Who will win the Rugby World Cup in France 2023? 

As a South African, I’m hoping your predictions are on target. What I do appreciate is that the game is in great shape internationally, and we’re living in an era of more exciting rugby than in recent history. In my opinion, any of Ireland, France, New Zealand or SA could take it, and would be deserving winners.

Irish fan here. Getting out of the group stages is an ask enough considering our opponents are the Boks and Scotland, the former obviously being the current champs and the latter proving to be a very respectable force demonstrated especially by the Six Nations. Assuming we do pull through and make a quarter final, we're to face the All Blacks or the French. We'd need to pair excellent form with favourable state of injury from the opposition teams. Going to be a very exciting world cup!

Love how everyone is writing the All Blacks off, the thing is we havnt seen the best from them under Foster, though we've seen glimpses of what theyre capable of they've nowhere near peaked & as for the likes of Ireland & France have they already shown their card & peaked too soon! 🤔 All the pressures on these two teams being the favorites but both have never won a world cup so no pressure on the Abs which makes them the most dangerous side at the tournament let's gooooo.... #AllBlackseverything 💪🏼💪🏼

I'm hoping Tonga can get some upsets this year. This is the most talented roster they have ever had just hope they can get the chemistry needed to play at a high level. Biggest weakness is their front three. Coleman and pita ahki just got announced on the squad as well as the other stars from the past year.

As an England fan I don’t think we have the easy route. Last time we played Argentina we lost, at home. And Japan will be tough. I still think the Springboks are the best team. 2 very narrow loses away from home to Fra and Ire on the back of some dubious ref decisions.

Englishmen here, because where England are in their rebuilding I would be very happy for them to get to a semi final but I just can't see them progressing further but you never know.. So because I was born in Zimbabwe and that African connection I will back my second team South Africa.. Great analysis and good work.

I’m Irish Australian, so definitely bias! If the URC has shown us anything that is the Irish sides definitely don’t fear SA or any of their teams/players. SA have all of the physical attributes while Ireland have rock solid never die mentality mixed in with silky skills. Going to be one hell of a tournament!! it's hard to make any prediction without a bias towards the team we love. it can result in predicting from the heart and not the head which leads to reaching the wrong conclusion. The French will most likely make the final and be very hard to beat regardless of who the challenger is and since we haven't seen the form of the southern hemisphere teams this year, to make any prediction beforehand is pointless. Based on the strength of the teams involved the All Blacks, Springboks and Irish in that order are the best bets to challenge the final but will struggle to beat the french.

You omitted one essential element for a successful World Cup tournament... the relative abilities of the management and backrow teams. Your predictions are all based on fighting the last war, not on how tactics and strategies evolve and change for the next campaign. Who know which country is developing innovative structures, plays and patterns? Who knows which countries might suffer from injuries or red cards to key players at key moments. The only thing that can be said about these predictions is that there is a tiny chance that they are collectively correct.

Nice review, I liked that you talked about all teams and not just the favorites. I don't have the same predictions but well everyone has his own. However I think that your semi-finals tables are not correct. According to wiki page and your picks, New Zealand would face Argentina, and Wallabies would play against SA. Regarding the pool stages I am really looking forward pool C which looks a bit unpredictable judging from the current forms of the different teams.

I know it’s unlikely and probably not gonna happen, but it would give me NO END OF JOY, to see Ireland thump Australia in a semi final or final. It’s nothing against the Wallabies at all, I just love seeing us thrash any team of Eddie Jones.

Great video. Just as a note, the semi-final 1 will be the winner of the game between A1 and B2 facing off against the winner of the C1 and D2 team. So you could have boks playing Aus in the semi and then playing NZ in final.

Australia and England will be the benefactors as they will probably waltz into the Semi's without any injuries. Crazy draws. France will not go far, the ABs will be in the final. along with hopefully Ireland but more likely England, Australia or the Boks.

Interesting predictions. I'm not convinced the northern hemisphere teams will go that quietly though. The 6 nations competition has been by far the strongest international competition the last three years, I think this will give at least ireland and france the self belief to win on the biggest stage against any opposition. All eyes will be on south Africa for the rugby championship to see if they still have what it takes.

Any Team who gets beat by France , will never be an upset..

There are many factors that can take a team to the final, in my opinion, the most important 3 is, in this order, defense, squad depth and the ability to put points on the board in a variety of ways and consistently. The Springboks, All Blacks and France are the only teams who can manage that. Ireland checks a lot of boxes, but I think their downfall will come in the knockout stages when the inevitable injuries start setting in, even if they get one over the Boks in the group stages. Very rare to play the Springboks and not have some broken players afterwards. All Blacks are not on song. I say Springboks or France. Aus will be good but don't have the depth, Arg will be good but will fall short against the AB's, SB's France and Ireland. Is this the first one for France? Or will the Springbok preparation prove them champs, once again.

I'd love to see an upset or three from the likes of Georgia, Japan and Fiji. I almost want to call these Tier 1.5 teams since I think they could potentially ruin a lot of Tier 1 team's days, especially this year. I would love to see a Fiji v Japan Quarter-Final, but one could only dream.

Everyone is so focused on France and Ireland. I agree these are two great sides but with erratic World Cup records. We saw how Leinster folded with too much pressure in two competitions. Boks vs All Blacks final is my prediction, first time since 1995. The Boks might just pull it off, only thing that bother me is goal kicking. Libbok was terrible in URC final so Pollard Will have to be on top of his game. SA also need a long range goal kicker in close matches. This leaves me with a question. Will Frans Steyn be on the bench for the Boks for this very reason? Time will tell. Thanks Guru for brilliant analysis.

You're semi's are incorrect though. Because in both semifinals the winners of Pool A and B have to face the Winners of Pool C and D. Therefore the Boks can't play against the All Black's in the Semi's

France lifting the trophy on home soil would be a fairytale for this country. They've come close many times. None more so than the extremely close 7-8 loss to the All Blacks in 2011. That was their 2nd Rugby World Cup final in NZ against the All Blacks. To finally join the pantheon of World Cup winners, would be testament to the legendary french pedigree and rugby legacy.

I don't see Wales getting out of the pool stages, neither do I see England. I would predict a huge upset in pool C with Australia and Georgia (!!!) getting out and Argentina and Japan in pool D. As for the quater finals between the pools A & B, let the luckiest win that. All teams are more or less equivalent and the gods of rugby will just decide whoever wins the games.

South Africa and New Zealand always have this incredible hunger and intensity to win the World Cup regardless of their performance or ranking leading up to it. The Northen Hemisphere teams always count the chickens before they hatch, which makes them complacent at the very last moments. And those are the moments when South Africa or New Zealand will always remind them how to do it. Yes France is incredible at the moment, I will always choose the Springboks or The All Blacks to win the World Cup because they both have a similar mindset when it comes that that competition.

Just as a fascination, if the knock out stages go as you suggest, it will mean that Eddie Jones will have coached another team to the RWC Final and again failing to get over the line. And against South Africa nogal. That would probably infuriate him no end. Couldn't win against South Africa with a dominant England team, couldn't pip South Africa with a strong Australian team. It will eventually come to him against the Boks. I guess the way the setup went initially was the 4 Southern Hemisphere teams in a pool of their own against at least one of the top 4 NH teams. The rest are gap fillers. Pool A: NZ and France, Italy as well Pool B: RSA, Scotland, Ireland Pool C: Australia with Wales Pool D: Argentina with England Although now that I mention it out loud, it is a crooked system since neither Wales nor England are on top form right now. I disagree with this SA has a very difficult route to the Final. with a competitive pool and a very challenging knock out stage. France and New Zealand are highly formidable teams that could leave us overexhusted by the time we get the semis. This is mostly the same team from 2019 but we only have had one tough pool game and it was smooth sailing until the semis where we beat Wales just narrowly who had a very tough route to the semi final. I can only see us having a smiler fate to them this time around. Rugby Championship could change my mind if we win it comfortably though. but looking at it now i dont see it happening as we are not consistent enough. good video non the less though.

The ABs don't have a chance. We've been ravaged by front-fow injuries so lack depth at prop, while Foster doesn't even bother to research the opposition. The ABs will almost certainly be heading for another quarter-final exit after they've also played in a soft Super Rugby competition that doesn't properly enforce the laws World Rugby set.
