We keep talking about Iceland in 2016 being an 'all time low'. And okay, let's say it was. Do the media not realise that if it weren't for an OVERHEAD KICK in the 94th minute deep into injury time, this 'much better' team with a 'much better culture' would have gone out of Euro 2024 against SLOVAKIA?! At the exact same time as we lost to Iceland in the last 16! if not for Bellingham's moment of individual brilliance (which is also over-hyped), we were out. Gone. Bye bye. And that would have been well-deserved because despite all this amazing Southgate 'culture' Slovakia looked like they wanted it more than we did! Southgate's England have NEVER beaten a team they shouldn't. I know football isn't played on paper, and I accept and respect the fact that you still have to do the job. But my God we were awful in this tournament. I mean, seriously bad. Barring 30 minutes against Serbia and 45 against the Dutch, we played Roy Hodgson level football. And back then we didn't have Foden, Bellingham, Rice, Mainoo. The list is endless. With the possible exception of an out of sorts Germany in 2021, Southagate's England have beaten no one of note since 2016. Literally, no one. And the moment we come up against half decent sides, we lose every single time. Croatia, Italy, France and Spain. He hasn't had to play the likes of Brazil, Germany and the Portugal we lost to under a previous 'golden generation'. And that's why Kane has so many goals, too. He's not better than Rooney. He's just bagging goals against San Marino and Slovenia. Southgate should have left after failing to beat an OAP Italian side in the final on home soil after being 1-0 up in two minutes. That was levels of failure even the FA should have been ashamed of. But I guess £5 million a year is hard to turn down. That's why I respect this decision now because the FA wanted him to stay until America '26. Let's just hope someone can come in and build on his foundations...

So true. And people also seem to forget that Slovakia almost scored a 2nd goal from the half way line after a horror square pass to Stones who wasn’t even looking in his direction. Absolute school boy stuff. And if Denmark had scored against Serbia, we would have played Germany in the round of 16 and got stuffed. Don’t let this run to the final fool you everyone! This tournament had a sprinkling of moments from Bellingham, Saka, Watkins, and Palmer but held back by a coach that always wants to play back foot, cautious, pragmatic football.
@mattthompson4836
@mattthompson4836 Месяц назад
@@gaving9041 -- I can't believe I forgot that open goal 'miss'. Maybe I blocked it out because I'm a Liverpool fan. Haha. Quansah did the same thing in the QF of the FA Cup and then Bruno lobbed the keeper from near the halfway line. Still sickens me. Ha. And you're right. Germany would have pumped us. Gareth got sooooo lucky with draws in tournaments and I won't forget it. Because if Potter or Howe come in and lose to a France in the last 16 after a tough group, I bet a good portion of people will be saying "Gareth got us to finals!" Yeah. By magically avoiding all the big boys. But the second we met them it was clear we had inferior tactics and lost every time.
@gaving9041
@gaving9041 Месяц назад
@@mattthompson4836 yeah Quansah did it in open play and Walker did it on a dead ball. Amateur stuff. I wanted Southgate out after fumbling the Wembley final. Italy were there for the taking. Both their center backs rode off into the sunset after that game and we barely got at them because Southgate persisted with his back 5 and only brought on Rashford and Sancho in garbage time to take penalties. No front foot, proactive coaching.

@@gaving9041 I've watched a lot of these types of media shorts today and honestly, I don't think they know us fans at all. Me and my middle-aged buddies still enjoy re-runs of Euro '96 and Italia '90. And we won naff all! I don't know why they think we 'demand' to win every World Cup and Euros. Maybe some do, but the majority of us want entertaining, attacking, kiss-the-badge, passionate, and leave-every-ounce-of-your-heart-on-the-pitch football. And with the talent we now have, winning the trophy would be a happy byproduct of playing that type of footie. It would have to be with the players we have. Of course winning Euro 2024 was the ultimate goal of any coach, but to be honest I don't think Southgate would have deserved an inevitable knighthood just because he beat one really good team out of seven (and even the Spain we played this year aren't the Spain of old!) You have to win A LOT of trophies to get away with playing ultra-pragmatic football. That's the only reason Chelsea loved 'The Special One' so much. 1-0 wins you leagues, but its definitely for the purists. The whole nation watches international tournaments, not just footie fans. All those people were bored 'sh*tless' this year. 🤣🤣 They just want drama, passion, entertainment and something to 'get behind'!

I wouldn't want Eddie Howe at this point because I would have serious doubts about the intelligence of a man who leaves a better paid job, where he has 3 more years on his contact, who is respected by his current employers and has a great relationship with the fans, who has been given a really exciting project and a huge budget to build it, but has relatively little pressure to win things quickly, and decides to sack all that in and take the England job, where the last manager quit because he was worn down by the constant and often repugnant animosity aimed at him, because he only took England to a major final again. If Howe takes it, the first step for the FA should be giving him a CT scan.

He may even have won it against the guy who just took Spain to the euros title in the final and if i remember rightly he had England playing front foot attacking football with a rock solid defense so don't be so quick to look for the big headline boss coz this Spanish guy who's just won with Spain has proved that a guy who's been part of the system who knows the players can be successful.

For me, there 're 2 issues, Southgate as a 'manager' raised the barm possessed good general; management skills, but as a 'coach' , his experience at championship Middlesboro did not provide him with the requisite skill set in elite tactical international coaching. If you have a gtoup pf p[layers of low skill level, favouring a very defensive game plan is the way to gom but when you have superstars more or less in every position, the hyper risk averse tactic is never going to work against good teams. On the issue of replacementm of course we'd all like to see another Englishman take up the challenge, but currently as you say there remains a dearth of talent and it would be crinminal to squander the embarassment of riches on the field by appointing another incompetent/inexperienced head coach simply due to nationality. in 5 or 10 years time, the right English candidate may emerge and then you can sack Klopp...

I've been a Liverpool fan since the early 1980s. But let's be honest. Even if the FA would pay the big bucks to tempt Klopp to take on the role, he freely admits he doesn't 'win' finals. He lost 3 out of 4 European finals with Liverpool - irritatingly ALL to Spanish clubs (Sevilla in Europa League final in 2016 then the CL Final to Real Madrid twice). He also lost the Champion's League final with Dortmund. I love the guy more than my wife (joke! sort of!) -- but he doesn't win finals and would cost too much. We would score lots of goals and it would be exciting because we'd concede a few as well... but then we might end up with the same results as Gareth gave us. Please can the English media stop crediting Southgate with improved results, no previous England coach has inherited such a deep pool of talent. To put it in perspective and context England at youth level for past 148 years only won 2 youth Euros in their history. In the last 6 years England have won at youth level 2 world cups and 4 youth Euros, not only unprecedented success in England’s 156 year history, this is unprecedented success in such a short time for any nation in the world, which proved England had world best talent in several age groups. England had more champions league winners under 30 in their squad, than any other team in the euros. People need to understand the talent Southgate was working with where his 7th and 8th choice central defenders play for Milan and Bayern. Where players like Grealish, Maddison, Sancho are not selected and they are not really missed and these players would walk into many other national teams. The English media are missing the context by praising Southgate for better results. It is the foreign media who are being more accurate in their assessment of Southgate, where he is viewed as not only an utter failure, but also one of the worst coaches in international football. They feel it takes a special kind of bad coaching to take team with the most attacking options of any Squad and have them play slow, defensive low block football with them. It is a crime against football.

No more scrutiny on any manager anywhere than the England job? How about the Man Utd job? Graham Potter doesn't have the credentials to go in there and command the respect of the players? What credentials did Southgate have? Relegation with Middlesbrough.

Not surprising that English commentators would assume that top managers would choose England over the US. They swing between abject self-loathing and arrogance so quickly that if you weren't used to it it'd make you dizzy. Fortunately for both the US and England there are several good choices, and neither of us can grab them all 🤣 But when Ogden was talking about Potch he can't help taking a dig at the US saying that there's no pressure... "they get out of the group stage and it's a success". If he believes that he doesn't understand us *at all.* I want to meet England in a knockout round 😁
@maudalmusicalmachines3541
@maudalmusicalmachines3541 Месяц назад
Seriously though, it's pretty interesting how parallel the journey is for England and the US at the moment. One difference though - our coach was even worse than yours 😂 In the end, Southgate at least was gentleman enough to resign. Berhalter is such a narcissist he had to be fired.

@@redmed10 exactly, If English, has to be: Eddie Howe or Carsley. If non-English: Klopp (though doubtful he would ever take, as he wants to relax, so no idea why his name is being constantly thrown into the mix). No way Lampard, Rooney or Gerrard. They have poor man-management and inter-personal skills. No way: the Argentian Pochettino. He comes across as a bit of an opportunist. Plus, an Argentian manager would be a kick in the teeth. i actually think no manager would of gotten this team to beat this current spain regime in its current state, lots of excellent talent playing as individuals instead of a team. I suspect there is a lot of discontent in this group of players including the subs not being admitted to pubicly and gareths resignation is a big clue on the exact relationship between them all...good luck to whoever succeeds england they will need it.

Lol. "The US job is a no pressure job. you get out the group and you're successful." No it's not the pressure of England. But the Berhalter just got fired so there is pressure. And Every US manager get's out of the group at the World Cup. The expectation is not just get out of the group. The expectation is to beat a real team in the knockout round. Like they failed to do against the Netherlands. Like they failed to do in Brazil against Belgium. That is the expectation. I'm not gonna argue that job is bigger or more scrutiny than in England. That would be crazy. But you are clueless about what the expectation is and saying it's a "no pressure" job. On home soil there is immense pressure. With a Copa America on our soil & euros on tv the next US manager has been the biggest football topic going. England pressure? No. But you're wrong on what is expected and there is pressure.

I'm not really sure why they keep offering up mediocre English candidates and we just have to accept that Britain just don't produce well trained coaches. it's a combination of lower level, affiliated UEFA courses being offered in this country and that basic, linear, English perception, which struggles to understand all the details contained within modern football.

I've been a Liverpool fan since the early 1980s mate. And yes, this is the first and last time I ever use Klopp's and Southgate's names in the same sentence.
