Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, formerly a feared adversary of the Arab states that surrounded and made war upon Israel, ultimately became the very symbol of peace in the last decade of the twentieth century. “One does not make peace with one’s friend,” he famously said, “one makes peace with one’s enemy,” an attitude that resulted in the ill-fated Oslo Accords of 1993 and, tragically, in his 1995 assassination at the hands of a Jewish extremist. Rabin’s life was inextricably bound with the relationship of Israel and its Arab neighbors.

Just from listening to your lectures I realized it's Jewish tradition to argue anything and everything amongst each other 😁😁😁😄😄😅

One more comment, Rabin was not Minister of Defense but Chief of Staff in 1967. Eshkol was MoD, until replaced by Dayan on the eve of the Six Day war in an emergency cabinet meeting, because of Eshkol's lack of military experience (which is why at the time, Rabin had almost free reign to make any defense decision necessary, but he was not actually officially MoD until 1984)

Loved your talk .What role did General Mickey Marcus or Michael Stone have in finding and building the alternative road to Jerusalem ? BTW Michael Stone would be a great person to give a lecture on he was a mensch .

Correction - Rabin was chief of staff in 1967, not Minister of Defense

As a short note, you mentioned the Palmach was absorbed into the Haganah which was then absorbed into the IDF. Of course the second part was true but the "Plugot Machatz"- or strike force, was just the commando wing of the Haganah, it never existed separately to then be absorbed by the Haganah. Fantastic lecture- phenomenal job describing a great man in one hour.

A very interesting lecture that provided me with some background information on Rabin that I didn't know - thank you. I guess I'll have to learn about Jabotinsky now to understand Rabin. Of course it is a puzzle to this gentile to make sense of 'the secular Jewish identity' - which I know is very common but I wonder what the driving force behind it is. What problems do secular Jews have with assimilation and what does being a 'secular Jew' mean? As always, thanks for your informative and engaging presentation.

keep up the good work Professor Henry -i'm an Australian fan! a few quick questions please: 1/ Yitchak Rabin was he or wasn't he the Palmach commander that fired onto the Altalena ship resulting in some Jewish people being killed lezrenu.? 2/ Was Yitzchak Rabin was the Israeli Defense minister who approved and took responsibility of the famed operation to rescue the passengers kidnapped in Entebbe Uganda. Yitzchak Rabin was Chief of Staff during The Six Day War.? 3/ Rabin's efforts when he was Israeli ambassador to USA led to a modernization of the Israeli Army with more modern equipment flowing to the Israeli IDF? 4/ Did Yitzchak Rabin in his later days before his tragic assassination totally misread Arafat's real agenda? I would love to know clearly what you think Pr Henry.

points of information: The 1977 elections in Israel were called as a result of the vote of no confidence resulting from the arrival of the F15 planes close to Shabbat. Rabin was the head of the Labour party candidate for Prime Minister, however he was forced to stand down as Labour candidate when his wife's US bank account was discovered The law preventing Israelis from having foreign bank accounts had been in force for years and was not connected to the hyper-inflation which only took place in the late 70's early 80's after the Likud party had taken power in 1977. Ironically the law was repealed about 6 months after the Likud took power , it was a few years later the hyper -inflation , that you mentioned took place .

:) i have been watching all of your lectures. I did not really know the history of israel. i was there for the first time this summer. now it is very difficult with people my age, you are aware. the your lectures are proving to be so valuable in these times where we are constantly being gaslit by our peers. they simply do not understand how many missed opportunities for peace there have been and you elucidate this history so nicely. @@HenryAbramsonPhD

To this day the surviving sailors from the USS Liberty would describe the incident/attack very differently.

Exceptional lecture as always. I'm sorry a man so scholarly and wise doesn't know Arabic? I'm thinking wouldn't it be bbn prudent to totally understand those who oppress you?
