Why Aespa's Coachella DIDN'T Work 

To any "Why bring this up??" comment: Aespa's Coachella happened a year ago, which I did not have a channel at that time making BLACKPINK'S return to Coachella a good opportunity for me to talk about the prior controversial performance. This video is NOT me personally bashing on Aespa as I specifically said in the video, I am just looking back at the opinions made over the last year of Aespa's overpromised performance (which is a fact, SM definitely oversold their performance which i SHOULD have mentioned in the video but failed to.) But long story short, I made this video because it is topical for a KPOP channel and I am only making these videos for discussion, and that is what's happening.

I personally think that they should've waited, I love aespa but I have to agree they lack in stage presence, and their popular in the western side isn't that popular unlike blackpink they were popularized in the west and once they performed in coachella they just popular. Plus, I think blackpink had more stage presence, and their aura captivated more viewers not saying aespa didn't. But in conclusion, I think aespa should've performed in more live stages, worked on sp and dance, and performed/promoted in the west before they went to coachella then, it probably wouldn't end up like this.

For the record, I think a lot of people have forgotten what really happened. Aespa did okay for what they did. There was never a good reason to compare their performance to Blackpink's because Aespa wasn't really there as a major or significant act. Blackpink was specifically invited by Coachella to perform a full concert. Aespa was not even directly invited by Coachella. An Asian-focus production company, 88 Rising, contracted with Coachella to put on a variety show of various Asian acts. SM got a short spot for Aespa in the 88 Rising variety show. Each act just did a few songs for 10 ~ 15 minutes and then had to hurry off stage for then next act to set up. (2NE1's "reunion" performance (about 2 or 3 songs) was part of the same variety show.) It was no big deal. It was a chance for Aespa to get some publicity and experience performing in America. Expectations shouldn't have been super high. The problem was the way that SM media-played it. For weeks before Coachella, SM was constantly bragging about how Aespa was going to Coachella at a higher level than Blackpink. They made a big deal out of the fact that Aespa would perform on the "Main Stage" while Blackpink "only" performed on a side stage (actually a very good stage called the "Sahara Stage"). SM didn't tell anyone that Aespa was just going there to be part of the 88 Rising variety show. Aespa fans started ridiculing Blackpink and bragged about how their rookie group was already "beating" Blackpink by being a bigger deal at Coachella than Blackpink. So of course, there were big expectations. Then, when they actually performed, people thought it was weird. They only did a few songs. Their stage was simple. There wasn't a big audience. The reality was that the 88 Rising show was not a headliner or sub-headliner show. It was just a kind of filler entertainment during a time slot when the Main Stage wasn't being used by any major acts. Most people weren't there specifically to watch Aespa at all. The Main Stage area is just like a main lobby area for the Coachella complex, so people just walking by while waiting for shows of major acts could stop and watch the variety show. Aespa themselves didn't do anything spectacular and also didn't do anything wrong. But SM set them up in a ridiculous situation by doing ridiculous media play that made them sound like headliners (when they were actually just part of a random variety show) and SM made it worse by constantly comparing to Blackpink and making it sound like Aespa was going to perform on a more important stage than Blackpink, literally often referring to Blackpink's stage as a "side stage" and Aespa's stage as THE MAIN STAGE, in a dishonest and misleading way.

Lack of LIVE stage experience contributed to Aespa not standing out at Coachella 2022. Even in Korea they haven't performed much on LIVE stages (mostly due to COVID). Aespa performed well at Coachella 2022 but not to the extent that they stood out from the pack. Blackpink performed on LIVE stages a lot in Korea and in Asia prior to Coachella 2019 and they were ready to go by the time the big event came. If Aespa comes back to Coachella in 2 or 3 years they'll be ready to slay the stage with more LIVE stage experience under their belt.

First of all I was there that day, the crowd was huge and they all cheered for them, idiots just take videos from kilometre and they say dead crowd, THERE WAS NOT A DEAD CROWD. 2- secondly, that year there wasn't many people in general especially the second week aka the week of their performance, travis scott litterly got out from stage and cut his performance for the lack of audience, 3- aespa's fans had no way to get in since aespa were announced too late for their performance and at the second week which made it impossible to find tickets since they are all sold out, 4- aespa was just a guest performance aka they shouldn't exceed 15 minutes since they are not the main event they were just a part from the main event, they have no right to do anything to the stage since they are just there as a guest performers 5- they were just there to promote themselves and it worked since Ningning trended 4th worldwide and kept trending for a week and a half and she trended locally too after Coachella, as the blonde girl with the black dress, and aespa in general got more than 300k followers in Instagram after their performance, so their performance was a hit actually

I think people misunderstand the purpose of the event..The event was made to highlight biggest artists and UP-AND-COMING MUSICIANS. In this case, aespa was a new group at that time and its a good method to promote their music in the west..

i’m tired of kpop stans constantly talking shit about aespa. they performed at coachella one year into their career. they did amazing and sang live and it was one of their first times performing infront of a crowd you can’t fucking compare their performance to bp because bp had been performing a lot in front of crowds. also you can’t compare the crowd too because bp’s performance was announced months in advance so blinks had months to buy tickets whereas mys only had a week to find tickets since aespa were a surprise. i’m tired of y’all using those clips from the person standing more than a kilometre away from the stage. many people cheered for them even thought they only had a week to come to support them.

don't compare their stage set because Blackpink had a full set as SUBHEADLINERS so they can set up the stage how they wanted to, plus they performed for almost 2 hrs. meanwhile Aespa was a guest for 15 mins while the main performer was preparing. So you cannot expect aespa to have a live band and stage design like bp because they can't do that coz they were just a guest and will only perform for 15 mins.

Honestly the stage wasn’t as dead as people said as someone who was there the crowd was actually very energetic and loud, the atmosphere was really good

Not only was aespa new but they bring a new music concept. I think it was a complete success. You forgot to mention that aespa sold out a show for there last comeback in LA. So in reality it was a huge stepping stone. They’re the first kpop group to do successful promo in NA at the start of their careers.

I'm a BP fan, but what I'm going to say is They've (AP) done their best. But a big music festival like this It's not just the artist who has to be ready. But the team behind the scenes is also important. *So this is my personal opinion. 1. SM doesn't adjust the music to be attractive for live performances. 2. There was no change in the choreography for such a high stage. causing most of the viewers to not be able to see their dance moves as they should. 3. The performance on stage is nothing spectacular. Various styles and effects Not prepared to look attractive (Which I don't know whether to blame SM or 88 without preparation here)

I see a lot of people blaming Mys or even SM, yall need to chill out. First of all, SM never mentioned BLACKPINK nor bought a spot for aespa at Coachella. They were invited to be part of the lineup of 88rising, which brought a lot of asians artists to Coachella and aespa was just one of the various artist who attended. Now, yeah, SM said aespa was the first Kpop gg to be invited to the main stage, which is true and like, idk why many people make it seem like they lied or something; and let´s make this clear: aespa was invited, yes, but by 88rising. Did they were the first Kpop gg to perform at the main stage?, yes. Does that mean they were comparing them to blackpink?, no. I won't deny there do were toxic mys who started bashing bp, bc toxic fans will always exist no matter what, and just like that, there were toxic blinks bashing aespa just because SM posted their group was going to be on the main stage. The fan war was stupid af tbh, from blinks started comparing the stages capacity (some of them were saying the Sahara stage was more important than the main stage or saying Sahara stage was bigger and admitted bigger crowds lmao) to bashing aespa just bc their names weren't on Coachella's official lineup list unlike blackpink. I think SM decided to accept 88rising invitation as a marketing strategy, even tho aespa´s popularity didn't skyrocket after Coachella they did gain more fans and let's remember Coachella was their US stage debut, also, that was months before they had a comeback. Now, the girls were clearly nervous, I don't blame them for that, they literally had 0 experience performing in front of large audiences and they did their best. Now talking about the BP vs AESPA at Coachella narrative: remember BP already had 2 worldwide hits like D4 and kill this love and were already charting under hot 100, while aespa were a rookie who was going to have their first full live performance in front of a large audience, the girls themselves said it was hard for them to debut during pandemic bc the only audience they had was their staff. So, I agree aespa was simply not ready, apart from that, their concept and songs might not be everyone's taste. Not to mention they tend not to do facial expressions bc of their AI concept and stuff (I mention this bc they received a lot of hate for that and antis started saying they had 0 stage presence), Blackpink girls were more expressive (you would expect that from a 3-years-old gg who already had experience). So, the Coachella strategy kinda worked for SM, yeah, let's admit that, they made Kpop Stans and one of the biggest fandoms in Kpop to look forward to aespa's performance, but they simply didn't prepare the girls properly for that, they should have told them to forget about looking like robots and start to at least smile while performing. Even tho facial expressions don't contribute to stage presence, they do help to look more eye-catching. It's not aespa's fault tho, they did what they could and honestly their performance was not as terrible as many ppl make it to be.

As usual. Int kpop stans hating on aespa for no real reason. They deserve nothing but love and support.

cos Blackpink's music is for everyone, that's why they get excellent reception from ordinary citizens to big names such as celeb and politicians.

Personally, I think they got a different and great experience from this. Sometimes you experience some things even if you're not prepared for that, it's an important experience. And they sang really well in all those songs. I believe that, all the hate is unnecessary, like, yeah if you compare it to BP or 2NE1, it's not fair, but it wasn't that bad like some ppl say. They were energetic, they sang live, and the crowd was actually enjoying it. I think it was good for a rookie group. Plus, they officially proved that they can sing live.

Why always compare with the best ? This can easily lead to false impressions of failing. Without doubt BP has the best kpop gg live performances in the west. And they had a full concert, Aespa just a few songs.

Let's face FACTS and ADMIT IT!!!! No KPOP female groups can ever much BlackPink western influence. They were package that way the moment they debuted for international and western audience. All their songs are mainly and mostly for international and western fans and audience. AESPA was hyped and misled for something grand, but in reality merely a 15 minutes sideshow. They were there because of an invitation from a music company working with Coachella. BlackPink, on the other hand, was invited personally by the president of Coachella by going to their concert in South Korea in 2018. BlackPink Coachella 2023 outperformed their Coachella 2019. Simply stunning as ever. No KPOP girl group of the 3rd and 4th generation will ever outperform BlackPink Coachella 2019 and 2023 performance. They have to start by matching the international recognition that BlackPink has before other KPOP girl group can be legitimately be compared to BlackPink.

aespa debuted in the year corona even when they first went to a music event for promotion they were not attended by fans because it was indeed in the year corona, then aespa first went to cochella with a large audience but aespa still did very well it's amazing. I think aespa is really cool, considering now that aespa is the fastest foreign artist in history to do a concert at the tokyo dome, it proves that they have grown so big now, and I'm very proud.

I didn't even know Coachella exists until recently, but from what I understood, it's always a few big names, but it's also full of less known artists, right?? It's not JUST the Beyoncés and the Arianas. There's always a bunch of non-mainstream artists in the line-up. Even foreign artists performing wasn't a new thing. Epik High performed even before Blackpink did and no one questions wether they "deserved it". I don't care how SM marketed it, there was no reason for Blinks to act like they did over a festival. They targeted a rookie group the same way people targeted Jennie at one point, calling them out for "lacking stage presence" and over analyzing their performances, which probably only makes idols MORE insecure. Blinks have been doing it since debut, ever since it was announced that the new SM group will have 4 members, they've been called "the copy of Blackpink" the same way Blackpink used to be called "the copy of 2NE1". The thing is , when they went to coachella it was one of the first time they were performing live cuz they started performing on stages with no crowds due to COVID , and a music festival is a next level live performance, energy and connection with the crowd matters the most , also their popularity in the American market was extremely low it still is on the lower side , they’re not ready yet and this is not an insult maybe they will be ready in a year or two who knows

I think they did great just no promotion as for being ready…if your group who debuted during covid and all you had for experience was stage perforate online concerts to go on…for that the killed and when will they ever be ready. You take the stage head on. Keep in mind black pinks band has a contract with yg so they go with them for live concert performances. BP was on tour when they performed for Coachella…though they change arrangements or intros and choreography for Coachella but it’s mostly songs from their concert set’s already

Honestly i think they were not ready at that time they never handled so much crowd before and the ones they did they danced on backtrack so I don't blame them for not being able to match with the tempo of the environment. They never experienced such crowd before and honestly their agency could've done better work with Lighting and visualization. Other than that their voices were a little unstable but they still slayed their high notes and dances and their high notes gave me goosebumps at that time. But overall they played safe they didn't take risk so it was an okay stage. They were good.

They were not ready, by a long mile. They were only guests of 88rising but sm hyped it like they were headliners, reason for the hate, especially when they flopped onstage. Maybe they can do better IF they are invited as guests again, but I doubt they will be, since BP already own coachella.

Need more team work, not just the girls but their stage production teams too so it can boosting more hype, more confident and at ease on stage.

Honestly no live band plays a big part, you can tell the ambience is more charismatic with Blackpink than Aespa

Second of all: SM promote aespa there and yk what.. their plan worked, aespa are so popular now and millions of people wait for their comeback in May

The problem start when SM claims they're gonna be the next blackpink it create a lot of unnecessary expectation to the group & to the artist itself specially that BP did good on their first coachella stage. There Company always promote them that way so now they known as that not as AESPA. They're not ready for big stage knowing that they never experience big crowd & concert yet that's why their stage presence is nowhere to be found due to the fact that they lack experience on big crowd. the lack of back up dancer & the whole ass video background , I watch their performance and their back ground doesn't go with their choreography if you compare it the BP stage lights and background that also create hype to their simple steps. They stick to much to the choreography and because of that they stick to much in the center , it would be great if they spread a little bit because its a big stage to be stick in to the center.

Blackpink dominated the world and simply not everyone can get where they are no matter how long or how hard they try. What Blackpink achieved is really special, and it's just not only their music and performances, but their charisma and uniqueness. Fans love them just so much, as individuals and as group. But the biggest factor is locals support, they broke the kpop bubble and turned into a global phenomenon.

Not a fan of either although I like both groups' songs in general. I clicked this as I was looking for Blackpink's 2023 Coachella (has it happened yet?) and surprised at the title, I actually thought Aespa did well last year and it worked for me. Given they had to dance while singing live, the performance was excellent. Several of my friends (who're aware of kpop) agreed.

Tbh I think SM made connections through 88 rising to get Aespa on Coachella , sadly the girls weren’t ready so it turned out the opposite of their expectations , remember how SM tried to pushed SuperM to the same par as BTS ? I think it became worst when SM tried to media play and made it look like Coachella invited Aespa when the reality was they’re just guest of a guest , you know the whole main stage thing and tried to shade other Girl group. If SM didn’t media play bout it and let Aespa performed without pressure they would do great and wouldn’t get backlash from comparison

I know this is out of context but I hope someone responds to this.. I read something about a person who says "why are you so into kpop? You don't even understand their songs yet you're so obsessed with them" what do you guys think of this?? I'm a kpop fan (multi stan actually) and I don't have anything against about my fellow kpop fans, I just don't get the point why some people want them to sing in their language in order for them to understand or appreciate the groups Correct me if I'm wrong, they formed a kpop group to "showcase their KOREAN music". if non kpop fans are saying "they should make english version of their korean songs so I could understand their song" then I think something's wrong with them cuz not all the times they're going to make english versions in order for them to understand, yes they do have english lyrics songs but they will always keep on making songs in their language because it's who they are, it's how they were known for right?.. so do you guys base your appreciation only in lyrics just because you don't understand them? We appreciate them not only the lyrics itself but also the meaning, emotion, context of the mv, music, melody, rhythm, etc. Most groups are famous even though they sing korean language. I really need honest comment on this from you guys.

Let's just see it as a American showcase event for aespa, they were there to promote

IMO, they didn't fail as much as underwhelm, which is tragic for the opportunity they had been given. I think the 4 members of AESPA are very talented and have a strong song set. However, SME let AESPA down, treating Coachella as just another performance: No live band, plain background visuals, no special stage features like strong backup dancer performances behind AESPA. Also, AESPA's stage presence and choreography didn't wow the live audience, proving they needed more live performance experience in the West before strutting the stage at a major festival like Coachella. Remember, Blackpink had a world tour before Coachella. Also, Blackpink had rappers Lisa and Jennie with great stage presence and a strong western following, with 3 fluent English speakers/performers. AESPA just doesn't have any standout members that bring their own popularity in the West to support the group in a live performance.

Nowdays kpop companies are hungry for western validation...I mean bts and bp took 5 y Years to achive this..but nowdays compinnes want success for their new 4 th groups in their first year only

It's "K-pop stans" that thought it didn't go well, not "people thought it didn't go well" It's not fair to compare them, at the time a rookie group, to Blackpink who aren't rookies and was revealed as performers wayyyy earlier so fans were ready to buy their ticket in advance and plan their stay. Aespa was revealed to come in place of CL after weekend 1 super late notice. You have to plan everything, you cant just go to Coachella like you're going to the movies, especially if you don't live in California. Coachella is a music festival first and foremost, where both big artists & small artists come, and people are able to be open and exposed to different types of music. To say they didn't deserve to come or weren't ready because they aren't big just because it's K-pop? 88rising brought a lot Asian artists that do not have a huge Western following of all backgrounds for a great opportunity that Asian artists do not usually get, Milli a 19 year old rapper from Thailand, Utada Hikaru, Niki from Indonesia, CL as a soloist apart from 2NE1, but even J-pop groups like Perfume and Kyary Pamyu Pamyu were invited as performers, nothing but positivity there. The whole dead audience has always a Coachella buzzword, even Harry Styles fans at home felt the audience was dead, where as a non-listener of his music I thought was fine, but apparently was considered dead on twitter

It cannot be completely blamed on the members like have you seen their choreo is was so difficult to execute and I think instead of focusing on completely executing the choreo the girls should have focused on hyping up the crowd

i think aespa and SM should wait for their fanbase to grow, and also in my opinion (no hate or whatever) SM is targeting as aespa as the 2nd girl group to perform at coachella, despite the lack of support from the western fans when they perform, they still served and slayed because they work hard for it and they don't deserve that they hate they are humans too..

I like Aespa's songs but they simply lack stage presence. It's not about training, you either have stage presence or you don't.

aespa is not ready for this big music festival in America. Their music are not popular among the American. They were instructed to perform them by their company. Do not hate on the girls, cause they are just the product of a company. The management of SM is suck and want them to become next Blackpink. I feel so glad that Lee Soo Man quited SM. I hope aespa and NCT will be better without the instructions from Lee Soo Man.

I'm watching blackpink coachella now and it's weird cause with some fancams it seems like there's very little energy from the crowd while others you can hear it. I think it was the same with aespa. Acoustics. But aespa isn't blackpink tho.

I seriously think that it is SM 's fault because they over hyped like they were headliners but they were just guests BUT- i am a aespa stan too and blackpink's too Aespa is a really good group but they needed time . Coachella is very big stage because it can either give you a lot of fame and popularity or a lot of hate and disgrace comments. Blackpink owns Coachella though no one can ever beat them but i was really looking forward when aespa was going to perform but the thing is they dont have popularity in the west they could have waited promoted themselves more in the west and then come to coachella See i know they were just invited but still you should have the power to change that 15 mins into unforgettable performance and thats what blackpink has INDIRECTLY it says "STAGE PRESENCE " AND EFFORTS FROM THE TEAM/ COMPANY Coachella always got blackpink so there was a difference not just that a huge different NO HATE TO AESPA !! They want Aespa viral blackpink .. Honestly they are actually not ready yet for the world stage ... It's a pity because Aespa has talents but sadly they have no Stage presence. The music is okay , vocal , beauty is all there .. but their Stage presence in a group is dull compared to when we see in mv.

The problem with aespa is sm pushed them there without experience they haven't even had one single live vocals performance before that they don't have hits either also their choreo sucks for a live audience they need camera work to look good and most of the members don't have charisma whatsoever except ningning a little bit SME announcement with "the first to perform at the main stage" also is a bit shady like nobody gaf about the stages if you won't headline + any inkigayo performance is better than that nothing special no remixes no visuals nothing ( mys go ahead and attack me )
