Allan "Rocky" Lane (1909-1973) was a famous western star.
He played "Red Ryder" in several films.
Then, as westerns faded, so did his fame.
But in 1961, when the producers of a new show about a talking horse heard his voice...
...they knew they'd found their "Mr. Ed."
Rocky would continue in the role from 1961-1966.
I neither own nor claim any rights to this material. Just having some fun with it. Thanks for watching!

My theory is that Mr. Ed actually did talk, and the studios made up this nonsense that someone dubbed the voice because they didn't want to shock people. Am I right?!!!!

Lane has no choice but to take the role of Mr. Ed; B-Westerns had become history as far as movie westerns were concerned, plus, television had overtaken films as a popular form of entertainment. Besides, Lane couldn't stand television at all, since he considered it "the idiot box." Lane was also a very proud actor who felt that shows like Mr. Ed were beneath him, but he had to take the role of Ed because he needed the money(he had been out of work for a few years). And, many western film fans recognized his voice upon hearing it, which caused Lane to be embarrassed about the role. Mr. Ed(1961-66), sad to say, was his last role as an actor.
