The one who defeated the colonialists, the one who started the pan-Africanism movement, the strong hero, the patriot, the patriot, the black heart, and the strong people, Ethiopia.📗📒📕 💚💛❤️ 🥰🥰🥰🥰
You have every right to be proud that's astonishing that it was the only African nation not to be colonized and no wonder the others recognise that achievement. I knew how it defeated Italy but had no idea that it managed to keep all the others out.
@@chrisparnham Ethiopia is the cornerstone of the Rastafarian movement, to the extent that they made the former Emperor, Haile Selassie, their god. I think Selassie was bemused by this notion and certainly did not believe himself to be a 'god'.
@@figo007tv Ghana was not even a country during the days of slavery so how can Ghana be slave sellers? Which group of people in this world never sold their war victims into slavery? The focus should be on those who created the demand in the first place.
I'm Ugandan, our flag was designed by Grace Ibingira, he was a politician...each of the colour bands hold meaning in relation to the country and the crested crane is like a national bird, heard to see flying around in Kampala but can be found in rural areas and in game parks. And yes, it's very hard to see a Ugandan flag flying around casually anywhere in Kampala, it is the opposite in Kenya. See, the thing is that patriotism was killed in Uganda by our turbulent history and the current autocratic regime.
Its crazy how you dont have your flag flying at every government building. Over here in Zambia its law to have the Zambian flag at every Goverment Building/school.
Ethiopia is the only uncolonized country in Africa and this's why other African nations copied our flag! Ethiopia did a lot to end colonization in Africa, Nelson Mandela took a military lesson here in Ethiopia to end the Apartheid. we also established the Africa Union to unite African nations and many many more.... this's why the head quarter of African Union is in Ethiopia(Addis Ababa) because we did a lot of things to unite Africans!...
We should not be misled by some wrong claims about our flags but the reality is that African flags were designed wisely with important meanings ;For example Black =our dark skin, Yellow=Sunshine/brightness, Red=Blood/brother ,Green=Green vegetation surrounding/nature, Blue= abundant water bodies/rain, White= Peace/light/bright future etc. So flags are not just copied without reason.
We are Africans as well as Ethiopians , Egyptians , Moroccans, South Africans etc but it's a fact that we can not exclude foreign assistance from our independence, even our brothers Ethiopians under emperor Haile Selassie experienced Italian colonial rule for over five years which prompted the emperor to request for military support from the USA which he was granted and that's what helped him to fight back the colonial rule and restore his throne. They never fought alone without foreign assistance from the super powers.
I am Ethiopian yes our flag is our history 'our ..united Africans identity .... Ethiopia were Christian before Europeans... ethiopias were muslim even before turkey Qatar Egypt & suddan . There are a lot of amazing thing about ethiopia that i am so proud of yes but one thing that i assure you is ethiopia is a home for any one who come to love & to be loved by someone ..ethiopia is the one & we chose to be love than a pride or power thats the true meaning of being an Ethiopian 🇪🇹 አልሀምዱሊላህ ሀገሬ እወድሻለሁ ❤
I agree. That is our unique character of being Ethiopian different but one in all. Bless you. We will get out of our current miserable situation soon. Let all keep our unity as one nation and fight the dividers. Have a good day, my fellow Ethiopian.
The ever independent minded neighbors of ours - the Somalis, ended up with a very unique flag. As an Ethiopian, I respect that. I also love Kenya's flag. I think it has the coolest colors and design of all the African flags.
8:08 Nigerian here. And a member of the ethnic group that would've formed the "short-lived state of Biafra". It'd be really cool if you could make a video on the story of Biafra and Nigeria's civil war. Love your content btw. Cheers
@Oliseah Bruh abeg pack your face. We are tired of all these divisive talks. The West have done enough damage merging us up in the first place. But regardless of how much we try to regroup within recreation of little pocket entities, there's always still gonna exist a marginalised group with any newly created nation state. The damage is done. We move. Let's continue to uphold the garbage they've dumped upon us and turn it up by making it work.
You’re obsessed with this Biafra war. Don’t you already have enough information on it. Enough already. Focus on how to advance the common good and stop fantasizing about yesteryears.
A Nigerian already made a video about Biafra and Ojukwu. The channel is called “New Africa” I believe. Am a Yoruba man and even I support the idea of Biafra! But I want us to a united Nigeria! But we must first get rid of corrupt politicians and the rising Islamic hooliganism and terrorism funded by the Saudi Arabian and other middle eastern governments!
Nkrumah borrowed it from Ethiopia but all the other countries that got independence after Ghana and adopted the flag did so in solidarity with Nkrumah. Senegal, Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso etc. all believed in Nkrumah's dream of a united a Africa at least in the initial stages
🇹🇩 Chad, Ivory Coast🇨🇮, Romania and Ireland. The old DRCongo was changed because it resembled so much to the 🇪🇺 EU flag. 🇧🇼 Botswana flag is unique. 🇿🇦 South African is just beautiful. Africans have a bright future. May God help you people there. From an Australian 🇦🇺 friend.
Being Ugandan, I had never thought of the Ugandan flag as particularly interesting until today when I found out that it's quite unique! But you won't find the flag hanging out on people's houses like folks do in the USA because here we are not proud of the country, you will most definitely find them at schools and government institutions
Hanging a flag outside one’s house is not the only way people express pride for their country . It’s just not a Ugandan thing to have flags hanging on our verandas. PS. I am Ugandan and extremely proud to be one. 🇺🇬❤
@@jerome6246 What happened to people having one in their vehicles? Looks like you have to wait for a soccer event. But I used to one in every house I lived in out side of Uganda.
🇿🇦 Even though the South African flag uses all the colors from these flags, the inspiration for them is different, and I think it's the first flag to use 6 colors as their primary colors, it has that Y shape I've never seen in other flags, the design is just so clean and my favorite African flag by far.
The AU is recently doing a good job of liberalizing the African economy, promoting democracy and loosening borders for freer movement of peoples And Proud to be an Ethiopian 🇪🇹
Yes, it's over. A peace treaty has been signed already between the Tigray region in the north and the government of Ethiopia under the supervision of African Union. There is hope for a brighter future in this continent. Rich in young, healthy and booming population, and a vast amount of natural resources.
Great video, man!! When I was a teenager I had a map of Africa with all the African flags, and I noticed the colors of the Pan-African Movement on many of them....
The quickest way to have found the Ugandan flag was to stop a biker or boda boda rider and ask them where you could purchase a flag, ask a local rather than drive around (unless you were doing that for dramatic effect for the videos entertainment benefit) Overall, it was an informative video.
@@erynn9968 The whole clip of searching for a flag is actually quite amusing. I never knew that there is a place where finding a flag is so difficult. They have to make their point that a flag can't be seen anywhere so they have to drive around and show that viewers that there are indeed no flags anywhere.
They are Westerners being themselves. Thinking they are superior and that in their own countries the flags would be hanging over every window or balcony which is not true.
Ugandan here. So we were taught in school that the colours stand for: Black(our colour as Africans), Yellow(the abundant sunshine- fact coming from Uganda straddling the equator) Red(blood/brotherhood). Second those weren't/aren't the colours of the UPC. Third, you'll find flags mostly outside government buildings/offices and police stations.
In most African countries, flags are found on government buildings as you have mentioned. In my country Zambia 🇿🇲 you will find them at schools, hospitals, and any government building. In the US flags are all over the place, even on houses.
Cool flags: Jamaica 🇯🇲 Kenya 🇰🇪 South Africa 🇿🇦 South Sudan 🇸🇸 . They are also some of the biggest players in pushing forward for equality, justice and upward mobility for (wrongly) downtrodden people to rise again. It will be great to see South Sudan take its rightfully place as pioneers of mathematics, architecture and spirituality. God bless these nations.
The reason is that Ethiopia defeated Italy. Because it is the pride of Africa, many African countries have made their flags like Ethiopia green, yellow and red
Ethiopia was the only African country represented the nation with its flag and they been helping freedom fighters around Africa, for example Zimbabwean added the Ethiopian flag on their flag after mengistu helping arming Zimbabwe freedom fighters
This is a beautiful video, thank you. I do flag subject episodes too but yours is something to aspire to, this is so well made, informative, perfect graphics and brilliant on location shots. Keep up the inspiring work.
It also shows that Nigeria isn't big on pan Africanism. It's shown by your president stance against Niger coup to remove France and the fact that there were no condemnations from your people. No protest, nothing.
They all got the inspiration from Ghana 🇬🇭⭐ my homeland.. Whereby the RED -stands for the toil, and blood our ancestors or forefathers shed and fought for our independence.. YELLOW 💛-Stands for the rich mineral natural resources the continent/country posses such as Gold, diamond, bauxite, timber, platinum, etc GREEN 💚-Stands for the rich and fertile vegetative landscapes which boosts for the production of crops , animal rearing/farming, and unique weather conditions as well as natural tourisms and currency.. THE STAR ⭐- It stands for hope and a brighter future.... OPTIONAL BLACK -stands for unique skin color some particular people posses... The designer of the Ghanaian 🇬🇭 flag is called Mrs Theodosia Okoh, in 1957 and died in 2015 at age 95
Ghana that gain independence 60yrs ago, Ghana is a British formation just like many African countries, do you know how long the Ethiopia nation has been existing.. Ghana copied from Ethiopia, even the name Ghana doesn't have anything to do with Ghana territory of today ,it's also copied from the Ghana empire in Mauritania Mali.. your Ghana was called gold coast ,it's a British formation
ethiopia already had the color descriptions before both Ghana and marcus garvey. idk why the video forgot to mention that. • Green: "represents the richness and the fertility of our land as well as hope " • Yellow: "represents religious freedom and peace." • Red: "represents the sacrifice of our fathers, who spilled their blood in defense of Ethiopia "
I just want to make a slight precision, Ethiopa didn't defeat the European powers, it defeated Italy, which to be honest is pretty much a guarantee when they don't have allies.
Ghana 🇬🇭 was the first sub saharan country to gain her independence, in describing the meaning of the colours ( red for blood 🩸 of their forefathers who fought for their independence, yellow for mineral resources, Green for the rich vegetation , Black representing the people and the star meaning Ghana 🇬🇭 is the gateway to Africa. Many African countries who gained their independence after Ghana 🇬🇭 decided to adopt these same colors and sometimes the star ⭐️ with similar or close meaning
The 'Black Star' means black excellence. This name was passed on to Ghana's national team the 'Black Stars' and even Ghana's shipping line 'The Black Star Line'. Nkrumah put in a lot of resources to ensure anyone representing Ghana shined like a star. The fact is it was Nkrumah of Ghana who actually put Pan-Africanism into practice. When Ghana gained independence, he said: 'The independence of Ghana is meaningless until it is linked with the total liberation of Africa'. Unsurprisingly, he is the only African head of state to have his statute blazon the head quarters of the OAU.
Ethiopia not Ghana! Ethiopia is the only uncolonized country in Africa and this's why other African nations copied our flag! including Ghana!! Ethiopia did a lot to end colonization in Africa, Nelson Mandela took a military lesson here in Ethiopia to end the Apartheid. we also established the Africa Union to unite African nations and many many more.... this's why the head quarter of African Union is in Ethiopia(Addis Ababa) because we did a lot of things to unite Africans!
@@LezaHDPlus But Ethiopia was a reactionary country. It was Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana who initiated continental African unity - not Haile Selassie of Ethiopia. It is the same reason why in Addis Ababa, you find only the statute of Kwame Nkrumah on the compounds of the AU. Nkrumah was voted the most influential African leader of the 20th century.
@@LezaHDPlus I'm glad Kenya and Malawi adopted Marcus Garvey's flag which represents 'negro people' instead of that ugly flag y'all try to gloat over 😆 Keep that stupid pan africanism in your addis ababa
The stripes and colors as you know are the influence that Ethiopia had on the independence movement of the former colonies, Ethiopia is the oldest country in the world and the only one on the African continent that was not colonized, they put the Italians to run with bees and wasps and lions trained to attack whites, politicians and the African people were very proud of Ethiopia at the time, that's why they inspired their flag in Ethiopia.
Watching your videos I feel relaxed. Like you're not trying to push an overly harmful political agenda, you're honestly interested in history and sharing it with us. Thank you. This was a good video. Proud of Ethiopia.
@@ThePresentPast_ Panafricanism wasnt mostly developed in the US. It was also developed in the UK where all the Pan African conferences were held between 1900 and 1945 and in Africa. Before Garvey, there was Edward Blyden from the then Danish Carribean who coined the term Africa for Africans and the perspn to pioneer the Return to Africa movement was Chief Sam from the then Gold Coast. You You need to reas about RS Makonnen, Edward Blyden, etc
Colours existed before Haile Selassie. It's from Ghana and not from Ethiopia. Fact. You 🤡 can look at the flag of Bolivia and believe it's from Ethiopia if you want
Yes in Angola the red is the spilled blood the yellow represents the resources we have, and the black its for the people we lost in the war against the oppressor.
Marcus Garvey flag was inspired from the original Haitian flag as first black free nation which is red and black. Marcus Garvey add the green to express the land of africa vis- a vis to nature. For the Haitian heros red represented the blood of our ancestors and black represented the black people from africa.
Ethiopians used to be proud to defend their country. Now they are proud to bring their family, from grandchild to grandma, to Italy or Germany. And in Ethiopia there is a birth rate competition between christians and muslims. Muslims there are said to be in the majority since the 60´s (source: the autobiography of Malcolm X). Ethiopia´s population is now at plus 120 million and counting. Good luck!
As an American, I’m shocked that they taught you flags in school. I know almost all the world flags now but I taught myself through online quizzes and RU-vid videos.
LOVED this episode! Heb ook elke reclame tot het eind bekeken xD hopelijk helpt dat een beetje? Haha normally I never have commercials but now that I have to use VPN I see what others normally see while watching YT lol Anyway, about the video
The reason why you couldn’t find the flag was because you were searching in the wrong places you should have tried schools though at the End you were at a place with one (Kampala Serena Hotel) and also opposite Serena, it’s the Parliament. There you would definitely find one too. We don’t just put it everywhere.
But that's the thing. In most countries, you would find a flag in some open, public space or at least on some shop rather than inside a school or government office. Plus, he can't film in those places you mentioned.
@@lunayen But if you are literally starving/living hand to mouth, would hanging a flag be top priority? In fact why would you hang the flag of a govt that doesn't benefit you?
The order of color in Ethiopian flag is not RED-YELLOW -GREEN. Rather GREEN -YELLOW -RED. For it has its own indications. Every color has a meaning. AM ETHIOPIAN.
A proud Ugandan here. We don’t display our flag because we hate our govt. People aren’t patriotic enough we’ve suffered a lot coz of the people in power
I would also like to know why the majority of European (and former colonies' by extension) flags feature red white and blue. Was it just some sort of fashion or what?
slavics for Russia and Panslavism. dates back to 1698 Many others by the french revolution. white for the kingdom of france, blue is the color of the Bourbon House, and red for the revolutionaries. Red and White are often related with St. George cross, like England and Denmark. Scandinavians just followed the danish trend.
If may add to your excellent work. The origin of Abyssinia red, yellow n green( 🇬🇭 ) comes from rainbow 🌈 . the red yellow n green are the brightest in the rainbow that is I was taught growing up.
2:30 one of the main reasons besides geography that what's now Ethiopia didn't fall under colonial rule was that the portoguese tought them to make guns to fend off an invasion by the ottomans
The Portuguese saved us... led by he famous explore brother Christopher dagama... they fought shoulder to shoulder with us ..destroying the Muslim invaders who invaded almost 90% of Ethiopia.. . There is still a bridge in Ethiopia named after the famous explorer. God Bless the Portuguese
I know why most Africans have similar flags but your story telling is so interesting and your search for UGANDANIAN FLAG is so so funny 😂 UGANDANIAN you guys owe him an explanations 😊 ... can I say something about the map you showed in the video b/c I love history my self and I m from ETH. ... so In the African map Ethiopia is named Abyssinia (I guess its a map b/f colonization)- It has nothing wrong but its just to add on that because some may think its the Ancient name of Ethiopia but not;since the bible time Ethiopia is Ethiopia and one of the few countries stayed to its orginal name till this modern day with a very unique meaning which God's true name in it (in one of the 3 syllable) Ethiopia was Ethiopia since before Mosses... I know you know this but people think its Ethiopia ' s former ancient name but its just a another name given by European if i m not mistaken by British.... Just like Arabs called us HABESHA another beautiful name which we cherish 😊. Please make a video on Ghana my favorite favorite country in Africa as you mentioned first to be free from colonization and a country I called " the brain of Africa " . TNX loved ur video
😂😂the flags are typically easy to find towards independence and football matches. Otherwise he needed help from a local to go to the deep corners of downtown to get him one
Ethiopia was huge during the biblical times. It covered the area from east to west of the middle of sub-Saharan Africa. So Nigeria and Ghana were part of Ethiopia in biblical times. Even the sea off the coast of Ghana was called Ethiopian Sea. This is the proof that Ethiopia extended up to the west of Africa. The current Ethiopia was indeed called Abyssinia in biblical times.
Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 is the last country in Africa to gain independence from a European country, the design of the flag used the pan African colors as well. The bird in the white triangle was used in the Rhodesian flags, emblems and still used in the modern state as a symbol of the nation. All the colors mean the same as all other flags. The white however stands for peace and the minority races.
Do you know the South Sudanese flag was based on the Kenyan flag because Kenya was instrumental in peace agreement?.Infact the pact was signed in Kenya between Sudan and South Sudan. In addition, Kenya set up a fulltime Ambassador to oversea the peace process of our South Sudanese brothers, he was called Gen Lazurus Sumbeiywo. Ask any South Sudanese which is their favourite neighbour and they will tell you its Kenya. Upto this day, South Sudanese still study in Kenya, some have taken Kenyan citizenship and can use the South Sudanese number plates on Kenyan roads.
If you wanna see a flag in any country, go to school, government buildings, or even American embassy etc. You can't just drive down the road hoping to see flags. Even in the states, in most neighborhood you probably find like one flag.
Actually Jamaicans started the Pan-Africanism via Marcus Garvey. Marcus Garvey is from Jamaica. He is Jamaican. Pan Africanism did not start in USA. It originated in Jamaica. Garvey was inspired from his upbringing in Jamaica from his father and discrimination he faced from the parents of his childhood best friend who was a little white British girl. Moreover when he went to Panama, Honduras and Costa Rica to work he say the plight of the black people from those countries enduring remarkable hardship as he say the plight of the Black Americans in the US when he went on a visit. Thus Pan Africanism was born. As a historian, don't you think you should at least get the origin of the person you reference correct? It matters here because it was a combination of those experiences that began to shape his world view and where he say black people fit in to it. I am Jamaican and my uncle knew Marcus Garvey. My uncle , father and I are all Garvyites. In fact many if not most Jamaicans are and it has had a HUGE influence on the roots reggae culture. 🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
It has always been in the European interest to split up Africans into small states. And we Africans have always understood that we are really one people. As a Ugandan, I see very little that sets us apart from the people of Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania, South Sudan, and a large part of DRC. We all speak Kiswahili, and even our local languages are mutually intelligible. And although, the Bantu languages of Southern and Eastern Africa are a little further apart, there is a level of mutual intelligibility that reaffirms that we are one people, one nation, ultimately. That day is coming.
In the latter days of British rule, the British tried to set up a federation of Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika. But the locals wouldn’t have it. I don’t think Britain or other colonial countries wanted to split Africa into small units. Indeed, Nigeria is made from many distinct tribal and religious groups, and one group in particular fought for their independence and lost.
@@CartoType The resistance to the British attempt to unify their East African colonies in the 1920s and 1950s wasn't because the locals were against unity per se, but because they distrusted the motives of the British. The Buganda kingdom in particular feared that the EA unity project would enable the European settlers in Kenya to dominate the whole of East Africa. It was colonialism their were against, not EA unity.
I feel as if pan-Africanism is an inherently flawed concept. It's like rallying behind pan-Asianism--absolutely ridiculous. Different ethnicities, languages, customs, traditions, values, religions, whose prerogative is it to, in faraway America, decide that continent of origin alone is enough to unite everyone? Even saying black people alone own Africa is ridiculous, because people in Morocco are Africans but could hardly be called 'black'.
I don't know what you wanted to achieve with this video, but you ended up talking about Uganda more than even telling us why the Flags in Africa looks mostly. Next time do a video on why Europeans flags also look the same. Almost all European flags have the colours,; "Red, Blue, and White" in them; including the USA which is not an European country. Take the French flag; flip it into landscape mode (kind of) and you would get the Netherlands flag. Take that same Netherlands flag and put a simple creast in it and guess what? You would get the Croatian flags. That's how similar European flags are too. So it's not just with African flags looking the same, but It's with all flags in general.
