Thank you, for remembering this honorable Jewish man who faced so much adversity and yet did so much. I just found 15 ebooks by him online. I already downloaded one about The Jews of Old Porto (1929). Just yesterday I found another interesting Jewish man with Portuguese origins though he was born in USA: Salomon Nunes de Carvalho. He was a a painter, a pioneer photographer and a draftsman. He was part of the team that explored the territory to prepare the construction of the first transcontinental railway in USA.

Brilliant. I only wish I knew about Jewish life in Porto when we visited there for a medical reason in 2018. It was a wonderful visit in any case, and we heard from several people there about אנוסים there.

Please encourage everyone to watch the 2019 film Seferad by Luis Ismael about Captain Basto! So pleased you're discussing him! 👍

Thanks for sharing. Jewish military personnel of WWI is a fascinating topic. For example, I would love to know more about Feldrabbiners. I appreciate your videos very much.

Weird synchronicity - I just heard that Hebrew etymology of marrano the other day on the St. Augustine Jewish Historical Society channel. That translation of (is it rosh pinnah?) verse 'chief cornerstone' I think is a weird translation of pyramidion.

I feel sad because in Brasil they don't let us to return, even if we pass through a kosher converting procces to confirm our history as Jewish descendents. I am trying to return to my roots about 4 years with my husband and kids (he is also descendant, Oliveira Lima). It's very hard for us. My father have Sefaradi passport as Portuguese citizen. Azores. In my father's tree we have a collection of victims certified by the CIL as Sefaradi. In my mother's I have Antônio Bicudo Carneiro. It makes me sad and proud at the same time, because I know that at some instance I am Jewish, even If it's 'just' in my soul. Thank you very much!
