Probably the 2 best cinema cameras still in 2023. Yes I consider the Sony a7s iii a cinema camera. Canon C70 has a lot going for it for super 35 sensor vs full frame, but in general for youtubers, the a7s iii is the easier and better camera.

The perfect camera, in theory, is the human eye. It has a sensor size of roughly 32mm, a dynamic range of roughly 22 stops, an aperture range of roughly f/2.1-f/8.3 with a rest aperture of roughly f/3.2, and its resolution of a 11"x8.5" rectangle at arms length is approximately 5k at maximum. With this in mind the bokeh of out of focus areas in full frame equivalence is roughly f/2.29 at our eye's widest aperture. So this begs the question why one would want more Toneh then that if the goal is the perfect camera?
@gruntaxeman3740
@gruntaxeman3740 Год назад
@@billyoung9538 Well, M4/3 and APS-C are enough large to get natural looking depth of field with fast lenses. Then you may want to have autofocus that works like in human eye, you will notice that Panasonic M4/3 cameras weights a lot and the size is the reason why you want to choose smaller one. Also when shooting video you like to grade it and OM-Log isn't found yet on software. When looking APS-C cameras, they just don't look that impressive if you want your rolling shutter to work in 8-15ms range, or less. And then you need good lenses. Aspheric lenses often makes that background blur look terrible. I've tried to find good camera between full frame and 1" for versatile videography but I need more than smaller size compared to full frame.

I've got a heck of a story to tell about the A7sIII and I can say VERY confidently... it's quite overrated AF! Coming from Canon and Blackmagic, I bought the A7sIII after being so influenced by the internet where it's almost impossible to find anything negative about it and boy was I let down! Sony's video compression, even when using the All-I at maximum bitrate, 4K, etc, is really poor. Where I really wanted to test it is for the low light situations since almost every camera nowadays already looks good if you shoot in broad sunny daylight, and plus everyone kept claiming/ swearing up & down that it is the low light king and all that.... yet the footage I shot in low light was all noisy and mooshy coz of sony's mp4 compression! And YES I researched/ used all the correct optimum/ native ISOs for S-log3, shoot it few stops overexposed, etc. My video tests were really extensive using a Sony native lens and everything was really just subpar. I mean it's just 'ok', but it really doesn't line up with the praises people claim. The footage was NOWHERE as clean people say! When I pointed that out in a FB group, these idiots just claimed my camera was spoiled or I just over-pixel-peeped, when in fact I was just viewing all my test footage at 100% on a 27" monitor! I swear people/ idiots ignorantly don't wanna hear anything bad/ wrong about this camera whatsoever! And shockingly I found that 2nd Native lowlight ISO 12800 is IN FACT overblown and overrated - the footage is clean BUT there is a forced DNR applied that you cannot disable and detail is lost by like 25%! That is seriously unacceptable and I truly wonder if the people (over)praising the camera are only JUST making youtube/ social media videos with it, where no one would actually see real details and would only view the stuff on phone-screens and nothing bigger. I even ended up questioning the credibility of youtubers like geraldUD, dpreview etc. If you use this thing for like commercials or anything professional, then it really needs very bright lights to assist it for clean pro-footage, BUT then again, ANY camera will look great when you've got production lights, correct? If there's anything good I gotta say about the A7sIII honestly is that in color grading, I was impressed by the highlight recovery as it reminded me a bit of using RAW video. Shadows however, is where I'd give it a huge F on the report card. As for the Autofocus, yeah it is reliable and at least that one met my expectation. It's not perfect as it can still hunt around when lighting is challenging (happens to all cameras anyhow) but I'd still call it usable for professional use. Wanna hear another truth? I actually bought the Panasonic S5 before this camera and my god, the low light in that camera was VASTLY superior to the A7sIII and no one mentions it! The ISO performance in the S5 was what I expected in the sony. I mean it doesn't hv a second native ISO, true, but even when using ISOs like 3200, it is seriously clean in low light and you can recover some detail without producing much noise! Same result if you use it for stills! The A7sIII looks horrible on said ISO and above, all the way up to the 2nd native ISO of cos. Actually, even on ISO 800 and 640 (A7sIII), I found there to be running noise I didn't like as well, and yes the S5 did better on those ISO levels too! Clearly the only thing the S5 lacked was video-autofocus [which has now been rectified in newer models of cos!] As for stills on the A7sIII, I didn't mind that it only produced 12mp, so long as the ARW quality was good but man it was the same horrid results! The same noise problems were apparent in all the same ISOs and yup, the S5 outperformed it in those same areas but nuff said. I've STILL kept all those huge GIGs of A7sIII video test footage to remind myself how unacceptable the footage was and as a reminder to myself that even if seemingly majority of the internet claims something, it does NOT mean it's ever true! Period! Anyhow I ended selling the A7sIII and went over to Canon's R5C and I was very impressed with the video footage that camera produced + all the many video resolution settings it had + Internal RAW video! It overall had way better bitrate and far better compression than the A7sIII! The S5 I'll say was STILL cleaner in higher ISOs (NO JOKE!) than the R5C but that's where the R5C's 2nd native ISO 3200 comes in real handy! Finally I was very content on both video quality and autofocus.

You mean “Why 90% of Photographers that shoot video Chose Sony A7S III Over Canon C70” The C70 is a Cinema camera made for Videographers. It has ND filters built in, you don’t have to use screw in filters. The image quality of the c70 looks different than the a7s III. The C70 has a cinematic look compare to the a7s III digital look. The skin tone look better on the C70. If you want to look like a Photographer shooting video then buy the a7s III. The C70 doesn’t look like a Toy. The Canon C70 is more expensive, but it´s another level. You get what you pay!
@gruntaxeman3740
@gruntaxeman3740 Год назад
That is not correct. I can have cinematic look in my tiny ZV-1, with good skin tone (sure I got color checker). I also can have film emulation too in post process. That cinematic look is relatively easy to get: 1. Shoot 24fps 2. 180 degree shutter rule (shutter speed to 1/48 or 1/50) 3. You may need ND filter to adjust wide aperture to get those 4. Shoot with wider dynamic range, like film capture 5. Set image sharpening in camera off Sony has the very same sensor in a7s III that is found cinemaline FX3 and FX6. Build in ND filters are found in FX6. Camera body is just slightly different, aimed for different users. And that sensor is excellent. Main difference in Sony a7s III vs FX3 is that Sony a7s III there is viewfinder and FX3 is easier to put own cinemarig.
@gruntaxeman3740
@gruntaxeman3740 Год назад
Oh... One mor e thing that make "digital look".. is of course slow rolling shutter. If sensor readout is too slow, it makes the footage to look artificial, cheap and restless. That is not issue in a7s III sensor.
@LatinPerspective.

@@gruntaxeman3740: A Bayer filter is the secret behind the colour in digital images generated by most, if not all, colour digital cameras. Camera manufacturers tweak this filter to make the colours appear unique. The Bayer filters in canon cameras hold the secret of “Canon colour science” Sony video most of the time are too sharp and that make the video look “Digital”.
@gruntaxeman3740
@gruntaxeman3740 11 месяцев назад
@@LatinPerspective. Well, older Sony cameras got 3CCD setup, and early Super35 they got 3x more resolution horizontally and have RGB strips where every pixel got own R, G and B. I believe thay have been using bayer filter since they switched to CMOS. I'm also aware that it requires more resolution in capture to produce good footage, like shooting 4k to get good FullHD, and shooting 8k to get good 4k. But that sharpness, in Sony picture profiles has sharpness by default, that can be adjusted to -7. So if I want to shoot good FullHD, I shoot 4k and have 2px gaussian blur to soften to it (it helps in compression!). If this is uploaded to RU-vid in 4k, RU-vid compress that to around 20Mbit/s so it looks as good as FullHD can look. I'll check my color with color checker anyway that I got it right and there is no issues in Sony to get it look cinematic.

That sad piano note after you said "...Canon seems to care..." was spot on. You worked a mom comment in there nicely.... I watched one of those ".. A7S II still good in 2023..." videos the other day. Even at that 12 MP level it did well with photography. As long as you're not cropping like Edward Scissors Hands or printing an image too large it does a great job. I was always under the impression that the glass was way too expensive for me. But, I've seen more recently that might not be true. And, there is a nice selection. Down the road when I'm ready I may just have to consider a used Sony for photography. By the time I'm ready the A7IV or V might be available at decent prices. Right now I'm still using the used X-T3 I bought back in 2020. I really like it, but would like to move to FF some day. Thanks for the morning laughs once again. Have a great weekend.

As long as you don't shoot 4k video. I can't recommend camera without good 4k recording because in solo team, it is extremely valuable to shoot 4k and use slow zoom in postprocess instead of using dolly. Also it gives more room in editing or effects if need to do some composite, avoiding moire and so on. And why A6700 is not that good on 4k, it is because the rolling shutter. Never buy camera for video that can't shoot 8..15ms rolling shutter. And shoot higher resolution where you are targetting. Edit: A6700 is fine for FullHD video capture, rolling shutter is then minimal.

Dual C70 owner here. The a7s III is the best mirrorless cam in the business and is a incredible value. The a7s III though i think doesn't work out the box as a "cinema cam", not that it's a problem for the majority of users. However some professionals will have to rig it out and once that is done you have a rig that is equal to or more than the size/weight of the c70. I really love that we have the c300 mk3 sensor, the best dynamic range under the 7k mark, great colors, multiple lens options (rf/ef), incredible battery life and internal raw on cheap sd cards. The last part is a big deal since it eliminates more traditional cinema cam rigs that are more restrictive or expensive as well as avoiding the hassle of external recorders. If you check the used market now you can get some c70s for under the 4500 range.

Hmm.. Zoom lens for at 16-50 (35mm equivalent) to get enough view for tight rooms is essential. And those wide lenses are better on M4/3 or APS-C than in fullframe. So it is the lens that matters here. And when shooting interior scene is static so camerabody doesn't matter as it can be put on tripod or shoot series of images to blend to minimize noise. I think good cameraphone is not bad at all as they got enough intelligent shooting to blend series of images and got wide angle lens. Just need stable hand.

Neither term makes any sense because these things can't take any film. Why is C70 a cinema camera then? Because they say so? Although, Sony claims the same for F3(0). Aren't internal NDs a rather new thing in these so called cinema cameras? I think it used to be more of an ENG/broadcast thing. I agree that C70 might be a better tool for many professional jobs. @@hbp_ nobody is shaming the fx30. Good camera. The term “cinema” is largely useless, but for what is usually associated with the terminology. For instance, if a video focused hybrid has full size HDMI for output, it is more geared towards professional video work. So too with internal NDs, xlr inputs, etc. I have zero issue with the fx3 or the fx30. Good cameras, but effectively retooled a7s3s and one is apsc. I left Sony because of color science and time in post processing, menus, and ergonomics. I think a fair distinguishing point between a mirrorless video centric camera and a cinema camera are the tools professionals need, such as internal NDs, good onboard sound science, and so on. If you can’t honestly understand the differences beyond simply that two cameras can deliver similar dynamic range for video, the distinction is ultimately meaningless. @@gruntaxeman3740 this is my first full frame camera so I can't really speak to other ones. I wanted something as compact as APS-C but with better background/foreground separation and the ZV-E1 fit the bill. I use it with largely lenses that are smaller/lighter than APS-C lenses but I'm getting far superior performance. I recorded a video about this on my channel. However I do have 2 larger lenses, the Tamron 70-300mm, it's actually longer than the Fuji equivalent, but lighter :) - and the Viltrox 16mm F1.8 because I've been so impressed with the Viltrox 13mm F1.4 on APS-C - it feels great on the ZV-E1, but that lens is a bit too heavy for day to day carry where the Samyang 18mm F2.8 fits the bill.

@gruntaxeman3740 Год назад
@@DigiDriftZone Sure the full frame lenses weight, it doesn't matter how big the camera body is :) You can shoot photo or handheld video by supporting lens other hand using focus ring and other hand in camerabody. But I thought videography, where you want to stablize the footage. What happens if you have camera on tripod and using focus by touching screen and you don't support that 70-300mm lens using hand? Or you use autofocus where camera is in gimbal or you got handle in rig? So the question mark for me is that is the camera body some solid metal block or how its body structure holds up heavy lens? I think this requires long term testing to see if there is some material fatigue. I have no doubts about ZV-E1 image quality, as it is same sensor that is on a7s III, FX3 and FX6. That sensor is beast.
@DigiDriftZone

@@gruntaxeman3740 Full frame lenses are actually smaller and lighter if you look for equivalents vs APS-C, you don't have to go for those heavy GM zooms :) - I recorded a video about it on my channel if you're interested. My full frame set up is smaller/lighter and cheaper than my previous APS-C setup - but way better results obviously and way better background/foreground separation. The setup is so ridiculously light you just hold it with 2 fingers free hand and use dynamic stabe built into the camera (it's like GoPro but works surprisingly well at 1/50s shutter), or otherwise use the motion data to stabilise in post. You can use a tiny lightweight tripod too if you like. I don't bother with gimbals as you can get gimbal like footage if you're careful with dynamic stabe or use catalyst browse. I haven't touched my gimble in months. The auto focus is telepathic thanks to that AI chip, you only need to adjust it say from a human to an animal, or you may need to register a face on the camera if you want the camera to prioritise a specific face (it has face recognition!). For centre focus I mapped a button to quickly switch focus modes, you also have the product showcase button if you want the camera to focus on whatever is nearer, you can then toggle it on/off for many kinds of focus pulls, very neat! The camera feels plasticky and cheap, but even with heavy lenses, the lens mount is beefy and everything feels super solid. The heaviest lens I tested is the 550g Viltrox 13mm F1.8 though. I wanted to downsize from my previous APS-C setup (ironic that full frame was the way to do it!) :)

I believe biggest reason is that Canon have dumb idea to change lens mount to something that is not accepted (or allowed, I don't know) third party manufacturers. Real dumbass move when Sony was pushing those incredibly great camerabodies and you can find lenses from other manufacturers. Canon should have create something like new open specification & standard lensmount, open to everyone, have even 3D-printable files if someone one to create own lens in kitchen and use this lensmount for competition, as they are making excellent lenses. They could have easily 3-5 years of time to improve camera body and sensor without worrying competition because people want to invest camera system that lasts as long their previous EF-mount. For full frame small cinema camera, I'm pretty sure that some FX3 + Sigma Art 24-70mm + ND filter is at the moment excellent choice.

@gruntaxeman3740

Well, if you upload 4k video to RU-vid, it is compressed so heavily that is looks same as good FullHD. That means that you can have similar quality by upscaling good quality FullHD to 4k before uploading. Idea of shooting 4k is editing. Slow digital zooming in 4k can do same effect as using dolly but much easier. Also sensor resolution need to be at least 4k because of bayer filter. Also it helps a lot in chroma keying. Of course if target is 4k, you can have benefit using some 8k Sony Venice if you show your movie in silver screen. Distance in television is usually longer that human eye resolution is not enough to benefit 4k. Large desktop computer monitor at arm distance can show good 4k. Just stream from harddrive and not from RU-vid.

@@bestintentions6089 "Missing" dynamic range can be mitigated. I don't shoot raw but I got idea how to get everything out of log shooting. I just shoot using HLG gamma with Rec709 color gamut, and I created LUT to transform this footage to linear ACES. Sure I can white balance it before shooting what I want. Like adjusting it warmer, colder or neutral. This would not waste bits by trying capture larger color gamut, because that is the very issue when shooting log. But because target is FullHD and I want to save bits in compression, I can squeeze more dynamic range from that slight sensor noise by using 2pix gaussian blur after transform, if I do zooming/panning in post process. All calculations are anyways done in 32-bit. So that 100Mbit/s 4k 24fps HLG gamma / Rec709 gamut source can look pretty nice and allow enough information to grading. When it is compressed to ~20Mbit/s what is required for good FullHD, you can take advantage of extra bits.
