Nexttime dig a 2 block deep hole. Place TNT on the bottom, place gravel ontop of the TNT, then place a pressure plate ontop of the gravel. It will make sure the trap is concealed better and harder to see :)

Hunger in minecraft requires things to go down. If you just hold shift or go so far down you don't need to then you aren't doing any actions to bring down hunger. Hunger only goes down from walking, running, taking damage, swinging your fist/weapon/tool, jumping, swimming, etc.
