In this video, we explore the unexpected trend of African Americans leaving Ghana after the Year of Return and Beyond the Return initiatives. These programs, launched by the Ghanaian government and the Adinkra Group in the USA, invited African Americans to reconnect with their roots. While many embraced this opportunity, some have chosen to return to the U.S. We delve into the reasons behind this decision, from cultural adjustments to economic factors and bureaucratic challenges. This video was inspired by content I saw on Steve Courage's RU-vid channel, which highlighted similar themes.
Join us as we uncover personal stories, reflect on the broader implications of this trend, and discuss how we can challenge negative stereotypes about Nigerians and other Africans. Let's hate the behaviour, not the people, and recognize that crime knows no nationality.

Hello, thanks for bridging this topic. I am an AA woman who has been researching the continent of Africa for 7 years now and it blows my mind that AA's would go there looking for work or expecting the same conveniences that are available in the west. Though I can see how some could know about conditions there but could not handle the reality of being there. Especially combined with the culture shock. I've heard some concerning stories about how the AA's are received by the native Africans and some are leaving for that reason. And of course, sometimes it's just poor preparation as you stated. It breaks my heart to see people abandoning ship because we (the diaspora and the Africans) need each other like never before and the rebuilding can only happen if we unite. We each have different talents and skills, if we put them together, like every other nation of people and stop seeing ourselves as different from each other we could definitely build strong nations across the continent. There is no good reason to come back here to the States. Well Africa was not corrupted in one day and it's going to take more than a day to build. Looks like we all need to pray about it and let God. We're no good on our own.

Thanks for the insightful video. I think most Africans in the diaspora should do some rhorough research before venturing out of their comfort zones. At this stage of our development, you should never plan to come to Africa to look for jobs. You should rather be focusing on creating jobs and wealth. In doing so however, you need to dot all your your I(s) and cross your T(s) so that you are not taken for a ride.

This reminds me of the book of Exodus when the children of Israel complained about not having all the conveniences they had in Egypt. And they wished to go back into bondage. The moral of the story is making the exodus from the slave master requires bravery, grit and the delaying of gratification. Until you get to the promised land. Something African Americans and other Diasporans don’t have in them. The western machine gave us too many options and as a symptom of the capitalism and consumerism they can’t strengthen themselves to live in humbler circumstances.

A good conversation starter why it's hard for people to adjust to new environment as raw as Africa. You did well in congealing the complex social-cultural and economic factors hindering the integration and settlement of our kind from Capitalist and Marxist ideologies, thus paving the way for Communist Chinese citizens to embrace the challenges and opportunities that Africa offers. Fortune always favors the brave!

You see its always easy to draw people when things look great etc. When push comes to shove many leave whether its business or pleasure seekers. A few have genuine reasons. Job creation from this perspective has to be entrepreneurial or self mmade dreams

I'm afraid your reasons are vague. 1. When Ghanaians settle in America, they try as hard as they possibly can to set up shops and import African foods of their choice to service the migrants, or adapt to whatever there is there. 2. Choices: you expect a population of 32 million, with only a fraction of that living in the urban areas to have a wide range of international cuisines and restaurants. Why can't the Americans set up restaurants to cater for themselves, for that's what Africans do when they go there. 3. Pavements: they should've then their research well. In Africa the money for constructing the pavement is the 10% that goes to the politicians and their cronies pockets. 4. When you go to Rome, do what the Romans do. Unfortunately there are just as more African in America and elsewhere who wish they were back in Africa, yet they manage to stay on for many reasons. The Americans must have reasons for coming to Africa, as simple as that.

Here is the truth. I feel sad for my black brothers and sisters who are trying to return to the motherland. If is very difficult because the terrain in which they grew up in America is totally different in Ghana. So it can be a challenge when you come to Ghana thinking about similarities for survival purposes. You have to be adaptive which many cant do. I live in USA but was raised in Jamaica which is so similar so for example when I visited Kenya last year I felt in many ways I was in Jamaica. Better yet I was raised in rural Jamaica which became an advantage for Africa. Yes I grew up in the country where it was so basic to the point we never had street light, electricity, had to use wells etc. I feel so sorry for my black sisters because they are returning to the USA where the oppression continues. Lets not look down on them. I love Africa and is coming to live. Thank you Marcus Garvey,

The majority government of the time, the NPP, from its founding fathers unto this day never gave a damn about Ghana but is riches. The sold Ghana to mostly USA’s African American elites, got the cheap publicity the NPP needed even while they made taxation and the acquisition of wealth impossible for Ghanaians or the visiting Americans who live by laws and hold the US government to account to voters

They are not leaving, most of them have bought lands and are back to the US to raise funds to complete their buildings. Most of them are doing online jobs in Ghana. Don't base your facts on few people who are undecided. Thousands of them are doing virtual online jobs in Ghana. Most of them now owe real estates in Ghana. Do better and educative contents.

Sure, some people are leaving. But, how do you know if they are not coming back or not? Some, are leaving to go back to work and make money and then go back at a future time to build in Ghana. Some , are making money in America or other places and building businesses and homes in Ghana. That is there business model. You can't assume the reason from watching a few RU-vid video from some unsuccessful or discouraged diasporas and then generalize it to every diaspora. There are some African Americans who have been living in Ghana for decades. So the "unexpected reality" that you mention is not really reality because your assumption is not scientific. Unless you are taking surveys at the airport or something, you can not say for sure if why African Americans are leaving or if they are planning on coming back.
