Hi there. My name is Jochem. I make the show The Present Past, a show where I research how the present has been influenced by the past. History but connected to the present and fun!

Every episode I show how history has influenced and made a thing, an idea or event in our present time. Let me know if you have a topic you'd like to share!

Even though I actually have been educated as a historian and do my research, I can and will make mistakes. So don't take the word of a youtube historian as the absolute end-all truth. You probably shouldn't do that with any (internet) person.

The video is interesting but it's not just filled with ads and advertisements that you say yourself but also is monotonous and you never get to the point I feel like I'm walking around on a tour of Italy from a travel agency more than I'm watching something about skyscrapers or Towers

I don't know but I think the building Towers back in the year 12 whatever is dangerous because there is no steel structure and if there's a smaller quick or Tremor your casualties are going to be up the roof I also noticed the windows on the towers and they kind of big which means maybe perhaps the towers weren't that big after all or that tall.

"2 million raped German women" is one of the false anti-Soviet propaganda myths based on false data from one of the Berlin hospitals, when German women claimed that they were raped by a Red Army soldier to get permission for an abortion. Otherwise, abortions were banned because Hitler needed new soldiers. In reality, the Soviet leadership immediately upon entering Germany, under penalty of death, prohibited harm to German civilians. However, due to the barbaric crimes of the Germans in the USSR, the thirst for revenge of the Soviet soldiers was high and rapes still happened, as well as executions on the spot of the guilty Soviet soldiers. However, these cases were no greater than those of the Allies. However, the Americans hid these facts and only a few African Americans were punished for rape. Read the book "A Woman in Berlin". She, one of their entire apartment building, was raped by some Soviet quartermasters and paid her with food. She was afraid to leave the house because she thought that all the Soviet soldiers would rape her. But when she finally decided to do it, she discovered that the exhausted Soviet infantry were simply resting on the sidelines and were not interested in her at all. So a handful of Soviet quartermasters simply could not physically rape 2 million German women, especially considering the likelihood of execution.

This video gets a LOT of things wrong. First off, the Dutch are proud of our colonial days because we also had our Golden Age at that time. It has nothing to do with slavery nor racism. The first slave trade voyage was in 1655, while the Dutch Golden age started decades earlier in 1588 and lasted until 1672. The only reason that most Dutch citizens don't feel the need to apologize, is soly because we don't feel like we are the ones that should be giving them. This is whats wrong and what is going wrong every single time. Media creates two sides to an argument that is false in the first place. Dutch people can be proud of their Golden Age, colonial expeditions and trade, all the while feeling sorry for the attroceties that happened at the end of it and after.

Italy despite the fact Western Roman Empire fell and Barbarians looted and destroyed all Italy and Italians (in fact Italy lost more than 2/3 of their entire population)... Italians have this neverending ability to rise again.... to reborn and rise from the ashes... so many times in History... and still coming back more beatiful, bright and passionate as in the ancient time happened.... Truly remarkable people... highest number of Unesco sites in the world are there... Romans blood truly left somithing in that peninsula... Even after ww2... Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Gucci, Prada, Dolce e Gabbana, Armani, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Olivetti ecc ecc... Low interests for profit, highest attention to quality and passion.

Any decent Structural Engineer could tell you how high it is even POSSIBLE to build a brick tower! Like wood, brick, stone, steel ... EVERY construction material has limits on the weight it can support! For example, one (of MANY, MANY!) reasons we know Noah Ark did not exist is that it is IMPOSSIBLE to build a wooden ship over a certain length!

It shouldn't really be a suprise that Italian food is not really "authentic". Most food isn't. Food used to be what people had available at a certain season. It was sustenance and not a lifestyle. It was far more basic then we can imagine.

Most of the world have used slavery going back thousands of years which includes Europeans. There is an irony in South Africa as blacks still live in poverty, especially Zulus despite the end of apartheid, now a few elite blacks oppress them instead of the Dutch settlers. Every city has shack communities with 55% in poverty & 25% in food poverty. Nelson Mandela must be turning in his grave as it is one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Modern slavery still exists globally, again it is a paradox that India - the country that still complains about British colonialism who first banned it in the19th C, it returned after independence - accounted for for 20% with 8 million slaves in 2016. Records show that Indian slavery goes back to 3 BCE but was mainly occupied by different countries from the 7th century..

As an American born in 1981, I remember it all being a big deal in 1989 and then the fall of the USSR, but I had no context. In 1997, I went on a three-week trip across Europe and stayed in Berlin for a few days. Even then, Berlin seemed so different than it does today. Remnants of the wall still stood in some places, mostly museum/monuments I imagine, but I remember a sense of unease by the guards of the place and the fact there still were people watching over it says something. A lot of unresolved feelings.

Amazing how insidious leftist doctirne can be found in this video. "Tomatoes came from Americas, coffee form eithopia... So Italian food is like not real man" Sounds like the same nonsense that human race is a social construct and that men and women are exactly the same, interchangeable in fact. Nonsense. "Food nationalism is used to exclude people" Things must have things they are not. Exclusion is necessary for existence in fact.

Maybe you should spend more runtime explaining history and less making snarky bad faith remarks. Did anyone ask the native Christians of North Africa and the Levant if they liked being colonized by Muslim fundamentalists in the 7th and 8th centuries? The Crusades were in a lot of ways a reconquest, not an imperialist war.

I loved both videos (from you as well as from Johnny Harris). both were pretty informative. Story telling style of johnny is interesting and your critical analysis is also excellent. I always try to watch such content with open mind to see what history different people have read and what kind of mindset/opinion they have about different historical events. I don't trust everything i listen. I just see it as a unique view point which opens my mind to a complex history. I also agree with your analysis behind columbus motives and the fact that he remained convinced or at least try to convince spanish govt that he found India (possibility: he might be trying to cover his failure by lying till his death). He was 100% an evil being (in my opinion). Renaissance started with strong religious stakes in EU empires. Empires started to get wealth of knowledge in this process and people started following science. this started the golden age of EU. but before that time, EU was not in a good shape (no matter how you put it). When science progressed, church saw it's influence being lost and started opposition to it. Which led to a western mindset that religion and science are opposite to each other. I agree that Spanish govt may have taken advantage of political discord in the american continent but it's technological superiority and colonial practices also helped it a lot over to capture native americans. Ethnic cleansing was also done to ensure strong rule and it was justified with dehumanization of affected population. It is the Same dehumanization that we saw in EU against Jew/muslims during renaissance, during colonial times, during 20th century of world wars. Same dehumanization we observe about Palestinians. Cause all genocide seems fine at the time if you dehumanize them. you reduce identity of palestine to a resistance group Hamas, then prove Hamas as terrorists without showing any proof and then openly doing hundred folds more killing, rapes and much more than what you accuse Hamas of doing. We see this in videos, in non-western media and UN reports (proof if ongoing genocide) but people says it's fine cause the victims are terrorists.
