I got this instrument about two weeks ago and I've decided to work through Mark Levine's "The Jazz Piano Book" (which I highly recommend if you're into jazz piano).
This is a playthrough of Klenner & Lewis's "Just Friends", using voicings containing root, 3rd, and 7th (and melody) only. I'm going to try to post a video every week of my progress on this instrument!

For anyone wondering, this is NOT a microtonal keyboard. It has the standard 88 keys. It is an Isomorphic keyboard, named Chromatone, model Wholetone Revolution, created by Wataru Ohkawa. The case is of a Korg N5, assembled by Korg years ago. The keys move in whole steps to the side, semitones in diagonals, and each key has 3 touch points so you have more ergonomic fingering options. It's like having a piano with 6 white keys and 6 black keys instead of 7+5. All scales have the same fingering, as in a guitar, hence why it's 'isomorphic'. You can transpose any song just moving to the side. This concept is better known as Jankó Piano, although Mr Wataru invented his keyboard without ever having heard about the older one. On the other hand, this concept existed way before Paul von Jankó patented his piano too, in some harpsichords. This idea traces way back to late 17th century! Even Lizt tried the Janko keyboard and loved it. Steinway made Jankó pianos. The most probable reason this is not the standard keyboard on all pianos nowadays is because by the late 19th century the traditional keyboard was too widespread in all concert halls and theaters, and that would require all pianists relearning. But the idea makes a lot more sense than the traditional keyboard, Nowadays with easy to carry electronic keyboards musicians may have a choice. In comparison, over the 19th century all wind instruments underwent changes, which were adopted by musicians since each individual carries his own instrument everywhere. So the Boehm system was adopted on the flute, adapted to the clarinet, and influenced the oboe to some extent. For the accordions, there is the piano keyboard but also the chromatic 'Bayan' keyboard, which is also isomorphic, but moves in minor thirds to the side, chromatic in one diagonal, whole steps in the other diagonal. Which diagonal is which depends if it's 'type C' or 'type B', the type B being the most used in Russia, while C is very popular in Italy and I think a big part of Europe. In other countries such as Brazil both are used, so depends on who you learn with and personal preference. How do I know all this? My graduation term paper was on this topic. I researched several isomorphic instruments and even interviewed Wataru Ohkawa. If you are interested in reading the paper, here's the english version: docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vSlhY8Iqx9AHPsiH7UFwfPz3HxtTG3sOy1A5b1CEOqCAlooB3JPrGYGAGRGo9vx-RYn3RNPh-3l5303/pub And the original in Portuguese: docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vS2L3Abt8snoB0nebra4tG6omRjeLrDH5KLV4Zjkj47NSLD4N50Lz-n73RXQMVOnJ3Mioc0mJT-aO77/pub

What a bizarre concept. RU-vid's throwing me down the rabbit hole again. I've never heard of a Janko keyboard before and I thought it was going to be vaguely like an accordion layout, but noooope. That layout is wild. In an abstract way it makes total sense and has a ton of utility, but it also looks like one of those things that would be a pain in the ass to learn for the first time. How long did it take to adjust to it?

It’s supposed to be easier than conventional keyboards due to allowing the same scale and chord fingerings in all keys, and allowing wider intervals with each hand. I’d prefer one with standard white and black key colors though, as it’s easier to orient what key you’re in.

It's probably the reason this keyboard is not the standard nowadays. Invented too late, grand pianos were already spread in concert halls. But it's not the same system as the Chromatic Button Accordion. This moves in whole steps to the side, semitone in both diagonals. The CBA system is too narrow for an acoustic piano. It can work for a synth though, and for that you could by a Lumatone right now and just chose the CBA layout.

Or if you are into microtonal music too, and don't mind the price, Lumatone is an option. Or you can go for a chromatic accordion (bayan), it is a different layout, in minor thirds, but also isomorphic. Some have free bass for the left hand too, instead of just stradella. It is a "jacko" layout key-bead on a modified Korg N5ex Synth. The idea was that the notes on each side of a key are whole steps, and the diagonal keys are a half step from their neighbors. The advantage is that you can play any song in different keys without learning other scales because there is other variation for each scale. (Copied from another reply I wrote)

It would be hard in a minor key, because you'd have to reference the harmonic series of the relative major, but I don't think the harmonic series works like that. Would be an interesting idea to mess around with on this particular instrument

Yes, octaves are narrower. You can reach 13ths, or even double octave if your hand is big. It has 88 keys in the same room as 61 keys of the Korg N5 synth.

It looks more complicated than it is, same 12 notes repeated across the keyboard. If you know where middle C is oriented, you're good.

I wish I had that keyboard right now. When I try to play a jazzy chord with my fat fingers, reaching for a white key between two black keys, inevitably the adjacent black keys get pressed too. Frustrating. Do they make adapters that can be superimposed on a regular keyboard?

Even Steinway made them a century ago. Blüthner is one that will build one if ordered. I think there are others too.

It is, called Wholetone Revolution or Chromatone. Same layout as Jankó Piano. See below: For anyone wondering, this is NOT a microtonal keyboard. If you are interested in the topic email me requesting the paper, I'll send it. - ericoschmitt at yahoo com.br

Errr the reason why I like keyboard instruments is _because_ I'm already familiar with the piano layout xD I was happy that I would even immediately pick up a melodica
@foljs5858
@foljs5858 6 месяцев назад
And the reason to like this keyboard is that if you're familiar with playing something on one key, you can transpose it to all keys with the exact same movements.
@schnitzel5124
@schnitzel5124 6 месяцев назад
@@foljs5858Not really a selling point when there's a transpose button on most keyboards already... Never mind the fact that it's way more beneficial to actually learn how to transpose on a normal keyboard layout which is used, yknow, everywhere.

Exactly what it is supposed to be. Even Jordan Rudess tried the concept (but since he had played the traditional keyboard for decades, he keeps playing that). This is very intuitive, like playing a guitar, so no worries getting lost. Also there are dots on top marking he C's.
