Executive Chancellor and Provost of the University of California at San Francisco, Dr. Dan Lowenstein, speaks about the importance of pursuing and finding a cure for epilepsy, how research will lead us to that cure and why it is necessary to fund epilepsy research.
1 in 26 Americans will develop epilepsy in their lifetime. An estimated 3.4 million Americans and 65 million people worldwide live with epilepsy. In its 25 years of supporting groundbreaking research, CURE Epilepsy has raised over $90 million to fund 285 grants in 18 countries. Our mission is to find a cure for epilepsy.
We have got to find a cure for epilepsy. There are so many individuals that suffer
from this disease, and it affects their family members and the loved ones around them. Despite all the remarkable advances that have been made over decades now, there are still too many people who suffer from uncontrolled seizures. And even when the seizures are controlled, they have side effects from the therapies that are offered. The only path to coming up with a cure is to be able to figure out how the human brain works and what goes wrong when a seizure occurs.
