The first episode of the Irish version of Who Wants to Be A Millionaire, originally broadcasted on RTE One back in 2000.
Presented by Gay Byrne of The Late Late Show fame.
With thanks to KillianM2 and molloyg for the reupload.
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? (Ireland) belongs to Tyrone Productions and Sony Pictures Television, in association with RTE. I own nothing!

From the United States, home of the late, Regis Philbin, we salute the late and wonderful Gay Byrne, of this show, and RTÊ’s The Late Late Show. He was a fabulous and kind-hearted man, on TV and off. He will always be missed, dearly, just like Regis.

i was wondering if he had died but it was kinda clear with his age and the date of this. i grew up with the late late show, my mom met him and said he was so nice. i didnt know he did millionaire, i left ireland with 19yo. i love that there are a couple of episodes on youtube, its fun watching

Not surprised the Irish version was short lived. No way RTE could afford the prize money with such a small audience for advertising purposes.

It’s so weird to see Ireland was still using “punts” back in 2000. Also Gay Byrne was perfect for WWTBAM just like Chris Tarrant🇬🇧, Regis Philbin🇺🇸 and Eddie McGuire🇦🇺.

They were the men who always made “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” very memorable, in their countries, as well as Robert ten Brink🇳🇱 in The Netherlands.

Lucky them, if i remember correctly 1punt (dont have punt on my german laptop) was €1.27. So the win went down when EU converted.

Greetings from the USA! I just want to say that it's too bad that the Irish version didn't last long. The highest winner was Roger Dowds with 250,000 Irish pounds, and as far as I know, the show never aired when Ireland started using Euros.

Exactly like the USA, s version, with the questions relating to Ireland. In the USA the show was brought back 3 times. First with Regis Philbin, Meredith Vieira then Chris Harrison. Sure wish it could be brought back. Not known how long this version went ( Ireland) but would love to see more. Thank You for posting.

Yep, Ireland used to have the same currency name as in the UK... but nowadays it's now stated as Euro since the beginning of 2002.

Some of the earlier questions though. In the UK and US ones, they give one daft answer, not three.

The cash prize was *really* massive for the time for an Irish show, obviously it always was for WWTBAM but a lot of international variants didn't even try to come close to a UK£ million in their currency. I think RTÉ were relieved nobody ever won it before the euro came in (which was worth less number by number), I don't think any game show we've done since has come anywhere close even including inflation.

No, it's a different Irish person named Des O'Connor and he looks a bit young compared to him. The Des that we all know was actually in the UK but his father is a Irish decent.
