Are you a teacher? This is the clearest video on youtube that explains thoroughly well the operation of this chess clock. All others pale in comparison. Plus your words are articulated so very well. Thank you. I just do not understand what is Bonus Time, or Delay Time. All I know is that the Rapid, or Blitz has a certain time per game. I am a beginner player learning chess. Thanks again.
Thanks for your kind comments, David! Some tournaments use bonus or delay and other specific timing controls. If you're using delay time, you get a specific amount of time on the clock before each turn in which you can make your move before your actual time starts counting down. For example, a 10-second delay time gives you ten seconds to move, and if you make your move in 7 seconds, no time is taken off your clock - your time remains the same. Bonus time is similar only it's added to your total time in each turn. So if you have 10-second bonus time, and you make your move in 7 seconds, your time actually goes up at the end of your turn.
Thanks for showing the Delay time feature. the other video on the Advanced clock did NOT show this feature and I needed to confirm it does in fact show the delay counting down before the clock starts to count down. Now I can confidently buy this clck for my backgammon game needs.
Does this style clock allow for adding time while a game is in progress? For example, if an illegal move is played the other player would stop the clock, confirm with director, then gain 2 minutes. the game would resume
in professional tournaments, when they play w bonus time, everytime you press your button you get time added for you, not to the other player... this clock sucks because the faster you play, the more time you will guve to your opponent.
Help, my chess clock isn't working the way I wanted it to and I just got it! I can't set bonus time or delay time as in the settings mode it just automar goes to alarm, and once I do set the time limit it keeps counting up. It counts up even when I have a time limit set on it! I need help because I just want it to count down and for me to have the option to use bonus and delay time.
Hi - when you hold down the Play button to get to the settings mode, do you ever have the option of setting the clock time? If you leave the time at 0, the clock will always count up. To get it to count down, you need to set time on the clock. Then you can set the bonus or delay time afterward.
The player presses the button at the end of his turn, so the bonus time should, in fact, be added to the other player's side. Then, when he or she is done, they press their button and the time is added back to the first player's time, because bonus time is added at the beginning of the turn.

Different tournaments use different time controls, but this clock is designed to add the bonus time at the beginning of your turn (when your opponent presses the button).
It's almost exactly the same, however the effective amount of time per side in this video is 10 : 05. If precisely 10 minutes is desired the clock should be set to 9 : 55 per side with 5 second bonus. The side with first move will then get exactly 10 : 00 to start. Edit: The version of this clock that I bought does not have this issue. It adds bonus time to your side after you press.
Bonus time adds time to the clock, while delay waits a specified time to start counting down, so there is a difference. With bonus time, you could theoretically end the game with more time than you start with.
delay time mode is good for playing backgammon where each player has for example 12 seconds to roll their dice and make their move BEFORE their actual game clock starts to count down. if they make their move in the alloted 12 seconds, then no game time is subtracted/no penalty. Other games use bonus/add time like chess if you are good at speed chess and the move is simple and you can make your move very quickly without any thought then you are given a credit/bonus for that speed factor.
