**WHO YOU GONNA CALL??** Ghostbusters (1984) Reaction: FIRST TIME WATCHING 

The role of Venkman was originally written for Dan Aykroyd's best friend, John Belushi. It took Aykroyd a while to write the script. He actually got the news of Belushi's death while in the process of writing a line for him. Slimer...the green ghost at the hotel was written/created by Aykroyd S kind of an Homage to John. A party animal that just doesn't give a crap. Aykroyd has lovingly referred to Slimer as "The Ghost of John Belushi."

6:22 In the movie context, we are supposed to think it was a ghost but Behind the scenes, fun fact: that bookshelf actually did fall over by itself and the actors did not know it would happen so their reactions were real. But the scene and dialog made the final cut.

The green ghost with the munchies is Slimer and is a beloved character for many of us that grew up with the cartoon.

I like how Venkman looks at Peck like he's thinking "how can he not know the magic word?!".

The restaurant scene is a parody of New Yorkers being indifferent while weird stuff occurs around them. THE Ghostbusters headquarters is set in a real firehouse a few blocks north of the World Trade Centre.

I saw this when it first came out. I was 29 years old. It was amazing. So different, so much fun! The audience was so hyped up. The Ghostbusters song was a smash hit on the radio.

Ghostbusters is basically, the story writer was told to write a horror movie and the dialogue writer was told to write a comedy.

Annie Potts, the actress who plays the secretary, was in one of the funniest 80s,90s sitcoms, Designing Women. Dan Ackroy and Bill Murray were on Saturday Night Live together, for years. Other iconic Ackroyd films, with John Belushi (also SNL) is the Blues Brothers and with Eddie Murphy (also SNL), Trading Places. These SNL years were hilarious and very politically incorrect. Just remembered, Rick Moranis, the dog neighbor, was on SNL too. All these guys appeared at the same time.

Since you are reacting to 80's movies, I'd like to recommend "Adventures in Babysitting" It's underrated, but I think you might get a kick out of it.

We got $5 or $10 bucks sometimes for the research that the psychology students were doing but usually it was "extra credit" for our class. I did a handful of them while I was in school. On Netflix's "Movies That Made Us", one of them is Ghostbusters and it's fun listening to the story of the movie.

This is one of the films where the DVD commentary is truly amazing. It’s Harold Ramis, Ivan Rietman, and Joe Medjuk telling so many insider stories about the production of the film. I highly recommend you give it a listen some time.

it has to be one the the top gags.. 3 of them in an elevator and Ray asks for his nuclear accelerator to be switched on. Both Peter and Egon slowly move away from it even though they can't further than 10 inch..

Every time I hear the ghostbusters song I envision myself at the skating rink. They played this every day for years at the rink.

@Nickreacts the Ghostbusters movie is actually based off of a old tv series of the same name. They bought the rights to use the name so they could make the movie. As well as both versions have a cartoon adaptation.

This was such a great reaction - thank you! 😁 I grew up with this movie and have seen it so many times, but it was only this time, watching your reaction, that I noticed the packet of Stay Pufft Marshmallows on the kitchen counter when the eggs are cooking by themselves. Such a great little piece of foreshadowing!👻

I saw this when it first came out, and I was totally blown away by this film. The giant Marshmallow man was a surprise to me, and have me rolling on the floor laughing. No; really, I was sitting in the front row, and fell out of my seat with laughter. This is one of my favorite films of all time.

What sells the concept is the writing by Ramis and Aykroyd, the technobabble mixed with the mythology of Goser worshipers. Also the acting, Egon is the pure scientist (my favorite), Aykroyd the scientist ready to think outside the box and Murray who uses it as a tool to get through life with the least effort.

The practical effects that was used is amazing. This was one of those movies no one in the beginning thought would work. The comedy/horror was a great way to introduce us to this world. I'm excited for the new movie especially when Jason used practical effects, and certain scenes are actually unused from the original that Jason wanted to include. Its a big Thank You and a call back. If only Harold Ramis was still around but I think his memory is honored very well.

I actually watched the Saturday morning cartoon series before I ever watched the movie it was based on. Such a classic!! Ray, Egon, Peter, and Winston are the perfect team. Ray and Egon are the brains behind the technology, science, and ghost researching. Peter was friends with them and kind of got roped in as a result. His degree was in psychology and paranormal psychology, but that’s as far as his contribution goes. He really seemed to be along for the ride. Winston is the newbie who was just looking for a job. I love how when Janine was doing the pre-interview and mentioning paranormal things, his response was “if there’s a steady paycheck in it, I’ll believe whatever you want”. By the end of the movie, he seemed to enjoy the job and fit right in, which brings me to my only complaint. It would have been more appropriate and satisfying if his line at the end was “I love this job!” not “I love this town!”

I made my own GB tee shirt with the logo after seeing it in ads before the film, and merch wasn’t out to the extent it is today for a film, and people thought I bought the shirt lol.

When Sigourney Weaver was levitating, Ivan Reitman, the director, had some experience with stage magic. There were indeed wires suspending her, hence her ability to spin in midair, I believe she was also in a harness.

Dan Aykroyd and his family has has a history of Spiritualism , so if you ever run into him, he can probably answer those technical questions you have. I also want to recommend Adventures in Babysitting. Then Groundhog Day for more Bill Murray and Blues Brothers for more Dan Aykroyd.

I urge you to buy the anniversary bluray or some shit... the pure commentary is gold.... We get Harold on there before his passing ... And that "keep the 5 Bucks" line has them giggling right to the very end. They tell a story where it is Harolds wedding day but they were still filming. As harold is making his way to the front Bill leans out and whispers loudly "The hair looks great".. hahaha

I was six when my cousin showed me Ghostbusters on VHS. The librarian flying at them gave me nightmares for a month

I was 14 when this came out, saw it in theatre, and remember the everyone laughing hysterically at Dan saying, “The stay puff marshmallow man.” I agree, line deliveries made this movie even better. A well made Saturday morning relatively serious cartoon series premiered a couple of years after this movie. It lasted for several seasons before the sequel movie.

William Atherton(Walter Peck) actually admitted in an interview years back that he couldn’t go many places in public without someone wanting to pick a fight with him after the movie originally came out because he played such a convincing antagonist it’s like people couldn’t separate the man from his character 🤔

Omg...I cracked up in hearing you've never seen this movie lol! I remember seeing it when it came out and everyone loved it. I call it a- Paranormal Comedy. So many goofy funny moments in this lol. It was nice to see SW in a different type of role. The first time I ever remember seeing Annie Potts, she had made a movie w/ Mark Hamill called- Corvette Summer (it was a ok movie). She's a really good actress and is on the series- Young Sheldon as his Gr'ma. She was great in - Pretty in Pink and the series- Designing Women. Was funny watching your reactions to this, my Nick Fix was overdue lol.😁

Many people think there is a mistake at the end. When the Busters entered the highrise it was day. On the Roof it was night, and at the end credits it was day again. This is NOT a mistake. The Ghostbusters are no Space Marines. They are Exterminators with extremely heavy equipment, and they are all heavy smokers. They just took THAT LONG to battle the stairs.

The only difference between Ray, the character, and Dan Aykroyd, the actor, is that Dan isn't a scientist, otherwise he's just playing himself. He is, however, 100% on board with the paranormal and believes he's had personal encounters with ghosts.

I was 7 years old when i saw it in tge theater. it was very funny but at a certain point when demon dogs appear and they are facing an Ancient Entity,it takes on an Epic tone. A child of that age takes what he is seeing very seriously and i belive that there is the success of the film,: the children who saw the film and then the animated series

So Dan Akkroyd had envisioned an epic of BIBLICAL proportions with his original treatment. After shopping it around producer Ivan Reitman at Columbia liked his idea. But suggested pearing back the effects(Stay Puft was in the first act). He invited Harold Ramis(RIP) and Dan to his lake house to write a script after selling the idea to Columbia. The blue collar angle came from that weekend. They shot pretty much that script(minus the improvs by the enrire cast). Improvisations like Sigourney Weaver acting like a dog in her audition. Initially John Belushi was supposed to be in this. As was Eddie Murphy and John Candy. From all appearances Ghostbusters shouldn't have worked since this film is BASICALLY a horror comedy.....but the final product. From score, to soundtrack, to effects, to story.....everything worked. Still works nearly 40 years later. The film spawned a successful cartoon series(and spinoff), comics, video games(1 written by Ramis and Akkroyd), toys and 2 sequels(2nd coming out on the 18th or so).....as well as a poorly excecuted reboot. As to the characters Peter is the straight man(aka skeptic), Egon is very much the tech guy of the group. Ray is the heart. And Winston is the audience insert. Personally Egon was always my favorite but EVERYONE has great lines. A fun thing to think about......if Peter wasn't being such a DICK to that student, he'd have seen his experiment ACTUALLY worked. This film(and it's first sequel) is SO damn quotable. Welcome to this wonderful franchise of Ghostheads

okay, so I was 4 when I saw this in the theater. This was the equivalent to a ride at Universal Studios. The scary library ghost, Slimer's intro at the hotel, Dana and Lewis's possession with the big demon dogs. It was a total roller coaster ride. Even though my parents refused to explain Ray's dream of the rendezvous with his ghost friend. I was so annoyed.

Classic, I watch this one & 2 every so often. Ghostbusters the Video game is generally considered to be the 3rd "film" canon-wise, since it was the last time the 4 of them worked together, even if only their voicework. When you look into the background of the first one it's fascinating to think of what could have been. John Candy was supposed to get the part that Rick Moranis ultimately got, but he wanted to play the character as a Frenchman for some reason. Eddie Murphy was originally slated as Winston, but he had scheduling conflicts (he was working on Beverly Hills Cop). Aykroyd & Ramis were Spiritualists at the time, which lends credence & depth to the movie overall. Lastly, the one I always wonder about. John Belushi was originally supposed to be Peter Venkman, but he ODed & died, so it was re-written for Bill Murray. Slimer supposedly is/was put in as an ode to the kinds of characters Belushi tended to play. If I could visit alternate Earths, I'd like seeing the one where Belushi lived to play the role of Venkman. The energy of THAT Ghostbusters would certainly be different, & I highly doubt Slimer would be there. If Slimer was, it'd no doubt be different then the version we know.

I was 6 when this was released. I was a little scared in the library but mostly found the movie fun and and tons of laughs. Now, 40 years later, it's still probably top 5 movies of all time for me. Definitely top 10. Best Bill Murray movie. Best Dan Akroid movie. Almost Best Rick Moranis movie (he was dynamite in Spaceballs )

the music from the opening that you said was obviously eerie and a little bit spooky, but that you didn't know how to describe it is 'partially' WHOLE-TONE. Compare with 'ridley's lair' from the original metroid on the 8-bit NES. the main spooky eerie theme is largely but not completely whole-tone. (lookup examples the whole-tone scale.)

Growing up in the late 80s and early 90s, Ghostbusters was a gargantuan cultural phenomenon. Do yourself a favor and check out the cartoon series, and play the video game from 2009 if you want more lore and awesome set-pieces. The sequel movie gets a lot of hate for some reason, but I honestly like it. Looking forward to that video, man.

"Are they gonna go into the rules of the ghosts?" There's actually quite a lot of lore, but hardly any of it is in the films. The comics, and often the couple of cartoon series, will tend to go further into the lore as their medium allows them to do so. But, for the movies themselves, it's best just to roll with it :)

And we'd like to thank Huey Lewis and the News for the title theme. No, actually Ray Parker Jr. would get sued by Huey Lewis and his record label for plagiarism due to the Ghostbusters theme's similarities to the song "I Want a New Drug". The case was settled out of court provided neither party speak of it again publicly. Huey slipped up, though, and did mention it in an interview, leading to a counter-suit from Parker. Again, settled quickly, but the man probably doesn't have to work again between that and the royalties on this one song.
