I think Giulia pushed Alberto away at first because it was her first time seeing a sea monster and being startled that combined with the fact that Luca also acted in fear, Luca who is supposed to be Alberto’s good friend was afraid, so to her it made sense to be afraid as well. I don’t think she was being mean on purpose.

The reason why all the towns people were so fast to except these sea monsters wasn’t because they won the race, but because of Massimo. And let’s be honest, nobody would want to argue with someone like him.

I actually cried when the two ladies put down their umbrellas. I'm gay and I get emotional from that scene because that small scene is actually a big moment for gay people. It's the moment when you feel like you don't need to hide yourself from society anymore so now you can come out of the closet. It's so well done by the writer and animator.

I don’t think she wanted Alberto away, but with how aggressive he’d been acting, it fed into the stereotypes of them being ‘monsters’.

Yeah Alberto scared her on purpose, she was just reacting in the moment. If you watch the scene back after Alberto leaves looking all hurt and betrayed, she looks sad and thoughtful. By the time they walk home she's had time to process a little bit. That's why she's not scared anymore.

@@theprideling Agreed. I think her reaction to Alberto was because it was just the initial shock. However, on the way home from the beach, she has some time to process learning that sea monsters are real, and is smart enough to figure out that these two boys came out of no where, both act weird, and she just found out one is a sea monster...so it makes sense the other would be too!

I think that the reason she pushed Alberto back and not Luca when she found out, was because I don’t think she had really put two and two together yet. I think she felt a lot of guilt once she found out. Absolutely amazing movie and review!

There's actually a lot of queer subtext in this movie so I found it emotional myself but it's understandable if most people missed it. Probably the biggest giveaway is the old female couple. You could probably catch it more easily with a rewatch.

Yeah. I totally got that too. The sea monsters being an allegory for queerness, and the fish hunters/fish haters being allegories for a homophobic town. They were called monsters, had to feel comfortable in their identity, etc. Also the scene where Alberto reveals he's a sea monster felt a little bit like "outing", and Luca denying that he's a sea monster felt like pretending he wasn't queer to not be seen as weird. Or when the grandma said "not everyone will accept him". Not to mention their sea monster forms are literally the gay man (MLM) flag colors lol. I think the general consensus among watchers was that it was heavily queer coded, and it made me emotional too haha

In fact, according to director Enrico Casarosa (who also helmed the Pixar short La Luna), Luca won’t be a love story at all - not a straight one, not a queer one, not one with love triangles or schoolyard crushes. Casarosa specifically wanted to focus on the intimate bonds of childhood friendship."....well...the creators are stating it's not queer.

@@ahnnahnewell5263 i mean as a bi guy i still prefer looking at it through a queer lens as it is easier for me to attach to, i understand it is not intended that way, and i will not say it’s intended that way. i just like viewing it that way, because it really hits home even further for me that way and i find it relatable and enjoyable, i mean alone it still is. but that’s just my point of view, as someone who still lives in a somewhat homophobic town and all my life grew up hating myself, seeing stuff that’s lgbt friendly like some of the stuff slowly pumping out these days or things like this that can make some tied to such an allegory, i feel my younger self would have loved this a lot and found safety in such films.

Yeah it's pretty clear that a bunch of them (especially the older men) aren't happy with it but they're letting it go. It's mostly the kids that are accepting and that's pretty realistic of how change in ideology goes. It usually takes a well-respected member of the community to stand up for it first, and then maybe a couple of well-known "insiders" showing that they're actually "outsiders" as well (like the two old ladies). It makes sense to me, especially in the idealized world of a kid's movie. Like the grandma said "some people will never accept him, but some will"

I hate when people say this is a love story. They're all friends It's a special friendship Why does everything have to be about attraction? The guy that wrote the movie said it was about his childhood friend let me reiterate the word friend friend friend

@@sarasweightlossjourney1432 The director also said that he is more than happy if queer people see themselves in the film and interpret it as a "coming of age queer story" even if it is directed to be about friendship. It's up for personal interpretation: isn't it wonderful that a movie can both resonate with queer people and also be about healthy friendship?

I like how the movie was based in Italy gives more of a culture feel like with the other Disney films ❤️ and Omg ur Italian accent actually sounded good for someone that knows like two things 🤣 it was a cute story line will deffo watch it fully on the weekend ❤️

"Merfolk" (Mermen? Merboys?) sounds more convenient. But maybe there's a subtle message about "taking back that word form the bigots", and that's the reason why they say always say "sea monsters"

Nice reaction. You had so much fun watching this. I don't know if you have seen "Avatar the last Air bender" but Alberto sounds like the same voice actor who did Soka, Kitara's brother. Maybe it's just me. If you haven't seen Avatar the Last Air bender I recommend you do.

Then you said that's all you knew. Italian flowed from you sounded so natural. That was far better than it ever sounded from me. I sadly don't have language skills or talent for it. I know how they did Luca so they took pictures of where they wanted the movie to be and they wanted them to be sea monsters / human and they wanted all the people in the town to be human but some sea monsters and they ask kids and teenagers and adults to do the voices and they went on the computer to make the characters and one of the people decided to name the movie Luca!

8:02 For everyone wondering where Luco got the bike he raced on in the movie's final act, no he didn't steal one. He grabbed the one you can see beside the boat they used to hide under, right here. When he signs up to race solo, you can see the bike is rusty and has seaweed still hanging on it.

According to the creators and some deleted scenes, Gulia originally was a little older and was Luca's love interest, but they changed it to make it more focused on friendship, although there are stull skme hints of it. Also, there was foing ti be a third sea monster kid, but they reworked the character into one of the bully's friends.

I really enjoyed this movie. After Coco, which I LOOOOVE but is very emotionally taxing, I'm glad they made a flick that doesn't crush you with emotions.
