Druid Priestess by Emma Restall Orr is an excellent introduction to what a druid does. Anything by Philip Shallcrass or Philip Carr-Gomm is also good. You could also watch the videos on Philip Carr-Gomm's channel, which include some wonderful interviews with druids.

Yes, it does. I am druid. I love the books listed, I would like to add ...anything by Ronald Hutton. I have Blood and Mistletoe...my next purchase will be Pagan Britain. Also add Larisa Whites newly published World Druidry and anything by Kristopher Hughes. I have Kristophers' Celtic Magic and it is similar in spirit to Pennies The Path of Druidry, yet distinct. I plan to get his newest Cerridwen Celtic Go9ddess of Inspiration just published and Natural Druidry. I began as a Natural Druid, grew into a Hedge Druid and am now studying with BDO. I also love TDN/ The Druid Network It was my first join up in terms of Druid Organizations. Eventually, I hope to study with OBOD as well. It seems many people study with more than one group. I think, it's a brilliant way to experience the universality of Druidry and it's Awen.I love druidry and it comes very naturally to me. Enjoyed your video presentation. I thought it was a very nice introduction. Blessings...

For starters, druidism isn't for anyone wanting it, if you don't share the blood line, you have no right to be a part of it. Not only does it dishonor my ancestors or the gods, but it dishonours the individual posing to be a druid. It takes 20 + years to become a druid and commit to memory (through poems) the way of my ancestors. I am a descendant of the Iceni Tribe, who once lived where modern day Norfolk, England is today. My parents were born in England and I live in Maine. Scarlet, druidism calls to the individual and you either accept it or you don't. You are Anglo-Saxon by blood and rightfully deserve your place in druidism, but please heed to what you teach so no one is being misguided. You are a beautiful woman and intelligent. There is a book by: Peter Ellis called "The Druids". I strongly suggest it to you. He speaks of fact only and puts others on blast who speak out of place, defending the Druids. My name is Rythorian Ethrovon, I'm in my early 40's and live in Maine. If you ever want to reach out to me, I would love to have discussions with you about druidism. Morrigan and Andrasta are my deities. There is no greater honour than nature itself, the gods and honouring those who share these beliefs. As druids, we must all treat each other as family. I am a computer programmer/Tattoo artist and build advanced websites. If you are ever in need of any of those, my services will be free to you. My email is: Ethrovon@gmail.com you are welcome to reach out if you so choose. Merry meet merry part merry meet again

@wanderer965
@wanderer965 3 года назад
@Shadow Wolf Do you have some links to provide because you said a lot of stuff that I can't find research about, like for example I find stuff about mass graves but it says it's controversial if it was sacrificial or not. And none of this seems related to the so called survival of druidism either. Also I still don't see the problem with the quote in my first comment, which was reported by the greek author from early IIIrd century Diogene Laertius ; are you saying he made it up or something ?
@taffy9966
@taffy9966 2 года назад
@@wanderer965 I'm struggling to understand your first comment too tbh and what it has to do with the survival of druidism or whatever you mean by that you made three quotes that suggested that's how they based their lives on when it fantasy in my opinion the druids hurt a lot of people in their time human sacrifice was a big deal to them like the old croghan man bog bodies with ropes around their arms and legs still in good we'll persevered condition even after 3000 years proving un involuntary human sacrifices you got wicker men sacrifices also don't romanticise the druids they where pretty brutal people with a lot of power in their community would have been a pretty scary time living around them back in them times that's for sure
@wanderer965
@wanderer965 2 года назад
@@taffy9966 You need to make sentences, you're exhausting to read. I won't answer another comment written like that. I'm not the one who said sacrifices were linked to the survival of druidism, ask Lady Shadow Wolf about it. I already answered her about the validity of the human sacrifices hypothesis. Concerning the quote, as I also told her already, it's from Diogene Laertius who was an early IIIrd century greek author. If you all disagree with what he says, that's fine, say he lied, that you know better than him or whatever you want but I didn't made that up. I simply added a complement of info to the video. Quoting someone for the sake of sharing info is not romanticizing even if it doesn't fit the vision you all have of the druids.

@Lady Shadow Wolf I can see this has meaning to you. I agree in the sense that no one should claim to be a Druid, but at the same time, in my opinion, no one should claim any title to begin with. Regardless, I understand there are titles for a reason. The original Druids no longer exist; this is true. I suppose it does not have the same affect on me as it does you when someone claims to be a Druid. I will say however and to be fair, that I would not give someone credit who claims themselves to be a Druid to begin with... but I get it.

The way you can become a druid is by learning ancient Celtic art. The answers that you’re looking for are in the bird Effigies. You look for a bird beak on one side, you look for a bird in it’s entirety on the other, and then eventually you will be able to see the profile pictures on the edges. The art is to be looked at over the shoulder as if you’re looking from behind into the side. It’s a portrait or profile picture. It’s just a lost art and I believe we can all learn to see this once again. Once we do we can understand language of the first people. What I learned is that people are not of the earth but they are the earth. We are connected to it because we are it… The line that defined the person walking on the earth disappeared. They were masters of nature because they were nature.

Look for me beneath the trees.. I love druids and druidry . I find it fascinating. Verbal lore back then was the way that worked best and I think they were afraid of if the information they had were to fall into the wrong hands. Equally today, you have the Mason's and even the boy scouts have secret societies within them.. I mean there is something behind not putting it into writing, but I would love to read or discover a library full of lore.

@LeoDiogenes

@Shadow Wolf It seems that an unbroken chain of succession is something that is very important to you, just as it is for Christianity. Perhaps your latent Christianity is a chain you havent broken yet? To say what you said about me and my practice implies a dualistic way of thinking. If you step back and look at what little we know of ancient druidry and you compare it to modern druidry, you will of course see many differences. But you will also see many similarities. These "hippies" are genuinely plowing a path into the future while honoring an ancient form of thought and action. To say it is disrespectful is an odd statement on your part. Since imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Considering that the Gods I work with seem to have little care of what I call myself, perhaps it is the opposite of what you say about it? You may speak as you will about our path, that is your right as a person that is lucky enough to not live under an oppressive, and dogmatic canonical religion. But just know that the freedon of paganism is my right as well. If I follow my path with honor, diligence and sincerety, then I am free to call myself whatever I like.
@LeoDiogenes
@LeoDiogenes 3 года назад
@Shadow Wolf You argue from a very angry and wounded perspective. Criticizing and attacking others who dont measure up to your expectations. I see your pain and I am sad for you. I wish better days for you. But, you will never see them until you step through the portal that you fear so much. Criticizing me for calling myself a Druid is as absurd as me attacking you for calling yourself Shadow Wolf, since you are clearly neither a shadow or a wolf. I urge you to take the freedom of our shared pagan path and use it to work on your own darkness. Let the Gods work out what they want modern paganism to look like.

As a descendent of Europe's lost magical/pagan societies, the lack of historical knowledge does make me quite blue sometimes. Do you ever incorporate information received in the astral or from dreams as signs of what our ancestors did or believed? (I hope this question makes sense. Thanks for the video!

As a practicing Druid who's father was one and his father going back many generations and I know that's true because I have recieved conformation from an independent source. It is interesting to see an Outsider's perspective. The most Important interpretation of the word Druid is ' Keeper of the Truth. ' . According to the Brehon law killing someone out side of battle was concidered murder. So the Idea they commited Human Sacrifice is contradicted by records and writtings from Ireland and other Celtic Writtings. There are many Written Sources extant in Ireland. Including the Cattle Raid of Cooley which is free of Christian glosses.

I really like the way you presented the topic and that you talk about it with such joy and interest. :D It is a waste that there are no written rituals,laws of druids. But on the brighter side we do remember some things: they were very wise and telepathic individuals, that conversed with nature,had visions,could communicate with spirit realms, and therefore,were able to answer questions nobody else could. Knew how to heal and maybe even saw glimpses of the future. That is way their purpose was political too. So honesty I think that if you are intuitive and feel connected to nature..just go for a stroll in the forest and sit there for a while in meditation,try asking some old,tall oak tree if it remembers druids and their ways ,and who knows, maybe you just might get your answer. :)

(Writing this as the video plays) I'm pretty sure that human sacrifice was common, at least among the Gauls. It's important to note that the Gauls believed in reincarnation, so being sacrificed wasn't seen as a finality. It also was something that would have been done due to necessity because a tribe of Gauls couldn't afford the extra mouths to feed, so POW's, criminals, and other's were used as sacrifices. There is an academic book that covers all of this called "Death, War, and Sacrifice. Studies in ideology and practice" written by Bruce Lincoln. It's a bit dry, but it's a great resource for those wishing to understand more about the past. Worth reading in my opinion.
@helenwood8482
@helenwood8482 3 года назад
Sacrifice was not a big thing. The Romans made a lot up to make the Gauls look bad. POWs would become slaves and were economically valuable. The evidence for very rare sacrifices does exist, but it was usually of their own people and high status people at that.
@helenwood8482
@helenwood8482 3 года назад
Also, the reincarnation thing is not true. They believed great heroes could be reborn in a new form, but not in reincarnation as we would understand the term.

How can a modern pagan, become a Druid, without a true foundation???
@thedruiddiaries6378
@thedruiddiaries6378 3 года назад
It can be done...and there are sources that can help you to build that foundation. The Druid Network, the Order of Bards Ovates and Druids, The British Druid Order, TDN ...these are all well known and respected groups. TDN is not a teaching order and is less formal, but very Druidic. The others offer courses which can be done online and you can access mentorship.Each organizations has a different specialized area in some sense and if you go to their websites, you can get an idea of what that is...while they are also strongly linked by the fundamental basic principles of Druidism;/druidry. The strongest surviving foundation for druidry is nature and we are a part of nature. There is you corner stone.

Some how I reason these ways need to be learned life lessin way of course with guidance, I have seen some need little attention and correct because of their conviction and dedication and others who recive abundant attention and refuse to grow, always felt getting back to nature is paramount to the great mystery, and when we do, nature comes to us, in unexpected ways, and when the winged ones and 4 legged ones come to us it's a special bonus for that is an honor bestowed by themselves,

For anyone wondering why there is no written information it is because they tried to write down as little information as possibly because they didn't want their knowledge to get in the wrong hands. However later one, they did write start to write some information, all of which was destroyed by Christain's. They wanted the religion to be wiped out from history. That's why many of the holidays the Druids celebrated were changed to Christain holidays in a way to stop people from celebrating the Celtic ones. For example, Samhain became Halloween, Yule became Christmas, Ostara became Easter, etc. Christain's also changed a few of the most popular gods to become Christain saints, such as Saint Bridget.

interesting words. dru-wid =oak learned. The ancient british word for the wise is 'wit' as in the kings counsel was the 'witan' (there's a longer title too. but form there you can see the jump to wic as in wiccan. Celtic culture saw women as equals. Rome did not and as the celts came under the Pax Romana this equality was lost. The best example of this friction was the rebellion of Boudicca and the Iceni. When her husband died he left the tribe to his wife and the roman emperor thinking they would co-rule. but the local governor said a woman couldn't rule so clearly the whole tribe now belonged to Rome. His brutality in this led to a massive rebellion around 60 CE.

As a point of note the Witan or to give it the full title Witenagemot (meeting of wise men) was a political institution in Anglo-Saxon England from 7th to 11 century and was an old English word, which means that it comes from the Anglo-Saxons, a group of Germanic tribes who invaded Britain after the Romans pulled out. Therefore it is doubtful that it has anything to do with the pre-Roman Celts and therefore the druids who would have spoken Brittonic, which later evolved into modern Welsh. Meanwhile looking at the old Celtic languages for their words for druid, old Irish is 'drui', old Cornish 'druw' and middle Welsh 'dryw'.
@GravesRWFiA
@GravesRWFiA 3 года назад
@@elvacoburg1279 I resisted giving the full name. As you say, it is best known for serving the pre-Norman kings but where it merged with the anglo-saxon germanic peoples and the exisiting romano-britain celts is foggy. but by the sound you're clearly seeing some sort of a link up. or a heck of a co-incidence.

@@peach411 Time Team? The ancient druids were exterminated by the romans, as the religious leaders they could unite different tribes against the invaders so the romans moved to break that link. it is unclear how far back the welch druids go but odds are it ain't back to 55 BCE.

I am a Freemason and it was thought by some writers in the 18th and 19th Century (including Thomas Paine) that Freemasonry was the continuation of Druidry. This isn't true on a literal level. Freemasonry is only able to trace it's roots back to the late 15th century and the Druids probably had probably been extinct for a 1000 years by then. However, Freemasonry takes its philosophical ideas from building in stone and from the study of the natural world and also from Geometry. Whether or not these were the kind of things the Druids also studied, it's hard to say. How a philosophical or religious system forms is an interesting question in itself. Some say that Druidry was formed out of local practices that were gradually integrated into a more organized religious system. Others say that they practiced a form of Pythagoreanism, which might make them closer to some of the ideas that formed the basis of Freemasonry much later. If the latter is true, they must have had contact with other cultures which influenced their thinking and they were not wholly insular. Freemasonry, it is said, may have formed out of lodges that were established in Scotland as early as 1483 and gradually transformed from associations of workmen into the worldwide fraternal order we have today. Freemasons then influenced the development of Wicca and other neo-pagan and occult organizations, including the Order of the Golden Dawn and the Theosophical Society. When Wiccans say "So mote it be", they are saying a phrase the Masons have used for a long time. Some of the early revival Druid orders, such as the Ancient and Archeological Order of Druids were also masonic. Hope this is at least interesting.
