Side Epilogue: Jonathan Wild actually survived that neck stab. However, as the man who sent Jack Shepard to the gallows his reputation was ruined. His criminal empire was exposed, his underlings betrayed him, and he was sentenced to death. He had a mental breakdown in prison and tried to kill himself with laudanum. He slipped into a coma and they hanged his unconscious body.

You skimmed over my favorite part. When Bess and Jack escape together, Bess wasn't strong enough to scale the wall, so Jack climbed down the prison wall, up the exterior wall, and then back down to the ground... with Bess on his back like a sex worker Yoda. This next detail is from the newspapers at the time so it'a probably exaggerated but supposedly Jack grew up so poor and malnourished that he was barely five feet tall. Bess was, supposedly, almost a foot taller and nearly twice his weight. Even if she wasn't, what a chad move.

@silenthunteruk

Bess looks rather familar... Anyway, some notes from me. 1. Newgate was on the site of what is today the Central Criminal Court aka 'The Old Bailey'. 2. Theatre censorship was still a thing until 1968; all plays and theatrical needed to be approved by the Lord Chamberlain's Office. One producer basically managed to convince the Lord Chamberlain that nudity itself wasn't obscene... as long as the naked people were playing statues. Thus giving birth to the Windmill Girls, with a number of well known post-war comedians getting their debuts at the theatre in the process. In the 1960s, theatres wanting to put on controversial works turned themselves into private clubs for the duration. The whole thing got a bit ridiculous at that point and the censorship. 3. Public executions were still being done after the first part of the London Underground opened.

I mean, if you consider demanding no grain be planted for a year, murdering pregnant women and their husbands, demanding no cows be milked, killing cattle just so their calves would know what it's like to lose a mother, and murdering thousands for not grieving enough after his mothers death to mean he's a momma's boy then sure. Then again there's a certain irony that he also once locked a rival's mother in a hut filled with hungry jackals and then set it on fire while they were eating her alive... or maybe he didn't, who knows? The upside and downside of oral histories, we get some crazy ass stories but no way to prove they ever actually happened. Among others he was imprisoned in a wooden tower Rapunzel style and managed to vowe one of his guards to slip him a kitchen knife with which he cut a whole through the wall of said tower and somehow managed to get down from it unscathed. After a couple of more escapes, daring robberies and attacks on frenchmen he assumed a new alias and joined an anti french army, however ended up betrayed and handed over to them instead. After his fiancée being attained by the french and threatened with public execution he buckled in and gave away 19 of his comrades as well as himself to safe her and was finally executed by guillotine drawing a crowd of 40thousand onlookers that wanted to accompany the last walk of the beloved "butcher of the french"

In an extremely roundabout way, Jack Sheppard is sort of almost on a Netflix a little. "Unbelievable" is a show on Netflix. In said show, one of the characters sings "Mack the Knife," which comes from the "Threepenny Opera" (1924), itself based on the "Beggar's Opera" (1728). In that play, the character Macheath (who eventually becane Mack the Knife) is directly based on Jack.

I like how you do people from across the world but the only time you actually attach an accent to the person is when they're British.

Occasionally if they're French as well, but British accents are just so much fun!

1:58 I think we all know what the Muffin Man was doing by the time Jack Sheppard came along. He was buttering some of those muffins, of course.

He really Shepherded in a new age of law in Britain with his antics. Even if we here in the U.S. never learn Jack about him.

As to WHY a career thief was becoming a local hero? This series of events happened during/after the South Sea Bubble popped, which left many without a penny to their name and pissed off at any one who held a position of power. A.k.a. Johnathan Wilde
