Throughout the majority of its history, Texans often had to fight for their freedom and Texan military culture is deeply embedded in what makes Texas, Texas. The Lone Star has been the site of numerous famous battles but these iconic historical events were not just limited to land though, as Texas also has a long history connected to Naval Warfare. In fact, the history of several discontinued warships still lives on in Texas as there still remain several ships, each with a long story to tell long after their service. This begs the question though, what happened to these abandoned warships that led to them laying dormant in the waters of Texas?

Battleship Texas is NOT abandoned. They are in the process of a 30-40 million dollar restoration project. When she is fully restored, she will be moored in a new location with higher amounts of traffic. I've also heard that an accompanying museum will be built alongside her future berth. The long term goal of this project is to be able to generate enough cash to keep up with her annual required maintenance, which I've heard is two million dollars every year. She will NOT return to her existing berth at the San Jacinto battleground. She will go into dry dock at the Gulf Copper shipyard in Galveston in August of this year. She would've already been in dry dock, but the shipyard did not possess a dry dock that was capable of lifting her out of the water. The dry dock that will accomplish this task arrived at the shipyard in Galveston about two weeks ago. Mid August is the current estimate for when the dry dock and the shipyard will be ready to perform the monumental task of fully restoring her hull. She is expected to be in dry dock for 12 months. I plan on being there to see her be towed out of her berth at San Jacinto for the last time. She hasn't left her current berth since 1989.

It's important to note that the Battlefield Texas is not abandoned by any means and is scheduled to go into drydock this year for much needed repairs and restorations of spaces onboard are active as we speak. It may be closed to the public, but is not abandoned.

As a few others have pointed out, the Texas has never been "abandoned". Poor maintenance by those who had the best of intentions, yes, but never abandoned. As of the other day, it's scheduled to be moved to Galveston late July early August for an extensive drydock. They are also in the process of finding a new home post-drydock. The ship also participated in the invasion of Mexico prior to entry in WWI, so WWI was not it's first military action.

Odd choice for a lineup. The Texas is not abandoned and will head to Galveston for repairs soon but if she meets the criteria for your video then the Lexington, Cavala and the Stuart should definitely make your list too. The Cavala is the avenger of Pearl Harbor having sunk the largest carrier that participated in Pearl Harbor and the Stuart that escorted FDRs yacht to the Iowa so he could go plan the D-Day invasion with the other allied leaders meeting in Iran among other things. The Blue Ghost lady Lex is an amazing experience with a rumored ghost haunting the engine room (my kind of guy).

Texas is what can be called a 'super dreadnought' i.e. the 2nd proper generation of dreadnought style battleships. Also when it comes to 'dreadnought' that really just refers to an all big gun layout instead of the older style that had layer after layer of surface oriented gun (the French went so far as septenary batteries). Texas is one of several dreadnoughts left (if you are using dreadnought in the more general sense). For example the Iowa's and South Dakota class ships still around. When it comes to "last left" that would be Mikasa, the only remaining pre-dreadnought. NO first generation dreadnoughts exist anymore. Steam turbines are a feature of naval development at the time of HMS Dreadnought and she was the first capital ship to get them. However this is something that goes across the board and is not confined to the biggest ships. caveat: "all big gun" might be confusing to some people because they obviously have smaller guns. Pre-dreadnought battleships would have a big turret on the front and one on the rear, then a somewhat smaller secondary battery and smaller tertiary battery and so on. With dreadnoughts there will be 3 or more turrets and the gap between the size of those and the size of the next smaller guns will be huge in comparison to what pre-dreadnoughts had. The idea is that the main offensive power of the ship is all big guns. Not that it only has big guns.
@thewordisgood1544
@thewordisgood1544 2 года назад
Battleship Texas is the last Dreadnought ship remaining. The other American Battleship museum ships are considered Fast Battleships.
@ChaplainDMK
@ChaplainDMK 2 года назад
All big gun was more a concept for the first generation of Dreadnoughts that kind of disappeared after WWI as more varied threats appeared needing different weapons. But in 1906 the Dreadnought only had 3" guns for anti torpedo boat work, and the main 12" guns. But by WWI most Dreadnoughts already had 5-6" caliber secondary guns and a few anti aircraft guns, and by WWII you even had ships like the Yamato with 8", 6" and 5" secondaries.
@whyjnot420
@whyjnot420 2 года назад
@@thewordisgood1544 "Fast" battleships are only a product of increasing the speed without screwing over the armor or firepower of other, slower designs. Iowas would be fast both in comparison to older ships and the proposed Montana class (28ish kn). Yet had battleship development continued and given that we see carriers that can move faster than any of the battleships made while displacing 2x more than any USN battleship (at standard load, not full, if full then it would be slightly less than 2x), you can bet that there would be designs that made an Iowa look slow. (yes yes, carriers are an evolution of cruisers, hence the C in CV, but the point remains). South Dakotas are not "fast" when you compare them to an Iowa, afterall an Iowa is literally 25% faster than a SoDak. Though they were fast in comparison to the standards. Which are 25% slower than the SoDaks. (33 kn vs 27 kn vs 21 kn)

Battleship Texas, BB-35, actually saw action before her shake down cruise actually. She went down as the strongest ship in the world to force the release of sailors in the gulf. She went back to finish her shake down afterwards. She was only only the strongest ship for a year before the new HMS Dreadnoughts popped up. But also she is not abandoned, we have been working on her minor pieces before she heads back down to Galveston for a major restoration before a new company takes it to a new location. I live less than ten minutes from her and have watched the work on her all my life both on her deck and off. I also had a store for a decade down on Galveston strand district that was for taking old styled photos. A lot of the history you mentioned here was accurate. Interestingly the Selma was one of many concrete ships done to see the effectiveness, one is still being used as a floating hotel in South America I believe.

The USS Texas battleship didn't have a sexy role in guarding against subs (most people would think). But my father was a submariner, he would even defend the courage of ships at the time to take on a sub. You have to have steely balls to take on U-boats at that time for sure. There are multiple factors in warfare on the open seas and oceans. But to boldly guard vessels with the possibility of getting hit/sunk yourself is astronomical. You have to understand submarine history of sorts to know when they were feared greatly and when they were less of a threat to a random vessel on the water line.

No surprise to me that the Texas is haunted. Here in Charleston, S.C., we have two haunted ships in the second Yorktown (the first one was sunk during the Battle of Midway),and, the destroyer Laffey know as THE SHIP THAT WOULD NOT DIE(she earned this title after surviving numerous kamikaze attacks during the Battle of Okinawa). Check out Walter Cronkite's story of his his being on the Texas during the invasion of North Africa in his autobiography A REPORTER'S LIFE(his story of how he beat a competitor reporter back to the U.S. is something one must read)🌞🌞🌞✌✌✌✌
