He is absolutely amazing and so humble too.

I'm from Rotorua New Zealand, (Geyser City)...Tamoko are done as was in the old days, its still a ritual, and i must admit, Stan's Tamoko is truly beautiful, his tone has changed a lot since his Idol days in Australia, with the journey he has undertaken his tone has depths, soul, and carries that Mana feeling in his lyrics... bringing all the elements together. Stan filmed this video in less than 3 weeks, with zero budget. Just him, a friend a couple of cuzns and a camcorder. This was filmed literally in his backyard where his tribe is from. Apart from the maunga (mountain), which is where his wife is from. The scenes are real places in, NZ.

Stan is amazing artist. Check his older "New Takeover". Definitely his cover of "Ultralight Beam". Also "New Light" is also moving. His most recent "Māori Ki Te Ao" has cool island feel. He battled stomach cancer and had his stomach removed! He wasn't even sure he'd be able to sing the same afterwards but he has remained amazing ❤👍

New sub here also. I'm from New Zealand and I love how our culture music is being reacted to from all over the world. We're also trying to keep our culture and language alive in our own country. Unfortunately we have majority of New Zealand Europeans trying to get rid of it. Not only that is happening at the moment. It has only just starting a movement towards this current Government. We've just got over 1 million Māori here in (Aotearoa) New Zealand. We just want to be included in all decision making that includes us all here equally. New Zealand’s North Island is very volcanic. Where you saw Sam standing on rock, was an area of volcanic rock with active geothermal activity. Our bush (forest) is very lush, thick and very green.

Stan’s music is awesome, he has stayed true to who he is. You should watch the doco on his when he went through cancer struggle…he now sings without a stomach. New Zealanders have huge respect for what he Stan’s for, a nice person.

Stan is a really beautiful human being who’s overcome a lot including a recent bout of cancer. He lost his stomach due to that. He’s got an incredible voice & is a true artist in how he expresses the lyrics. He’s a proud Māori & yes, those tattoos reflect his culture & are real. Someone kindly put a translation of the Māori part of the song. Like Native American peoples, Māoris consider humans to be stewards of the earth/the Earth is our mother & we pass our origins down to subsequent generations. We’re not doing a great job of protecting the legacy of our beautiful environment. We need to do much better by our children.

These are all places I’ve been to over my lifetime and the geysers and pale stone are likely in Rotorua and or Taupo in the volcanic areas. In the movie scenes that sculpture where she touches the stones I’m pretty sure is in Germany and is a monument to holocaust survivors.

New Sub. I am a stan of stan LOL Loved your guy's reaction. Stan mentioned in an interview how he grew up watching 'The Avatar' and loved the character Ang. The tattoo is influenced from it but has a more Traditional and deeper meaning. Stan is very creative and is very intentional with every song and video he makes (Lyrics, Traditional attire, scenes etc). It is made with pure love and respect for our culture, but it is also music that empowers and inspires all people Internationally. Stan is Māori from Aotearoa (New Zealand) this waiata (song) was for the movie Origin. His Kirituhi or Tā moko (Tattoo) is real. His trinkets are called Taonga either carved from bone usually whale but more beef bones these day, and the greenstone is called Pounamu.

Lots of great info in the comments. Just to add, parts of NZ are covered in rain forest. No jungle in NZ; it is a bit far south for that (too cold!). The Eastern and Central parts of both islands are now more open country than when the early Polynesian settlers (Maori) cut and burnt all the trees which originally grew there. They did so to hunt one of the largest/heaviest birds ever to have lived, the (flightless) Moa bird, which became extinct within 100-150 years of Maori arrival (around 1300 {Medieval times in Europe}). Something like 6 or 7 million hectares had been cleared of bush and forests prior to Europeans arriving in NZ. (early 1800's). The Haast's Eagle (the world's largest ever eagle) also went extinct, since Moa were its main source of food. The rats they brought with them may have also contributed to that loss. Both clearing and extinctions continued after Europeans arrived and are still going on to this day.

He actually watched the movie and this song is the result of the movie, he is a full Maori born in Australia but now living in New Zealand with his family and yes the tattoos are real it represents his Whanau his iwi (Family and tribe) he is acknowledging his ancestors. The places you see are actually his home land around his home.

You should watch #stanwalker STAN WALKER DOCUMENTARY about his battle with stomach cancer. You will get to know what an incredible man he is. He now has no stomach after major surgery and had to learn to sing all over again completely retraining his diaphragm with no stomach to support it. Also please watch Stan’s version of Ultralight Beam (Kanye). It’s amazing ❤️👍🏼

Those "trinkets" are called taonga. They all have meaning and it takes real skill to carve bone and jade (also called taonga) into those shapes. He has a shark tooth and a tiki comb, supposed to be worn to hold your hair in a top knot... Stan is a bit bald for that clearly! But yeah, wearing these indicate things about the wearer including their Mana (kind of like status but so much more than just status...) Maori is a beautifully intricate language and culture.

Re the tattoos on ouchy places, some people have held onto the tradition of getting their genital region tattooed. I don't personally know any men who've had it done but I do know quite a few women with tattooed private parts. That's done with a single handheld needle and isn't tapped in with another implement, it's done one tiny puncture at a time. I believe there are other parts of the Pacific where this is a tradition, not just with Māori or even Polynesians.
