacy streamers will want to copy the success with a demo that will be more tech savvy and more engaged. I also think it's seasonal 13 week approach will be appealing to streamers done with the monthly grind. I don't know if anime is on the verge of new heights or has already peaked, but I suspect a lot of Crunchyroll's playbook will be adopted by the bigger players.

The big issue with Crunchyroll, aside from the couple controversies that surround it, is that quality of service just isn’t great. Anime fans have had a decade of either picking Crunchyroll or piracy,. The only reason Crunchyroll has gained such a solid foothold in the anime market in spite of its lack of quality, is that they phrased the fact the they bought the rights to stream anime in such a way that it made it seem like Crunchyroll was a pillar of the anime community , being one of the few things that prevents the collapse of anime production itself. Personally, when I was in a period of time where I was watching a ton of anime, I would buy a Crunchyroll premium subscription, then I’d pirate the anime I’d want to watch separately. Paying my dues while also getting actual quality in return. As for the future of Crunchyroll, I foresee one of two things happening. Netflix and Hulu keep buying the rights to Anime titles and bully Crunchyroll out of the market, or a company like Disney buys Crunchyroll and absorbs them into its umbrella. As I touched on slightly earlier, lying about how much they”help” anime creators with their existence has soured Crunchyroll’s image in the eyes of their main demographic permanently and anime fans were never super enthusiastic about Crunchyroll in the first place. It’s possible that Crunchyroll outlives the demographic it burned its bridges with, but from what I’ve seen, the issues with Crunchyroll being a poor streaming service have remained exactly the same to this day. TL;DR Crunchyroll could be a big dog in a niche market, but they’re either too lazy or lack the initiative to do so.
@ben99ny69
@ben99ny69 Год назад
Crunchyroll has sort of a monopoly on the anime streaming market. Sure, there is Netflix, HiDive, and maybe Disney. But not only are most of the titles going to cruchyroll, but majority of the popular titles are on crunchyroll. People's thinking will be "I'll get crunchyroll to support the industry and watch most anime but pirate the few that interest me from other services". Netflix doesn't feel like a competitor because the several anime they release in a year are released differently than they would on crunchyroll. And no one gets netflix for anime.

The biggest issue for Netflix is that they've poised themselves as "the streaming platform", but that's not something that will ensure them being relevant in the future. If you don't have actual content that's tied to you, people will not follow you. And their strategy of one- or two-season offs is not going to ensure them being interesting. That's the difference and biggest menace from Disney: Between nostalgia and strong content brands, they're the strongest contender and even if Disney+ isn't bigger now, they will at the end top them.

I disagree. Disney has very targeted and specific IP. And because Disney has this squeaky clean image to maintain, they suffer from having to erase all complexity and depth from their content. If you're not a family with kids, or into superhero content, Disney has little to offer. Netflix on the other hand has more more adult oriented and wide ranging content. Which means it is likely that those that subscribe to Disney also subscribe to Netflix, and Netflix has better reach with wider audiences. Cancellation of shows is a result of over investment in content and spreading themselves too thin, once Netflix gets a grip on its future content strategy, I believe this will change.

ah yes, rings of power did poorly because lotr is not as relevant as they'd hoped and was a little too mined for content in the past no other reason why it could've possibly done badly

Haha yes, remember all the good LotR shows we have had over the past 20 years? Incredible right?

My VPN with Plex is winning! HBO has by far the best shows but Netflix has quantity and a lot of good foreign shows. Their US Netflix shows suck for the most part unfortunately.

I agree. It kind of sucks that you’re not gonna be spending as much money when you look at it that way, but I also think that there are some benefits there’s still so many streaming services. They’re still gonna be a tremendous amount of contact more than we’ve ever had before just maybe not as much relatively speaking as there is now. However, that will continue to grow because every year more and more shows and movies will come out. Also, I bet if it could also be that they will start to focus more on the last contact they have making it better because it’ll have to stand out more because there will be less content to bury lesser content, so equivalent of working out well either way the sheer amount of streaming services that I have I never have a problem finding something to watch it every year that they add hundreds of new shows and movies it’s just another year of stuff that I still have to play catch-up with

Older gamers will see exactly the same thing happening as what ended with the great MMO crash. Everyone wants to sell their subscription but people don't have money for all of them and the bubble will come crashing down. It's not IF but WHEN it will happen.
