Who Should Buy A 450cc Dirt Bike?

In this video i discuss the downfalls and benefits of owning a 450cc motorcycle. You should realize right away that the bike will feel much heavier than a two-stroke even though its actually lighter in many cases. Also, be prepared for flameout city if you start to do technical riding. I went down during this ride because it flamed out on me on a pile of rocks.The 450 dirt bikes are good for beginners who just want torque, heavier riders who need the torque, desert racers, and pro riders. I purchased mine for desert riding!

450 is just a perfect all around bike esp for peeps who live in the high mountain states where we have everything from trail hoping, high speed desert runs, mountain passes and best part about these 450 and 500 is trail hoping. I am considering getting a 450 or a 500 just because we end up doing one way in one out single tracks that require us to ride on the streets a lot in Colorado. great vid RR

I agree with your take on the 450. I had a 450x and it felt twice as heavy as my 2 stroke. Stay safe

Learned on a 110 no clutch, then the same day learned on a 2020 KX450.. Came home, bought a KLX300R... Then a month later bought my first street bike, a Suzuki SV650.. Love both of my bikes ! However, all my friends have 450's... I want one SO bad, but my mechanic said, "put 250 hours in on your KLX300 and THEN we can talk about getting a 450.." I understand what he's trying to do / teach me but, man I'm eager to buy one lol.

Good stuff! I think a 300 would serve you just as well as a 450 honestly. I like both bikes equally. The 450 is good for desert riding, but its kinda a pig when it comes to getting through the gnarly stuff.

Your evaluations IMHO are spot on. I’ve had a 450 Beta totally modded for 5 years and it’s only bout 50 rwhp and compared to my Husky 250tpi bike it’s heavier slightly. Open areas I love 450rr but super tight stuff I like the lower center of gravity of my two stroke nice to have choices!!!

Yeah, the 4 strokes feel so heavy compared to 2 strokes. So many moving parts and heavy feeling compression when you close the throttle. Takes some getting used to!

I prefer the less aggressive 450s on the trails, basically I don't need the top horsepower one to have fun. I ride a 2009 Suzuki RMZ450 with a Yoshimura RS4 Titanium exhaust and I love it. Perfect power. I have a street legal ktm 450exc and it feels more tame in every gear then the Suzuki but I prefer the Suzuki

As a heavier rider (220-230 lbs.) I love a 450F. Currently I have opted for a KTM 350SXF and don't notice a very big difference. Maybe a little easier to turn and maneuver.

Where are you getting your weight numbers? Everything I can find shows that two strokes are lighter when comparing a 450fx and 300tx until the tpi's came out. I've been a 4 stroke guy since the yz400f but after breaking my back my track riding days slowed way down and I started trail riding more I found the 450 to be a handfull. I rode a friends 17 TX 300 at the track and became a 2 stroke guy again. Now I have a 18 TX 300 it does good the few times I hit the track but the 450 was better. Now trail riding the tx300 blows the 450 away it feels 20lbs lighter lugs down lower than a four stroke could ever dream about. Unfortunately they ruined them with going to fuel injection in my opinion mainly because your depending on a battery now. Thank goodness Yamaha is still out there
@RacerRed
@RacerRed 4 года назад
These are KTMs weight numbers. They are the lightest bikes but they also show even lighter numbers because of the way they weigh their bikes. They say a ktm450xcf is 224, and a Husqvarna TE250 is 226. The actual weight of both these bikes is closer to 240.
@norton218
@norton218 4 года назад
So if you compared a 450 xcw-f weight to the te250 weight I'd bet the 250 is lighter as is the 300 XC vs the 450 XC. People are always trying to claim that there four stokes are lighter than two strokes and it's just not true when comparing equal equipment. Just one of my pet peeves. I do like your videos as we ride alot of the same areas keep them coming
@RacerRed
@RacerRed 4 года назад
norton218 At no point did i claim 4 strokes were lighter than 2 strokes. I said that my 450 was lighter than my 250 which is absolutely true. Maybe its your pet peeve because you have become so much a 2-stroke fan? I love two stroke as well, but i can admit that 4 strokes are just as light. Compare a 250 4-stroke ktm to a 250 2-stroke. Also, the only weight difference between bikes that you stated is a headlight/tail light as far as i know. Regardless, does 1 or 2 pounds really make a difference? There is no real weight difference between 2 and 4strokes anymore...
@norton218
@norton218 4 года назад
@@RacerRed let's compare ktm 250sx ktm claims 210 lbs. ktm 250 sx-f claimed weight is 218 lbs 8 lbs is alot of weight I never said YOU claimed that 4 strokes where lighter than two strokes. I said PEOPLE (a generalization) are always claiming 4 strokes are lighter which is not true and the reason it's a pet peeve of mine. I would bet if both bikes where weighed with all they're fluids and the same amount of fuel in each tank that your xc 450 would weigh 6-8 lbs more. Not because I'm a 2 stroke fan but because it's reality. I'm a dirt bike fan I grew up riding dirt bikes in the 80s here in Idaho both 2 strokes and 4 strokes. 2 strokes at that time where lighter and twice as powerfull. the AMA allowed 500cc four strokes to compete with 250cc 2 strokes. I then watched as the four strokes developed in the late 90's and early 2000s and seriously thought 2 strokes were dead as Honda, Suzuki, and Kawasaki quit making them. And they where dead to me from 99 thru 2016 they vibrated like crazy didn't have the torque of the 4 strokes. Then along came the counter balanced 2 strokes and the 2 stroke sprang back to life at least for me. No more valves ,cam chains , no more changing the oil every 3-5 hrs, and getting paranoid at 100hrs that my bike was going to blow up soon. Top end jobs went from 400-600 bucks depending if you needed valves and new seats cut to 180 bucks for a 300 rebuild
@RacerRed
@RacerRed 4 года назад
norton218 Why even mention bike weights if you weren’t upset about what I said in this video? I get it, though; 2 strokes are still slightly lighter. They feel much lighter though. I had to race against 250 four strokes during my last few seasons of serious racing as a kid. It wasn’t even possible to keep up on a 125 anymore. I still enjoy riding two strokes more, but four strokes are better in so many ways. I have never hurt a four stroke engine and I have run the crap out of a yz250f and a CRF250R. Never did anything other than regular maintenance on either bike...

I'm a 4 stroker for life. Had a kx80, kx250 and kx500 with 529 kit but when I switched to a 450 I knew there was no going back for me. I did switch to a yz450fx for the wide ratio trans. Where were you in this video? Little dusty? Still have snow down in the magic valley.

You can buy it but you shouldn't, imagine having a bus for your first car? you will never get to ring the neck of a 450. I still can't fully open mine up and would hate to have to learn the foundations on a 450, riding a slow bike at 100% can be more fun than riding a fast bike at 50% and you learn more. Get a pit bike for a first bike, easy to manoeuvre, cheap to buy and maintain, cheap parts and easy to learn general maintenance on, making a mistake on these is no big deal. Or a 85 / 125 2 stroke, very quick bikes and more than enough power to scare a novice. Always exceptions to the rule but this would be my advice.

It’s about how you are as a person, like if you are a wannabe Rossi and get a 1000cc bike it will not end well. Just have respect for whatever machine you are on and start to know your bike.
