Why A Removable eBike Battery Is Important - Or Not!

Neil Donoghue dives into his thoughts on the pros and cons of non-removable batteries in eMTBs. While fully integrated batteries are sleek and can offer a lighter frame deisgn, they can make charging and maintenance less convenient, especially for riders without easy access to power where they store the bike. As eBike tech evolves with better battery range and faster chargers, will non-removable batteries become the standard of the future?

What do you think about removable or non-removable batteries?

Give me a bolt on anyday, I love being able to take the battery inside after each ride. Keeping a battery in nicer conditons and temps is far better for it.

It's not a deal breaker for me but it's much easier to charge them off the bike, and I would miss the ability to reduce the bike's weight getting it in and out the car. Although not the best aesthetically the externally mounted batteries are still the most practical design (apart from the loss of a bottle cage).

Definitely removable for me due to storage issues and if anything goes wrong with battery it’s a simple swap no bike shop required But on a different note the non removable does make a more sleek finish to the frame

Non removable battery is absolutely no go for me. My bike storage is without heating, and I don't want to store battery in freezing temperature during winter.

Yes, agreed. Batteries should be "standard" and interchangeable between bikes - sure make 2-3 standards, but no "vendor locking".

Non removable is out of the question. Cold winters in Norway. And more than one bike on car bike rack. Also it needs to be removable without turning your bike upside down. Love my Scott Genious.

I won’t purchase an EMTB without a battery that can be quickly swapped. I almost always leave the house with 2 batteries on my weekend rides. I can burn through both 630wh batteries in about 4-5 hours, depending on where I’m riding.

Good summary. I’m intrigued by the comment about future tech coming that will make removable batteries as light as the non-removables ones. The only way I can see that happening is with a modular battery (within the downtube), which is something I’ve been touting for a while. Imagine allowing riders to choose between a 300, 600, or combined 900 wh battery for their ride. You could take the lighter option for a session on the dirt jumps or bike park and then go for a bike adventure ride the next day on the stacked 900. This only works on a battery system that is easily removable. I’m just not a fan of external range extenders that take the spot of the water bottle and add the weight higher up on the bike.

Actually they're is talk about lighter batteries period. Another words a 900 wh battery that is lighter then todays 900 wh battery.

Would not buy a bike without a removable battery. Mainly for fitting the 2nd at lunchtime for a full days riding. However as you mentioned, when super fast charging is a thing, like the new amflow bike, a fixed battery would bother me less.

My Trek Rail makes battery charging after those sloppy winter FoD night rides an absolute cinch! Nice toasty warm study that's maintained at 18°C means the battery is at the optimum temperature for taking in charge. It's only very recently have I bothered charing the battery in the garage, now that I've rearranged the space so that it's more efficient. But that's taken me 3 years. It's also ideal for just making the thing easier to handle when you're lugging it onto the roof, or even the boot after a wet ride! Energy density vs weight of cells is plodding along nicely, but even for a lower torque motored ebike, having the option to slide it out of its svelte tube wouldn't go amiss.

Well, in cold climates it's better to yank the battery and store it inside at a suitable charge level. It will also give you slightly better range once you brave the snow, ice and sub zero degrees to scratch that itch to ride 😁 And another thing, with an EV with V2L or any car plus inverter, you can charge it when going from one trail to another, having a lunch brake at a shuttle spot in the wild etc...

Here in Australia if you want to fly with your bike the battery has to be removed, if it’s under 160w/h it can come in your hand luggage and handily the same spec as specialized range extender. The larger battery has to go by road transport. The Kenevo sl is a bit of a pain to remove/ install.

Living in Michigan where we get months of below freezing temperatures, having an ebike with a removable battery is a minimum requirement for me. My house is also from 1924 and wrangling inside my Transition Relay (easily removable battery) would be a major PITA.

Living near the rocky mountains here in Alberta, there's simply no market for non-removable battery EMTB's......below zero nights can start early Oct and run through until late April annually....bringing the battery inside for charging and/or storage on cold nights protects the investment we made in the bike.

@@barneyklingenberg4078 Yes it's a pain in the butt but, the point is it is still removable. So while it is a factor all is not lost. There are reason for that type of setup both good and bad. That being said My current battery is removable the easy way. However it doesn't currently get removed often and yes would be pretty much a no go when I was running two batteries.

Removable is a must. I don't think I could own an ebike with a non-removable battery, unless they start making some truly large batteries. My Norco Range VLT has a 900wh and I have spares. If I want to do a 50+ mile ride, I have to change batteries. I have an Evoc trail E-ride pack for my spare. .

Was waiting to hear about whether you can ride with the batteries dropped out or not. Missed it! It;s easy enough to remove my battery from my Marin Alpine Trail, but you can’t ride without it per manufacturer. Imagine that is the case with others too; however, would be interested to hear which ones can effectively convert quickly to an analog bike ready to ride trails that don’t allow e-bikes, or just to drop some weight for some trail riding.

I had the funds to buy a newer orbea wild but bought the older version simply so i could remove the battery for security (less likely to be nicked)-storage reasons (keeping cells temp controlled when not in use ) and charging at b&b’s (just way more convenient)… the alternative gains aren’t big enough to consider a fixed battery.

At first I thought, non removable means when your battery expires , your 5-$10,000 bike is done. Like a Tesla. But he mentioned right away that is not easily removable which is fine. Now, the most important reason I can think of to have a battery easily and quickly removable is in the case of a compromised battery either from damage or over charged/discharged in which lithium batteries are know to catch fire. It needs to be easy to quickly remove and save the rest of the bike from burning.
@SonnyDarvishzadeh
@SonnyDarvishzadeh 3 дня назад
I don't know any ebike from reputable brand in Europe to catch fire. It would be a massive news here. Even without insurance and warranty, the brand will likely replace eveything for you to save their own reputation.
@kraigvanderwyk1153
@kraigvanderwyk1153 День назад
Will they replace your garage, house or your life? I’ve personally seen several lithium batteries burn. I’ve seen entire businesses burned. Maybe it hasn’t happened yet in the bike would, or at least reported on. But that doesn’t make my point any less valid IMHO.

Gotta be removable for storage, security, ease of charging, transporting, maintenance etc. Manufacturers need to improve weather protection on motors and battery covers. EMtb users tend not to be avid weight weenies so the non removable option seems irrelevant. IMHO.

I've been thinking about bike parks, especially in Germany 🇩🇪. Many bike parks don't allow lithium batteries 🔋 on their trails, and some even prohibit them on their lift systems 🚠. If you frequently ride at these locations, I would personally prefer a bike setup with a removable battery. Otherwise, you might have to rent a bike each time or even invest in a second bike specifically for bike parks. I'm still waiting for the Amflow to see if it matches all the positive reviews! 🌟 My old Trek Fuel Ex5 Gen 3 has 5000 and some kilometres on it, and it's in the pit all the time.

How am I supposed to charge it then? My car and bicycle parking don't have AC outlets. Bosch stopped producing 12V (car socket) charger long time ago and many brands don't have them at all. E-bikes are massive and I can't bring mine up 2 floors to the apartment using staircase for every charge. Not everyone has a lift and mine is very small. If for whatever reason I end up buying a non-removable battery e-bike, it at least must have: 1. Mechanic still can replace it easily if needed. 2. I need a fast DC charger (from 12 or 24V batteries, same as car cigarette socket). Solar chargers are an option, but my e-bike has a 800Wh battery (has 2nd slot for another 800) and a solar charger of at least 1000Wh is very expensive (600 to 800 euros). In comaprison, a 100Ah LFP battery is as cheap as 200 euros. So a 100 euro ebike DC adaper is the only missing piece that stops me buying their 5 grand ebikes with non-removable batteries.

Really hoping AMFLOW releases a version with easy replacement otherwise NICOLAI SATURN is also very tempting, imagine the range on 2 x 960Wh 🤤. I guess it depends on the regularities of the race, Johannes Fischbach was allowed to do so on the "urban downhill race" in chile. Non removable battery limits a lot ebike transport. If it's raining and cold or too hot, it's preferable to remove the battery and carry it inside the car. I won't drop a motor to remove the battery. It seems to me that you need a battery to be dockable, or it's worthless. My e-bike is actually 20 years old! It's a "Currie". Nobody makes them anymore. I've changed it from a 24 V lead acid battery with a 400W motor to a 48V lithium battery pack with a 1kW hub motor. It does 28 mph with over 20 miles range. Today it's illegal because it goes too fast. 🤣
