Great subject. As one of your older subscribers and being a long time collector this is a great subject. I just recently starting going thru some of my 80s and 90s cards. I was shocked at the value of a 1999 fleer brilliants 24 karrat gold card I own. I'm glad to see that there is interest in cards of this era. They are unique and cool. Thanks for all you do for the hobby.
@PeaceToAll-sl1db
@PeaceToAll-sl1db Месяц назад
The interest is only from our age group. I have hundreds of unopened boxes from 80s to present at my office as i collect unopened cards. My kid has zero interest in any box unless it is current. If I offered him an 89 score football or 83 Topps baseball, he would say no thanks. Give me something from this year where I can pull a 1-1 or an auto he would say. Younger generations have no interest in collecting cards of people they did not see growing up.

90s basketball is king. However, 90s baseball had many great inserts also. I'm a Kobe collector and unless I win Powerball, I won't be able to get his best cards unfortunately. The 99 Topps Chrome Lords of the Diamond refractors are underrated. The Griffey Jr is my favorite. The monopoly Fanatics doesn't care about innovation because there is no competition. NOTHING will ever top the 90s and early 00s innovation.

I got back into cards around 1990; collecting hockey, baseball, & football. Prime junk was era. By the mid 1990’s I turned my attention to collecting autographs. Going to shows was an enjoyable experience where I got to meet many athletes who weren’t charging astronomical fees and there was also many opportunities to get free autographs. Wish I continued collecting cards in the mid to late 90’s as it looks like there were a lot of cool designs

1998 Stadium club triumvirate with Luminous luminescent and illuminator also the odd set vs even set; all of it is very interesting to learn about. Love 96 and 97 Bowman’s best Atomic between preview and base set. Molten metal has a number of high profile numbered cards. 97 gallery of heroes (stained glass) is another one too.

I love many of the 90s hockey inserts, most are still very affordable if not Gretzky. Great baseball inserts, especially like the mirror golds, Flair inserts, SP holoview die cuts.

I just bought a binder full of 90s baseball including some Metal Universe. Unfortunately they were pretty much all base, but it was super fun to go through and see all the art and card designs.

I have been deep into the 90s since Dec2022. Couldn't be happier with the growth of my PC. Before i jumped in I didn't realize the RCs are NOT the cards to chase. It's these 3rd, 5th, 8th yr crazy cool rare refractors and inserts. Once the general hobby catches on to this I think the 90s may have another leg upwards in popularity and prices. Good to see you get into this Scott. I mainly go after the guys I collected back then...Frank Thomas , Griffey, Chipper, Maddux, Molitor. Nextgen_Sportscards!

Awesome stuff!!! For sure the 90s holo designs are more eye appealing than a plain purple or a red parallel. On top of that PSA 10 of those cards actually mean something in relative to pop count rarity. 90s era needs to get introduced more to the masses.

Man I remember 93 being at a now defunct card shop in Essex Maryland on eastern ave called all American cards (I know generic name but it was awesome back then ) but my friend Nick and I rode are bikes there and he had just put out the first ever topps finest release and they were 25 bucks a pack it was crazy but my friend bought a pack and pulled a refractor and the shop owner bought it off him immediately for 50 bucks and he gave him two more packs of finest as well (we didn’t know he pulled the box hit at the time) I only had five bucks so I bought two packs of 93 donruss series 1 as the piazza RR was a super hot card (not a true rookie now but back then it was considered a rookie) and freaking pulled an elite series auto will Clark I think numbered to 5000 it was the first serial numbered card we had ever seen and again the shop owner offered me 200 bucks for it and gave me a box of series 1 donruss 93 which was like hitting the jack pot to me lol Not sure what that card is worth now maybe I made out like a bandit but back then i was on cloud 9 and I felt rich and to this day it’s one of the memories that keeps me connected to the hobby. It’s why I love ripping packs when I can

I’m not too into 90’s baseball since it’s not what I watched, but your talk on 90’s cards did get me interested in looking at 90’s football. My football PC is Washington Stare University and Eastern Washington University players in their college uniform. The 98 PMG’s feature the rookies in their college uniforms. So now I may be one of a few individuals on the hunt for a 98 Ryan Leaf PMG.

You are 100% right regarding super collectors, the rarity of the cards and market manipulations. I collect mainly NBA parallels from 97 and 98 but I usually search auction result of $2000 plus cards from 1997 and 1998. I guess the worst thing about this era is 1: Cards are rare (some cards of HOF players from iconic sets have not been sold for 10+ years) 2: The super collectors usually are grade and set chaser So, for instance, you collect a player, a PMG of him pop up after 10 years and it is a PSA 8 and none higher, then you are not only bidding against the collectors of that player but a bunch of sharks whom are willing to pay extra extra just because of the grade of the card. If you are lucky, then, since the sharks overpaid the PSA 8 someone holding the cards will a lower grade will be tempted to sell it and you can got that at a more reasonable price. But really there is no guarantee for that. (I just share a case like this and it is the a 1998 PMG of Alonzo Mourning, a PSA 8 was sold for $10980 and 1 month later a PSA 6 was sold for $4920)

It's ludicrous to grade any rare cards. If they're truly rare, then all they need is authenticated.

I grew up in the 90's yes, but the Brewers were absolutely one of the worst franchises in baseball until Wendy Selig-Preib finally sold the team. I have great memories of Jeff Cirillo, Jeremy Burnitz and Richie Sexson, sure, but Brewers collecting in those eras was atrocious. Some of the older guys I have collected include flagship cards of Hoffman and Sabathia during their Brewers run, and I was at Trevor Hoffman's 600th save, so there's a real connection there.

in 2046, do you really think a 21 year old will want to buy a 1983 Wade Boggs rookie? The only people buying junk era cards are people who grew up in it. Even today, no one wants to buy a 1973 card.
