Good for you! I go to my 90-year-old mother's house and shutter. She tries, and I help as much as she'll let me, but I think it's overwhelming for her. Your children will appreciate it so much. 👍😊👍

I am 59 and I think the same way. After clearing out when my parents died I decided I would not leave my son in the same position. I read a book about Swedish Death Cleaning and it makes so much sense.

Your children will love you for doing this now! When my mother passed at 83 (dad had passed 2 years earlier at 83), we went through our childhood home, mom was good at hiding her stuff because if you walked into her home it was immaculate and always had a combination clean and baking fragrance, but open up any cabinets, closets, drawers or go into the basement and her secret was discovered. Mom love shopping, 4 huge bedroom closets were jammed packed with clothes with tags still on them, 4 dressers and 2 chest of drawers also had clothes she bought but never wore, then there was the towels and bed linens, let’s move onto the dis set and cookware and bakingware hoard. The basement had more kitchen and bath items but the biggest hoard was her Christmas and Easter decorations, 7 artificial trees in varying colors along with ornaments in varying colors, mom loved themed colors each year, life size Santa’s reindeer, bunnies, Easter baskets, I mean life size, boxes of lights not the boxes the lights came in but moving box size, wreaths and garlands for each of her favorite holidays, cornucopia’s in varying materials, 5 sets of patio furniture, 2 complete bedroom sets, multiple lamps and end tables, a cook wood stove. My parents lived on 1pm acres, the frontage of the house was a half acre of grass, not only did we fill that front yard with all the household items but we also filled each Sid of the house that had about 1,000 feet from house to woods on each side, the estate sale took 2 days because the second day was the 900 sqft oversized 2 car garage and dad’s 20x20 workshop, we cleared a 3,000 sqft house and a 1500 sqft basement. It was brutal for us 4 kids, our spouses and about 4 grandchildren (my parents was blessed with 12 grandchildren who are sca there’d across the state and country). No will, except the house was deeded to all 4 of us, no letter to say who got what, but we never fought over anything we children wanted or what our children wanted before the estate sale. All the photos, family documents and cookbooks, many handwritten by mom, went to my 2 sisters-in-law because they were the family historians and about 2 years after mom’s passing, my brother (3 brothers) and I received beautiful phot albums, individual cloud accounts with all the photos and descriptions, professionally bound cookbooks of mom’s personal recipes along with all those recipes also on the cloud; did I say my 2 sisters-in-law rock?

@jkp62 Wow! I'm so glad you get along with your siblings and their spouses. We're beneficiaries of my sister-in-law's "estate." She laughs and says we're going to have a mess to go through, and she's right. Unfortunately, there's nothing to keep or sell. It's all junk. Your sisters-in-law were wonderful putting all that together. I hope to do that for my daughters-in-law and my grands.

I did it with bleach but don't leave it set really long as bleach also eats fabric.
